🇷🇺 Top-5 Russian air defense systems: cracking NATO’s best missiles like nuts

Sunday is Air Defense Forces Day, the professional holiday of Russia’s ground-based air defense troops. Integrated into a single automated and layered network, they are armed with an array of modern weapons, including:

🔸 The Tor – a series of short-range, mobile, tracked missile systems whose missiles have an operational range of up to 16 km, and which can detect up to 48 targets and track ten simultaneously.

🔸 The Pantsir – a mobile, self-propelled combined short-to-medium-range surface-to-air missile and anti-aircraft artillery system which can attack targets at a range of up to 20 km, and detect them up to 75 km away.

🔸 The Buk – another series of self-propelled, tracked medium-range SAM systems with the ability to detect enemy aircraft at a range of up to 140 km, and to engage them up to 42 km away (and missiles at ranges up to 20 km). The Buk’s capabilities against NATO equipment were proved in Syria in 2018, when the system destroyed more than 85 percent of all US Tomahawk cruise missiles launched into the country.

🔸 The S-300 – a series of long-range surface to air missile systems first rolled out in the late 1970s, but upgraded regularly and widely considered to be among the most effective air defense systems in the world today. The S-300 can be equipped with missiles with a range of up to 400 km, and can simultaneously engage up to 24 aircraft of 16 ballistic or maneuvering missile targets. A modification of the system known as the S-350 Vityaz, introduced in 2019, provides medium-range defense coverage up to 120 km against aircraft, or 30 km against missiles.

🔸 The S-400 and S-500 – comprehensive upgrades to the S-300 series of long-range air defense systems, with a maximum target range of up to 400 and 600 km, respectively, and, in the case of the S-500 – the ability to target satellites in space.

"Netanyahu cancelled a retaliatory strike against Iran after talks with Biden": Following discussions with the White House leader, the Israeli Prime Minister rejected the proposal of his war cabinet.

"The US president persuaded the Israeli PM against an immediate retaliatory strike on Iran after it launched approximately 300 drones and missiles the previous night. According to reports, several members of the Israeli military cabinet advocated for a retaliatory attack, but due to the lack of significant damage and Netanyahu's discussion with Biden, the attack was called off."

🇷🇺 Russia’s best in the world air defenses forged in WWII, Cold War and special military operation

💬 “Since February 24, 2022, air defense systems in the special military operation zone have been carrying out the specific task of repelling attacks from aerospace weaponry. Our air defense systems have had the privilege of destroying and repelling modern means of aerospace attack, including everything in the arsenal of NATO countries,” former CIS Integrated Air Defense System deputy commander Aytech Bizhev said, speaking to Sputnik on the occasion of Air Defense Forces Day.

“Air defense crews have successfully mastered the destruction of HIMARS, ATACMS, and other high-precision weaponry that the West once propagated as being immune to Russian air defense systems,” Bizhev said.

Russia’s air defense capabilities are rooted in the immense historical experience amassed in the defense of Moscow and Leningrad during WWII, and the strategic knowledge gained during the Cold War.

“The USSR provided assistance to fraternal countries, including military and technical assistance to Arab countries. Our air systems were purchased by these countries – half the world acquired our air defense systems. We took part in conflicts in Vietnam and the Middle East, which provided our air defense crews and commanders enormous experience. Equipment was tested in the hot and humid climates of the Middle East, Vietnam, Korea and so on. Our air defense school is unlike that of any other country in the world. Western countries, including the US, never paid such close attention to air defenses. Why? Because they are situated on a separate continent beyond the seas and oceans,” Bizhev said.

Accordingly, even with the advent of anti-ICBM defenses, the US never attained a Russian-style capability of echeloned air defenses, radar coverage, etc. “No country has the resources we do in this area,” Bizhev concluded.

An air defense-capable Israeli warship intercepted a suspicious airborne target that flew into the nation's airspace from the Red Sea, the Israel defense forces said.

"A short while ago, IAF and Israeli Naval forces identified a suspicious aerial target that crossed from the Red Sea into Israeli airspace. An Israeli Navy missile ship successfully intercepted the target using the ‘C-Dome’ Defense System," the IDF said.

The target did not pose a threat, the military added. No sirens were sounded and no injuries or damage were reported.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said he called his Russian and UAE counterparts, Sergey Lavrov and Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan to discuss the Iranian attack on Israel.

"I told both of my colleagues that Hungary hoped there was still a chance to avoid an escalation of the situation. But this will only be possible if all global stakeholders behave responsibly, going forward," he said.

Szijjarto added that the phone conversations confirmed that the two countries were also interested in preventing the conflict from spreading across the Middle East.

❗️ Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzia slammed the UN Security Council for failing to act on the Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate in Syria as he urged an end to bloodshed in the Middle East during an emergency UNSC meeting.

"It is regrettable that unlike the meeting today, you did not propose to bring it to brief the Council on the 2nd of April," he said, adding that Russia called an emergency briefing to discuss the Israeli strike against the consular premises in Damascus.

Nebenzia criticized Israel for not complying with the UN Security Council resolutions, which he said was "an obvious disrespect shown to the Council, to all of you who are here in the members seats, and a complete disregard to the decisions made by the Security Council."

"This high level confrontation and bloodshed must be stopped. We think it's urgent for the entire international community to undertake all the efforts necessary to de-escalate the situation," Nebenzia said.

‘Just a slap in the face’: Iran’s retaliatory strike against Israel merely a preview of its full capabilities

“For Iran this was a very small attack. This was just a slap in the face,” Dr. Mohammad Marandi, a political analyst and professor at Tehran University, told Sputnik, commenting on the Islamic Republic’s massive missile and drone barrage against military targets in Israel Saturday night, which came nearly two weeks after an Israeli airstrike hit Iran’s Embassy compound in Damascus, killing seven senior IRGC officers.

“Iran’s drone and missile capabilities are very advanced, and the Iranians only used a handful of their advanced missiles. The rest were decoys that forced Israelis to use up $1.3 billion worth of anti-missile missiles. So, the Israelis know that if they’ll continue this, then the Iranians will hit them much harder,” Marandi said.

Dr. Faod Izadi, an associate professor in the department of American studies at Tehran University, noted that Iran had the legal right and what amounts to strategic responsibility to mount Saturday night’s missile and drone campaign.

“Iran attacked Israel because of Israel’s attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus. Consulates under international law, under the Vienna Convention are part of that country’s territory, its soil. And under Article 51 of the UN Charter, if a country is attacked, that country can respond, defend itself,” Izadi said.

💬 “Iranian leaders realize that if they don’t have a serious response, these types of attacks will continue and increase. And that’s why they responded. So, it shows Iran’s capacity. And it shows the fact that Iran is willing to use this capacity,” Dr. Izadi emphasized.

❗️ Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzia slammed the UN Security Council for failing to act on the Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate in Syria as he urged an end to bloodshed in the Middle East during an emergency UNSC…
❗️ Iran's attack on Israel did not happen in a vacuum – it was a response to the shameful inaction of the UN Security Council, Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzia said during an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.

"What happened on the night of April 14 did not happen 'in a vacuum.' Iran's steps were a response to the shameful inaction of the United Nations Security Council [and] a response to Israel's blatant attack on Damascus... by no means the first. Syria is constantly being bombed by Israel," Nebenzia said.

On April 3, the US and UK refused to discuss Russia's proposed draft UN Security Council statement on the Israeli strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus. London and Washington then cited the fact that there was no unity in the meeting's assessment of what happened. On Sunday, an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council is taking place in connection with the retaliatory strike that Iran carried out on the territory of Israel. Meanwhile, shortly before that, Iran's mission to the UN said that if the Security Council had condemned the Israeli strike on the Iranian consulate and brought the perpetrators to justice, the need for Iran to punish the Israeli side "could have been eliminated."

Russia calls for restraint on all sides involved in the incident with Iran's attack on Israel, Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzia said at a UN Security Council meeting.

Russia calls on Israel to follow the example of Iran, which has said it does not want further escalation, the Russian ambassador highlighted.

"We note Tehran's signal of unwillingness to further escalate hostilities with Israel. We urge West Jerusalem to follow its example and abandon the practice of provocative forceful actions in the Middle East, fraught with extremely dangerous risks and consequences on the scale of the entire region, already destabilized as a result of the escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli confrontation," Nebenzia emphasized.

Iran has exercised its right to self-defense after the US, France and Britain prevented the UN Security Council from adopting a statement on Israel's strike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Iran's Permanent Representative to the UN Amir Saeed Iravani said at a Security Council meeting.

"The UN has failed in its duty to maintain international peace and security. Russia proposed a press statement to condemn the atrocious act, which was supported by China, Algeria and many members, but it was blocked by the US, Britain and France," Iravani said.

"Faced with such circumstances, the IRI had no choice but to exercise its right to self-defense within the framework of international law," he stressed.

Iran has no intention to engage in conflict with the US, dedicated to de-escalate tensions, avoid expansion of conflict, the Iranian envoy said. But if the US initiates military operation against Iran, Tehran will respond proportionately, Iravani stressed.
