Media outlet Consortium News published a memo from the group Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity this week warning of the consequences of French President Emmanuel Macron’s proposal to send French troops to Ukraine.

“This would be introducing combat troops of a NATO country into a theater of war, making them ‘lawful targets’ under the Law of War,” read the memo. “The American people need to understand that Europe is leading them to the cusp of nuclear annihilation.”

Crises in Palestine, Haiti rooted in legacy of Western colonialism

Major crises in Haiti and the Gaza Strip have shocked the world in recent months.

“The Zionist genocide of the Palestinian people and the political and socio-economic crisis in Haiti both have their origins in their respective episodes of destructive foreign intervention in the first decades of the last century,” reads a recent article by Palestinian activist Robert Fantina. Fantina joined Sputnik’s The Critical Hour program to discuss his article, ennoscriptd “Genocide, Coup d’Etat and Militarization: Palestine and Haiti.”

“This article… does make a very clear connection between the colonial histories of both countries, with Haiti having been invaded and really colonized by the French, and, of course, Palestine being colonized by Israel with the support of the United States,” said Fantina. “We should also mention that it was the United States also who occupied Haiti for over 15 years, 20 years… the result of both is the suffering of the people.”

The US has taken part in almost 400 military interventions in its short history, with half of them taking place since 1950 and a quarter occurring after the end of the Cold War. Fantina criticized the legacy of such foreign interference, claiming, “The United States government will talk about how it supports freedom and democracy around the world, but that's only if the democratic process leads to a government that is pleasing to the United States.”

Scenes of starvation have emerged from Gaza recently as Israel strictly limits the amount of food and aid allowed to enter the besieged enclave. US President Joe Biden, who often boasts of “restoring the soul of the nation,” is apparently insufficiently bothered by the mass casualty event to restrict supplies of weapons to the US ally.

"A detachment of Pacific Fleet warships, including the Varyag missile cruiser and Marshal Shaposhnikov frigate, has crossed the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait and entered the Red Sea," authorities stated.

‘Let's not let Nazism raise its head in Europe!’ Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said, condemning selective compensation for victims of Nazi brutality

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said in an interview with the magazine Der Spiegel that she plans to change the citizenship test to include questions about the Holocaust, Judaism, and the history of Israel. Faeser noted that the Holocaust gives Germany a special responsibility to protect Jews and the state of Israel, which has now become part of German identity.

Zakharova criticized the limits of such an approach. She emphasized the need to take into account the suffering of all nationalities affected by Nazi crimes and called for rejecting the adoption of policies that exclude any groups from consideration.

The OSCE Berlin Declaration and international legal documents emphasize the importance of recognizing the suffering of all victims of Nazism, Zakharova said. Berlin has no moral right to treat victims of the Third Reich's crimes differently, the spokeswoman noted.

"Paying compensation to victims of Nazi brutalities of only one nationality and bearing historical responsibility to citizens of only one state is a repetition of crimes and mistakes of 80 years ago," Maria Zakharova said.

Since the start of Russia's special military operation in Ukraine in 2022, the departure of international corporations from Russia has resulted in them experiencing over $107 billion in losses, according to Reuters.

This figure represents a significant one-third increase over the previous assessment made in August of last year, indicating the substantial impact on both the financial landscape and the sudden absence of Western expertise in Russia's economy.

Approximately 1,000 companies have withdrawn their operations from Russia, although several hundred, such as French retailer Auchan and Benetton, continue to operate or have merely suspended their activities, as per research conducted by the Yale School of Management.

‘Hypocritical’ US continental shelf claims risk sparking ‘conflicts' in Arctic

It is “very hypocritical” of the US to demand adherence to international law while not following other international regulations when it suits them, Mikael Valtersson, former air defense officer in the Swedish Armed Forces, told Sputnik. This is especially true “when the matter concerns a practical enlargement of US territory,” he added.

“The US often talk about the rules-based order or international law, but avoid signing international agreements to keep their options open; and not being bound by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) they, therefore, consider themselves not obligated to abide by decisions from the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS),” Valtersson said.

Russia sent a demarche to Washington on March 25 after the US unilaterally secured rights to the seafloor beyond 200 nautical miles from the coast in the Arctic, Atlantic (East Coast), Bering Sea, Pacific (West Coast), Mariana Islands, and two areas in the Gulf of Mexico last year.

"The US behavior will make relations worse as Russia reacts to US hypocrisy. This might also strengthen Russia diplomatically, as it can show obvious double standards in US behavior and demands in international relations,” Valtersson warned.

He was echoed by Hong Nong, an expert in international law and maritime settlements, who said that by bypassing the CLCS, the US "undermines the established international process, thereby raising doubts about the credibility and acceptability of its extended continental shelf limits.”

Japan readies for military building spree to house fighters and destroyers

The Japanese government has disclosed plans to upgrade 5 airports and 11 ports for military use, according to The Japan Times newspaper. Half of these facilities are located in southwestern Japan, facing Mainland China and Taiwan. Construction is slated to begin next April if the funding is finalized soon.

The ungraded infrastructure will accommodate fighter jets and transport aircraft, as well as destroyers and cruisers, and play host to military exercises. One of the airports is located in Okinawa, which hosts 75% of US military facilities in the whole of Japan, including 30,000 active duty personnel and 32 military bases.

This building spree come amid Japan’s increasing militarization. Some of Tokyo’s recent moves include doubling its defense expenditures to 2% of its GDP, procuring counterstrike missiles capable of striking targets 600 miles away, and formulating plans to station troops in Pacific Island nations for the first times

The infrastructural upgrades also signal Japan’s strategy of stationing heavier weaponry and facilitating rapid troop deployment in coordination with the US, with an eye to containing China.

As we delve deeper into the motive behind this branch of ISIS*, Sputnik has put together essential facts and clues linking the US to these notorious jihadists.

◾️'Wilayat Khorasan'* is considered to be an affiliate of ISIS operating in Afghanistan. Its most recent major terrorist attacks have targeted Afghanistan, Iran, and Russia. They view the Taliban**, Iran, Russia, China, and the US as their main enemies. However, with the last country on the list, things are not so simple.

◾️In June 2020, Shahab al-Muhajir (known as Sanaullah Ghafari) became ISIS-K’s* leader.
