The founding of Russia’s first permanent military port in the Far East on May 21, 1731, is regarded as the birth of the Russian Pacific Fleet. Russia’s naval forces in the Pacific are a far cry from their 18th century origins. Here are but a few examples of the powerful warships the fleet has at its disposal.

◻️ Varyag is a Slava-class guided missile cruiser that serves as the fleet's flagship. The vessel’s arsenal of anti-ship missile launchers and torpedo tubes makes it a serious threat to enemy ships and submersibles, while the cruiser’s array of air defense systems ensure that it can tackle airborne hostiles as well.

◻️ Marshal Shaposhnikov was originally an Udaloy-class destroyer that was reclassified as a frigate after extensive modernization. The frigate’s weaponry allows it to engage naval targets, both surface and submersible. It can also launch Kalibr and Zircon cruise missiles against ground targets.

◻️ Admiral Tributs is a large anti-submarine ship (designated as a Udaloy-class destroyer in the West). ◻️ K-150 Tomsk is a nuclear-powered cruise-missile submarine (referred to in the West as Oscar II-class), built as a foil to enemy warships and aircraft carrier groups. Armed with torpedoes and anti-ship cruise missiles, Tomsk is a strictly naval combat weapon.

◻️ K-550 Alexander Nevsky is a Borei-class nuclear ballistic missile submarine. Armed with Bulava nuclear ballistic missiles, this vessel’s primary purpose is to ensure that no attack that might threaten the existence of Russia would go unpunished.

📹 Railway workers in Paris are on strike on the eve of a meeting of the SNCF to decide on bonuses for extra work during the Olympic Games. The unions are not satisfied with the proposed compensation amounts.
