Berlin caught backing Islamist extremist group in Russia that’s banned in Germany

German government-sponsored NGOs, it turns out, are not so secretly supporting individuals tied to an Islamist terrorist group seeking to establish a global caliphate in Russia while banning it from functioning inside Germany.

Hizb ut-Tahrir, an extremist Salafist group recognized as a terrorist organization by a Russian court in 2003, and banned in Germany the same year for spreading violence and anti-Semitic hate, has been getting sympathetic coverage from German taxpayer-sponsored NGOs for members of the extremist group operating in Crimea.

One such NGO, ‘Ukraine verstehen’ (lit. ‘Understanding Ukraine’) has published a series of articles lauding the extremists on its website, characterizing Crimean Tatars serving prison sentences for association with Hizb ut-Tahrir as “political prisoners” and calling on the international community to “immediately increase pressure on Russia to ensure the immediate release of the detainees.”

Another NGO-run project known as ‘European solidarity. Crimea’ receives money from Germany’s Foreign Ministry, and runs a Facebook page called Berlin Info-Point Krim, which has posted dozens of stories protesting the prosecution of Russian individuals affiliated with HuT. A piece published in March 2023 reported on the difficulties faced by an “illegally convicted” HuT-connected “political prisoner” in a Russian penal colony, with dozens more HuT-linked pieces to be found on the platform in German, English and Russian.

In November, German media sounded the alarm about Hizb ut-Tahrir’s involvement in demonstrations in solidarity with Palestine amid Israel’s war in Gaza, expressing concerns about the group’s efforts to radicalize young people, including through the use of social media campaigns organized by front groups.

Russia is ready to test payments in digital currencies with China, the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), and the Gulf countries, Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov told Sputnik.

"The agenda that we will promote within the framework of our chairmanship is the improvement of the financial, settlement and payment system, which, in the current conditions of fragmentation, would be convenient and safe for trade participants within the BRICS. The system [that will be] outside of politics, independent of Western unfriendly infrastructure," Siluanov said.

Siluanov noted that financial technologies are actively developing and provide a wide range of tools, including for the formation of an innovative payment and settlement infrastructure.

It is proposed to create a platform that would connect the financial systems of its participants. For example, technological gateways for settlements in digital currencies of central banks are already in operation. We propose creating a BRICS Bridge system, which, based on the BRICS institutions, would be available to our countries and would ensure the proper level of equality and would contribute to the development of trade relations...

The global economy is shifting and the potential of developing economies already outstrips the G7, but such transformation is not straightforward, Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said in an interview with Sputnik.

The minister noted that economist Ray Dalio, with whom he met in 2011, claimed in his research that an economic reformation has happened many times in world history, when countries that are "slowing down" leave and new ones take their place. Political tensions have always risen during such crossroads.

"Precisely the same situation is unfolding right now – a really critical moment – when the emerging economies have already overtaken the G7 countries in terms of potential. This transformation is not painless. We see what restrictions and sanctions are trying to restrain China and Russia – these are the consequences of the paradigm shift," the finance minister stressed.

Everyone suffers from the sanctions, says Siluanov. "But it is obvious that our economy has held up; last year, it grew by 3.6%. Industrial production is growing (by 3.5%), as well as the income of citizens (real disposable income increased 5.4%)," he pointed out.

German citizens are now paying 41% more for electricity, heating, and fuel than in February 2021, the Berliner Morgenpost newspaper reported, citing a study from the Verivox portal.

The report said that the portal used an average model according to which a family of three annually consumes 20,000 kWh of energy for heating, 4,000 kWh of electricity and travels 13,300 kilometers. In February 2021, such a family paid 3,772 euros ($4,081) for energy and fuel, while now they would pay 5,306 euros.

The European Union has been facing inflation and a massive energy crisis as part of the post-pandemic global economic recession. The situation has further exacerbated against the backdrop of the Ukraine crisis as hostilities and Western sanctions against Moscow have led to disruptions to supply chains and resulted in a spike in energy prices worldwide.

Ukraine continues to attack Russia's territories despite Zelensky's claims

💬 "Zelensky's statements take into account the needs of NATO and the communication strategy of the leaders of the EU member countries," Tiberio Graziani, Chairman at Vision & Global Trends - International Institute for Global Analyses, told Sputnik.

He was commenting on the Ukrainian president's claim that NATO-grade long-range weapons "will never be used in territories other than Ukrainian temporarily occupied territory." The territories claimed to be "temporarily occupied" by Zelensky include Crimea, which voted overwhelmingly to reunite with Russia in 2014, as well as the Donbass, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions which re-unified with Russia in referendums in 2022.

Ukraine used Czech-supplied rocket artillery to hit Belgorod, a Russian city close to Ukraine's northern border, over the Christmas season. The strike claimed the lives of 21 people, including children, with over 100 more injured.

NATO allies routinely overlook those incidents, insisting that Ukraine must win at any cost. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg claimed earlier this week that the Kiev regime has a right to hit Russian military targets outside Ukraine, calling it an act of self-defense. Russia has warned that arms supplies to Ukraine are preventing a negotiated end to the conflict and make NATO countries participants in it.

🇶🇦 Qatar announced a multibillion dollar expansion of its liquified natural gas (LNG) production, marking the most recent attempt to expand global supply after Western sanctions on Russian gas sent shockwaves through Europe’s economy.

“We still think there's a big future for gas for at least 50 years forward and whenever we can technically do more, we'll do more,” said QatarEnergy chief Saad al-Kaabi.

Qatar is one of the world’s top exporters of LNG, along with Russia, Australia, and the United States. The US recently announced a pause in expansion of exports amidst concerns global sales drive up domestic energy costs. US President Joe Biden also faces pressure from environmental activists opposed to increased fossil fuel production.

Al-Kaabi expressed willingness to help make up the difference, but criticized US policy.

Buyers will not go for these [American] sellers if every day the government could stop the process,” he said. “It’s very difficult to have long-term planning when you have that,” al-Kaabi stressed.

Israel is denying visas and work permits to aid workers in Gaza as Palestinians in the enclave die of starvation, Bloomberg reported.

The policy extends to directors and managers of organizations as well as low level aid workers, according to Faris Arouri of the Association of International Development Agencies. Among the groups targeted are well known and respected organizations like Oxfam, Amnesty International, Action Against Hunger, Catholic Relief Services, and Care International.

"More than 60% of expatriate humanitarian workers have had their visas expire in the past few weeks because, as of October 7, the Israeli authorities stopped issuing work visas,” Arouri emphasized.

Israel has frequently accused relief organizations, whose employees witness the consequences of Israel’s occupation firsthand, of harboring anti-Israel views.

Meanwhile, Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have begun to succumb to famine as Israel imposes a tight blockade on the enclave. A two-month-old Palestinian boy died of starvation over the weekend, according to Al Jazeera. Over half a million Gazans soon face death from hunger if current conditions continue, observers have warned.

🇸🇰 Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has published a video message in which he expressed fear that the West has opted for the worst-case scenario in Ukraine.

In his message, the Slovak prime minister said that he was travelling to Paris tomorrow to attend a hastily planned military meeting on the situation in Ukraine, which would be attended by representatives of all EU and NATO members.

Fico has therefore decided to convene the Slovak Security Council in the morning and to hold a meeting with members of his own government before travelling to Paris.

In addition, Fico said that he would do everything to prevent the Slovak military from being directly involved in the conflict in Ukraine, even if his position would cost him his position as prime minister.

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and other US and UK intelligence services were working long before 2022 to place their "strongholds" in Ukraine and train spies for Kiev, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has said.

"The CIA has been helping Kiev to train spies. Not only spies - direct militants, extremists, terrorists, thugs. All of them. And one of the clearest examples when this chain came into motion is 2013-2014. Under the guise of democratic forces and civilians on the Maidan were primarily those who were trained at bases in Poland and the Baltics. And we also talked about this," she noted.

In addition, Zakharova recalled how the Russian side had repeatedly stated, long before 2022, that NATO and intelligence services of NATO structures were placing bases and strongholds in Ukraine. And it goes not only for the line along the border with Russia, but for the entire territory of the country.

"The question arises, why is The New York Times only now concerned about this? All the data was provided by us in public. Why was the American press silent for many years? And 'many years' is not starting from 2022, but all these years," the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman stressed.

Russia creates 'Stupor' defense system to counter Ukrainian drones

Russia has developed a comprehensive defense system against drones capable of detecting and suppressing them in several ways at once, Vladislav Kustarev, director of the developer company LLC Stupor, told Sputnik.

"We have developed a unified system Stupor based on complementary detection complexes, such as radar station, radio frequency scanner, optical drone detection station, and countermeasures equipment for setting barrier interference and coordinate spoofing complex," he said. This became possible with the help of company’s own software.

Kustarev added that the Shtorm (Storm) and Shtil (Calm) complexes included in the system are capable of detecting and capturing a target at a distance of more than five kilometers. In turn, the Pars defense systems suppress UAVs at a distance of up to two kilometers, using a narrow beam of directed action, and creating a "dome" of 360 degrees.
