IOC allows Palestinians to compete in Olympics after criticism of double standards

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced it would allow Palestinian athletes to compete in this summer’s Olympic games after months of criticism over the organization’s alleged double standards regarding wars in Gaza and the Donbass.

“We have made the clear commitment that… the National Olympic Committee of Palestine would benefit from invitations, like other national Olympic Committees,” said Bach.

Israel’s devastation of Gaza has led to the destruction of sporting facilities in the enclave as well as the death of high-profile Palestinian athletes. Volleyball star Ibrahim Qusaya and Olympic football coach Hani Al-Masdar have been killed by IDF airstrikes as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is accused of indifference to civilian life. The killings form part of a pattern of what critics allege is Israel’s deliberate targeting of prominent Palestinian intellectual, professional, and cultural figures.

Bach’s announcement signals a concession towards protest over the IOC’s alleged double standards in its treatment of various countries’ Olympic teams. The organization has been heavily criticized for its treatment of Russian athletes after Moscow launched a special military operation in the Donbass region in 2022.

Critics pointed out the Swiss-based organization hasn’t taken such measures against American athletes in the wake of US interventions in the Middle East, which have killed an estimated 4.5 million people.

In recent months European activists have called for Israel to be penalized as the country’s military continues its operation in Gaza, which killed more civilians in one month than have fallen during two years of fighting in the Donbass.

President urges reckoning with Portugal’s history as Europe at crossroads over colonial rule

Portugal’s president claimed the country should take steps to address the legacy of slavery and colonialism during an event with foreign journalists this week.

“We have to pay the costs,” said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, suggesting the country should devote economic resources to address the impact of historical conquests. “Are there actions that were not punished and those responsible were not arrested? Are there goods that were looted and not returned? Let’s see how we can repair this.”

The President’s statement comes as world leaders are increasingly questioning the role of the West in global affairs, which critics say is not limited to historical acts of settler colonialism. The North African countries of Chad and Niger recently expelled US and French troops from their countries as leaders across the continent question Western support for wars in Gaza and Ukraine.

Observers point to such developments as forming a global trend towards a “multipolar” world order.

“We are sure that a new multipolar world order, the contours of which can already be seen, will be more just and democratic,” argued Russian President Vladimir Putin last year. “And there is no doubt that Africa, along with Asia, the Middle East and Latin America, will take its worthy place in it and finally free itself from the bitter legacy of colonialism and neo-colonialism, rejecting its modern practices.”

The United Kingdom may send its military to the Gaza Strip to deliver humanitarian aid, Sky News reported, citing government sources.

The report noted, however, that the government has not yet made a final decision on this issue.

On Saturday, the UK navy said that it had sent an RFA Cardigan Bay ship to support the construction of a "temporary pier to allow delivery of humanitarian aid directly from the sea into Gaza."

On October 7, 2023, Palestinian movement Hamas launched a large-scale rocket attack against Israel and breached the border, attacking both civilian neighborhoods and military bases. Nearly 1,200 people in Israel were killed and some 240 others abducted during the attack. Israel launched retaliatory strikes, ordered a complete blockade of Gaza, and started a ground incursion into the Palestinian enclave with the declared goal of eliminating Hamas fighters and rescuing the hostages. Over 34,300 people have been killed so far by Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip, according to local authorities.

Twelve people were injured as a result of an Israeli airstrike on the town of Sarbin in southern Lebanon, a local military source told Sputnik.

"Israeli warplanes attacked a house in the city of Sarbin in southern Lebanon with guided missiles. As a result of the bombing, ten Lebanese citizens … and two Syrian citizens were injured," the source said.

In turn, Lebanese Shia movement Hezbollah said it had attacked three Israeli military targets near Lebanon's southern border.

Hezbollah has been exchanging airstrikes with Israel since October 2023, as the situation in the region deteriorated dramatically after Israel announced a military operation against Palestinian movement Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The Lebanese Foreign Ministry has said some 100,000 people have been forced to leave their homes in southern Lebanon because of Israel's shelling. Israel has also said that about 80,000 residents of northern Israel have found themselves in a similar situation.

Western media admits chaos on Ukrainian frontlines as Russia easily liberates another village

Russia has liberated large portions of the settlement of Ocheretino located northwest of Avdeyevka in the Donetsk People’s Republic, with a report by New York City-based news website Business Insider suggesting Russian troops were able to enter the village unopposed amid a Ukrainian organizational breakdown.

Russian soldiers liberated most of the rural settlement of Ocheretino amid conflicting reports demonstrating the confusion and dysfunctionality that has increasingly taken hold within the Ukrainian armed forces. According to the report, Mykola Melnyk, the commander of Kiev’s 47th Mechanized Brigade, claimed Russia’s advance occurred because of an error made while rotating Ukrainian troops in the settlement, leaving it unguarded.

If true, the report is indicative of Russia’s strategy in recent months as Moscow is able to slowly grind down Ukrainian forces, taking advantage of errors and the brittleness of enemy lines as Kiev’s under-equipped army approaches collapse. Melnyk claimed his brigade was one month shy of serving for a full year without a rotation, underscoring the strain faced by Ukraine’s understaffed forces.

The breakdown of Kiev’s military was demonstrated in dramatic fashion in February when Ukrainian troops in Avdeyevka suddenly fled their positions en masse under Russian pressure. A complete disintegration of military command occurred as troops spontaneously abandoned their positions, allowing Russia to liberate the key city.

Recent accounts have suggested particularly fractious relations between extremist contingents within Ukraine’s army, many of whom reportedly reject the command of new commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrsky. Recently Ukraine's 67th Mechanized Brigade was broken up by the country’s defense ministry amid disputes between neo-Nazi commanding officers while trying to hold the city of Chasov Yar.

US-made GLSDB munitions useless for Ukraine due to excellence of Russian electronic warfare - report

The Ukrainian military is unable to effectively use GLSDB precision-guided bombs, which the US transferred to Ukraine earlier this year, because of Russian electronic warfare equipment, according to the Polish media outlet Interia, citing a statement by the under secretary of defense of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment William LaPlante.

According to the report, GLSDB bombs can only rely on inertial navigation to calculate the location of the target when the GPS signal is suppressed by electronic warfare. As a result, they miss the target. The reason for the high efficiency of Russian electronic warfare in suppressing the GPS signal against GLSDB is the relatively low flight speed of these projectiles when gliding in the air, according to the article.

GLSDB are special long-range projectiles for US-designed launchers.

Zelensky hides true death toll figures to not scare off new recruits - report

A Ukrainian lawmaker who spoke on condition of anonymity in order to be candid said they believed Volodymyr Zelensky’s announcement in February that 31,000 soldiers had been killed since 2022 vastly downplayed the conflict true toll.

The military death count, which Ukraine has long refused to disclose, likely has to be presented as lower to avoid disrupting an already-struggling recruitment and mobilization drive, the lawmaker said.

On April 11, the Ukrainian parliament adopted a bill on mobilization aimed at replenishing Ukrainian forces. On April 16, Zelensky signed it into law. The document will take effect on May 18.

Ukraine rejected 2022 peace deal over Russian language status & 'banning Nazism' terms - Welt

Russia and Ukraine were closer than ever to concluding a peace treaty in April 2022, but the Kiev regime rejected several of Moscow’s demands, German newspaper Welt Am Sonntag revealed.

Moscow demanded that Russian be made the second official language in Ukraine, that mutual sanctions be lifted, and lawsuits in international courts be stopped. Kiev was also to officially ban “fascism, Nazism and aggressive nationalism,” according to the draft peace treaty between the sides obtained by the newspaper.

It follows from the draft, agreed during negotiations in Turkiye on April 15, 2022, that Moscow and Kiev had reached an agreement on the basic conditions for ending the conflict. According to it, Ukraine:

◾️Committed itself to "permanent neutrality," abandoning aims for membership in any military alliance, including NATO.

◾️ Agreed never to "receive, produce, or acquire nuclear weapons," not to allow foreign weapons and troops on its soil, and not to provide its military infrastructure, including airports and seaports, to any other country.

◾️ Renounced holding military exercises with foreign participation and partaking in any military conflicts.

Article 5 of the draft treaty outlined comprehensive security guarantees that the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – the US, UK, France, China, and Russia – could provide for Ukraine.

Regarding territorial issues, parts of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions of Donbass would remain under Russian control, the Welt-cited draft treaty stated, and Ukraine’s "security guarantees" would not extend to Crimea or the port of Sevastopol. The West sabotaged any possible peace treaty between Russia and Ukraine, it was revealed last year. Senior Ukrainian lawmaker David Arakhamia claimed then UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson convinced Kiev in 2022 not to negotiate with Moscow and carry on fighting. Moscow has emphasized that it never rejected negotiations, but Zelensky himself prohibited such talks through a legislative decree.

If you ignore it, it might go away: Ukrainian official asks West to believe in Kiev's victory amid panic and chaos in Ukraine military

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba urged Ukraine’s Western partners in an interview Saturday to "firmly believe" in the country’s victory.

Kuleba framed Western aid to Ukraine as an investment in global security. This comes as Ukraine is experiencing a shortage of military personnel, due to which the Ukrainian government recently decided to increase its mobilization efforts and adopt a new mobilization law.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Sunday that panic is growing in Ukraine on the fronts, and it is important for Russia not to stop the special military operation and support this trend.

Earlier this month, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that Ukraine had lost almost half a million soldiers since the beginning of the special military operation in 2022.

Russia to replace US in Sahel region - CIA veteran

Russia will likely replace US in African Sahel region, former CIA intelligence officer and US Department of State official Larry Johnson told Sputnik. He clarified that American foreign policy “is being rejected by the local governments,” while Russia has no history of enslaving black Africans or ties to colonial empires.

“Russia doesn't have a history of enslaving black Africans - number one. Russia is not closely tied to the colonial empires: The French, the Brits, the Germans, the Dutch, the Belgians – who have a long history of exploiting Africa and exploiting the people, exploiting the resources. So I think that both Russia and China are viewed as more honest brokers, to be candid. Much more so than the United States,” Larry Johnson stressed.

This is part of the broader “disassembly of the US-led rules-based international order,” the CIA veteran said.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented on the Russian Federation's response to asset seizures:

🔺It's premature to discuss this, but there are Western investments in Russia.

🔺In the event of the confiscation of Russian assets in the West, foreign investors and governments will think twice before investing in these countries, as the level of reliability will decrease.

🔺In case of asset seizure, Russia will defend its interests endlessly, including in court.

🔺The confiscation of Russian assets in the West would be a huge nail in the future coffin of the entire Western economic system.
