Another foreign mercenary commander bites the dust in Ukraine
A commander of the Norman Brigade mercenary unit was reportedly killed in battle in Ukraine, according to various sources. Telegram channel TrackANaziMerc identified call sign Hrulf on March 12 as being Jean-Francois Ratelle who was born on January 12, 1986, in Quebec, Canada.
Ratelle was a Canadian military veteran and MMA fighter who became a commander of the Norman Brigade in spring 2022 after having served for Kiev since 2017. According to Hrulf's colleagues, the mercenary brigade unit was returning from a mission to its secure location but was followed by a Russian reconnaissance drone and later attacked.
Ratelle was supposedly killed along with two other foreign soldiers of fortune, while another was wounded. In April 2022, the National Post cited Hrulf as saying that coming under fire from Russian forces was a "living hell." The mercenary commander revealed that the Norman Brigade is composed of Canadians, Americans, Brits and Europeans who had experience fighting insurgents in such places as Afghanistan.
Since February 24, 2022, the total number of foreign mercenaries who arrived in Ukraine has totaled 13,387. The Russian Ministry of Defense has confirmed the liquidation of 5,962 hirelings as of March 14.
