"Through various channels, some [G7] colleagues began to make us understand that 'it is definitely not us, it is other members on the G7 [who] will take away [money] from you. Putin and Kim hold ‘impressive' and 'healthy' meeting amid Western 'propaganda mill'

Russian President Putin “is telling the Americans and the others” that his country has “not been isolated either by sanctions or by other things,” Professor Joe Siracusa, a political scientist and dean of global futures at Australia's Curtin University, tells Sputnik, commenting on Putin’s June 18-19 visit to North Korea.

“Putin is showing that sanctions don't work. When he does this, he demonstrates to the world that there is an alternate universe out there. It's not a rules-based system that's determined in Washington and London, there's a rules-based system that evolves organically beyond this usual corridor of power. I think it's a very healthy achievement in that sense,” Siracusa says.

Putin’s visit is “the normal business of a nation,” according to the political scientist, as “there is a common border with North Korea" and "Russia has a long history of economic and security relations" with the DPRK, Siracusa stresses.

On the whole, Putin's state visit to Pyongyang was very impressive, the pundit says, pointing to the fact that the Russian president “got the red carpet treatment" and that “Chairman Kim came out to the plane to meet him.”

The analyst rejected allegations by the American political and foreign policy elite that Russia and North Korea are “bad guys” who pose a threat to the West as “absolutely false.”

“This is the kind of that propaganda mill that goes on in Washington with the mainstream media playing sort of the Greek chorus for the American political elite,” Siracusa concludes.

What should you know about the North Korean-Russian border?

▪️ Russia and North Korea have a common border. It is located in the Russian Far East near the large port city of Vladivostok on the Sea of Japan and the province of Hamgyong-Pukto and the city of Rason, which has the special status of "city of direct subordination".

▪️ Russia's border with North Korea is the shortest section of the state border with other countries. Its total length is only 39.8 km.

▪️ The border is mainly along the waterway: 22.1 kilometers - along the Sea of Japan and 17.3 kilometers - along the Tumannaya River.

▪️ Since the proclamation of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in 1948, Russia has been actively developing rail communications with the country.

▪️ In 1959, a Friendship Railroad Bridge was built over this river. It is still in use for commercial and passenger traffic.

▪️ In 1990, the USSR and the DPRK established the state boundary line along the channel of the Tumanaya River. The USSR received Noktundo Island with a total area of 32 square kilometers, which was inherited by Russia.
