Google fires employees who protested $1.2 billion Israel contract - report

Google has fired 28 employees for participating in a 10-hour strike at the company's offices to protest the company's business relationship with the Israeli government, NYP reported, citing a company-wide memo.

As noted, the protesters demanded that Google cancel the $1.2 billion "Project Nimbus" contract, under which Google Cloud and Amazon Web Services provide cloud computing and artificial intelligence services to the Israeli government and armed forces.

Commenting on the firings, a Google representative said that the protesters' behavior disrupted the work of other employees, which is against company policy.

Earlier in the day, the New York Times reported that Israel had deployed an experimental facial recognition system in the Gaza Strip for mass surveillance of Palestinians.

An Israeli intelligence official told the newspaper that the facial recognition system uses technology from the private Israeli company Corsight and Google Photos.

Ukrainian officials extort millions of euros from major Western investor - media

Arnulf Damerau, an Anglo-German businessman and one of the largest investors in Ukraine, has said that corrupt officials, including those in the Zelensky administration, are extorting tens of millions of euros from him to stop prosecuting his business, the Financial Times reported.

Damerau is co-owner of the major online casino Cosmolot, Ukraine's tenth largest taxpayer. Following an inspection by Ukraine's Economic Security Service, the company was accused of violating gambling laws and evading 560 million euros ($598 million) in taxes.

According to the businessman, a Ukrainian individual met with Damerau in Vienna in December and told him that the charges against Cosmolot would be dropped if Damerau agreed to hand over control of half the company to an offshore trust.

The victim said he shared photos and details of the meeting, as well as the names of those involved, with security services in Europe and the US.

"This is a country which aspires to be part of NATO and the European Union, but what’s happening there right now — by a small minority — gives me déjà vu of the darkest Yanukovych times," he claimed.

What's behind the US decision to impose more sanctions on Iran?

The US imposing additional sanctions on Iran makes no sense because the Islamic Republic is "so sanctioned that more such measures will do almost nothing," Hossein Askari, political analyst and Iranian professor emeritus of international business and international affairs at the GW School of Business, told Sputnik.

"It is more for politicians to show that they are doing something rather than admitting that the isolation of Iran has been a disaster," Askari said, adding that the Iranian authorities have "realized that they live in a world where they have to be militarily strong and independent."

Asked how the new sanctions will affect Iran's relations with Western countries, the expert noted that Iran has "written off the West at least for the next decade."

"They don't trust the West and the gap between Iran and the West cannot grow much more than it is," the analyst said, pointing to "the bias of the US and Europe in defending Israel's crimes against the Palestinians while attacking everything Iran does."

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan announced earlier that the US would impose new sanctions in the coming days on Iran's missile and drone programs, as well as the country's defense ministry and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The sanctions are being imposed in response to Iran's first direct attack on Israel late last week, which saw a wave of over 300 missiles and drones fired from the Islamic Republic, Iraq, Syria and Yemen.

Key statements by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova:

▪️The briefing at the UN Security Council on the attacks on the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant has shown that the collective West continues to create an aureole of permissiveness around Ukraine.

▪️There is no reaction from the West to Ukraine's plans for a possible new attack on the Crimean bridge, they are not interested in it.

▪️The transfer of an aircraft carrier by Paris to NATO command is another clear evidence of the steady "erosion" of French sovereignty.

▪️Ukraine continues to openly announce terrorist attacks on the territory of Russia.

▪️The law signed by Zelensky on tightening mobilization "destroyed the rights of Ukrainians:" It will contribute to the growth of corruption in Ukraine and will only divide society more. Ukrainians, according to the law on mobilization, storm embassies abroad to exchange passports and not return to Ukraine.

American doctors have repeatedly refused to treat the child. A few years ago, Russian doctors from Krasnodar came across a publication about the girl and offered to help, eventually performing several operations.

Now, Fenner is being taken care of by surgeons from St. Petersburg, who promise that after the treatment, her facial scars will remain thin and their number will decrease.

Starting today at eight, the farmers promise to maintain the blockade of the two border crossings - Medyka and Korchow in the Subcarpathian province - for 48 hours, the media report.

The protesters will allow one truck per hour and will not prevent the passage of personal vehicles, as well as vehicles carrying humanitarian and military aid.

In addition to their staunch opposition to the EU's "Green Deal," many Poles are expressing discontent with the surge in agricultural imports from Ukraine, which they see as an additional burden on rural workers across the country.

Peskov further stated that the aid package could potentially escalate hostilities and drive Ukraine into the ground, namely “fighting down to the last Ukrainian”.

Boeing whistleblower warns of deadly risks over plane maker’s safety failures

Hundreds of people could lose their lives if Boeing fails to address quality issues during the assembly of its aircraft, ex-Boeing engineer Sam Salehpour said in a statement appealing to Congress, the Guardian reported.

"I genuinely believe that the safety problems I have observed at Boeing, if not addressed, could result in a catastrophic failure of a commercial airplane that would lead to the loss of hundreds of lives,” Salehpour said.

The engineer, who worked for the plane-maker for more than ten years, identified a problem with cracks between key parts of the skin of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. According to him, this problem concerns more than 1,000 jetliners that are currently being operated by various airlines.

During Boeing hearings at Congress, Salehpour raised the issue of plane safety culture, which he said leaves much to be desired. Boeing workers jump on parts of the aircraft during assembly to connect them, which, according to the engineer, could cause these parts to break down in the future.
