NATO chief Stoltenberg admits delay of US aid to Ukraine had consequences
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg claimed that the new Ukraine aid package did not come too late, although admitting that the delay had left consequences.
Stoltenberg complained that Russia had much more ammunition, while the Ukrainians had been forced to ration theirs. The Ukrainian military has also been struggling to strike down missiles and drones because it lacks ammunition for air defense systems, he added.
The US House of Representatives passed a $61-billion bill on Ukraine-related aid on Saturday. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said he hoped the upper house of Congress would have a vote on it as soon as Tuesday before it is sent to the president's desk.
The package provides $23.3 billion to replenish US weapon stocks and $13.8 billion to procure advanced weapons. It also includes a measure to provide Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) to Ukraine.

🇪🇺 🇷🇺 The West's focus on the military-industrial complex often prioritizes war over peace, says African expert
The idea of pushing war narratives is very central to the West's orientation in terms of a robust system of governance, Professor Emmanuel Remi Aiyede, a political science expert from the University of Ibadan in Nigeria, told Sputnik Africa, commenting on Russia's Sergey Lavrov's recent remarks about NATO's false narratives that Russia is planning to attack Europe.
He contended that the sanctions imposed on Moscow in connection with the conflict in Ukraine have had a boomerang effect, negatively affecting both Russia and Western countries, as well as other countries around the world, including in Africa.

NATO chief claims 'there are no plans' for allied combat presence in Ukraine
NATO has no plans to put boots on the ground in Ukraine despite the fact that several member states have posted uniformed military personnel to Kiev, Jens Stoltenberg said.
Stoltenberg argued that the presence of allied military personnel in Ukraine did not make the alliance or its member states party to the conflict.
The Norwegian also insisted that the military assistance flowing to Ukraine from NATO allies, including the $61 billion in funding passed by the US House of Representatives on Saturday, was no charity.
Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder said that Washington was considering sending more military advisers to the Office of Defense Cooperation at the US Embassy in Kiev. Ryder said that the office performed advisory and non-combat support missions despite being staffed exclusively with Department of Defense personnel.

Freedom Flotilla with aid to Gaza continues to prepare for departure
Organizers of the new Freedom Flotilla with humanitarian shipment for the Gaza Strip continue preparations for its upcoming departure despite reports of talks between Turkiye and Israel to change the route, Turkish humanitarian relief foundation IHH told Sputnik.
On Sunday, Israeli news portal Ynet reported that Israeli and Turkish authorities were allegedly discussing sending the Freedom Flotilla to the Gaza Strip via Egypt to prevent a repeat of the events of 2010, when Israeli commandos intercepted a ship of the flotilla after it tried to breach the Gaza blockade, which resulted in deaths of 10 Turkish nationals.
The flotilla is scheduled to depart after April 24, IHH added.
The foundation previously did not rule out possible problems with the flotilla's attempts to reach Gaza, but added that there would be no security on the ships. Activists from some 60 countries, as well as journalists, will take part in the trip. Israel might stop the activists in international waters and arrest everybody on the boats or it might allow the passage, co-founder of the peace group CODEPINK Medea Benjamin had earlier told Sputnik.
The Gaza Freedom Flotilla Coalition was established in 2010 by the Free Gaza Movement and the Turkish Foundation for Human Rights and Freedoms and Humanitarian Relief (IHH). The coalition aims to support the Palestinian people and deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip by breaking the Israeli blockade of the enclave.

Russia creates digital security system to protect facilities from drones
Russia has created a digital security system dubbed "Pyatnitsa," which means Friday in Russian, designed to protect important large-scale facilities from drone attacks, the developer of this system told Sputnik, adding that the system would be presented at the Army-2024 forum.
The exhibition will be held from August 12-18 in the town of Kubinka near Moscow.
The system will help "cover" large-scale facilities, including industrial enterprises, attacked by Ukrainian drones, he added.
The system was named "Pyatnitsa" because it was invented on Friday, he said, adding that "there are no more hidden meanings here."

We have drawn the best from industry and cybersecurity, merging everything together and thus getting the ability to control disparate devices in large area facilities," the system's developer said.

Hezbollah downs Israeli drone over Southern Lebanon
Lebanese armed group Hezbollah said on Sunday it had shot down an Israeli drone over the country's south.
Hezbollah identified the drone as a Hermes 450, which is a multi-role combat drone produced by Haifa-based Elbit Systems. It is designed for reconnaissance and surveillance missions.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) later confirmed that its drone had been shot down by a surface-to-air missile over Lebanon.
The Israeli military also said that it would continue to operate in Lebanese airspace to "protect the state of Israel."
Israel and Hezbollah have been exchanging airstrikes regularly since October 2023, as the situation in the region deteriorated dramatically after Israel launched military operations in the Gaza Strip following the October 7 attack by Palestinian movement Hamas.

Germany's Scholz thanks Norway for providing gas to country after cutting ties with Russia
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz thanked Norway for providing gas to the country instead of Russia, adding that Oslo became Berlin's largest gas supplier.
Scholz also claimed that the era of fossil fuels is coming to an end, which means changing industrial processes.
Scholz attended the opening ceremony of the Hanover Fair on Sunday. Norwegian PM Jonas Gahr Store also attended the event.
In order to remain Germany's largest gas supplier, Norway is currently developing additional gas deposits, the chancellor said.
Germany, along with several other European countries, decided to reduce its energy dependence on Russia after the start of Moscow's special military operation in Ukraine in February 2022. Halting the flow of Russian gas to Europe led to a spike in energy prices and shortages, forcing countries to look for alternatives, which also included the United States and its liquefied natural gas exports.

US base in Syria struck for the first time for months
At least five rockets were launched from Iraq's town of Zummar towards troops at a coalition base in Rumalyn, Syria on Sunday, Reuters reported citing two Iraqi security sources and a US official.
After the Iraqi attack, an aircraft from the US-led coalition in Iraq and Syria carried out a strike against the launcher, the US official told Reuters.
The attack against US forces is the first since early February. Telegram group affiliated with the Iraqi Kataib Hezbollah movement announced the resumption of strikes against US forces due to the lack of progress with the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq.
The US forces destroyed a small truck with a rocket launcher on the back parked in Zummar. The investigation of the attack jointly with "the coalition forces in Iraq" was launched.
The Iraqi Security Media Cell stated that Iraqi forces began "a wide-ranging search and inspection operation."
Notably, the day before the attack Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani returned from a visit to the US, where he met with Joe Biden at the White House.
