Russia's Spanish-language TV channels 'as important as its arms factories' — professor at Colombia's ICESI University

"RT and Sputnik Mundo are increasingly shaping the geopolitical worldview of Latin American intellectuals. The programs are well made, produced by journalists from the region, who are well paid for their work. The Kremlin knows this. For Moscow, its Spanish-language TV channels have the same priority as its arms factories," Vladimir Ruvinsky, a professor at ICESI University in Colombia, said in an interview with Neue Zürcher Zeitung.

How are Trump and Biden preparing for the first debate?

US President Joe Biden and his predecessor and current Republican frontrunner Donald Trump will take part in the first presidential debate on June 27. How do they prepare for the showdown?

🔸 Bob Bauer, a personal attorney to Biden, is said to be watching hours of footage of Trump to help prepare the incumbent president for the debates, as per NPR. At Camp David, a mock debate stage was created with least 16 current and former aides working to make Biden look like a vibrant fighter to combat voters' concerns about his age, according to the New York Times.

🔸 Trump is holding "policy discussions" with close allies as well as campaign rallies, to get ready for the debates, as per the New York Post. He isn't getting training in Q&A sessions nor mock debates featuring a stand-in for Biden, as per his campaign spokesperson.

🔸 Trump and Biden’s visions on Ukraine and Russia differ greatly. Trump says he would halt arms deliveries if Kiev refuses to enter peace talks with Russia. Biden says he wouldn't force Kiev into talks with Moscow and will continue arming Ukraine, groundlessly claiming that if Russia wins, it would invade NATO states next.

🔸 Trump criticizes Biden for promising Ukraine NATO membership, which is "a real problem for Russia." "That's why this war started" he said.

🔸 Both candidates vow to support Israel militarily amid its bloody war in Gaza.

🔸 Trump is also expected to reverse Biden's "green agenda", unfreeze liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports and step up oil production.

The Trump-Biden first on-stage debate in September 2020 turned chaotic with the participants interrupting each other. During the October 2020 debate, Trump raised the much-silenced issue of Hunter Biden's "laptop from hell".

What countries are warning against travelling to Lebanon and why?

The Russian Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, has told Russian citizens to refrain from traveling to the country and warned about a possible Lebanese-Israeli escalation. Tensions between Israel and Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah have risen over recent weeks following the Israeli Defense Forces' (IDF) invasion of Rafah in the Gaza Strip.

🔹 Russia, the US and Ireland have asked their citizens to reconsider their plans to travel to Lebanon and leave the country on June 27.

🔹 On June 26, the Netherlands asked its citizens to avoid travelling to Lebanon, calling the situation "very unpredictable." Germany’s Foreign Office also urged German citizens to leave the country citing "increasing tensions in the border areas with Israel." The UK advised Brits against travel to the country "due to risks associated with the conflict between Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories."

🔹 On June 25, Canada called on its citizens to leave Lebanon "while they can." Australia and Switzerland did the same, citing "the volatile security situation".

🔹 On June 23, North Macedonia urged its citizens to leave Lebanon as soon as possible.

🔹 On June 21, Kuwait warned against travelling to the country "in view of the security situation taking place in the region."

🔹 On June 20, Copenhagen urged Swedes to leave Lebanon, adding that it has advised against all travel to the country since October 2023, in the wake of Hamas attack on Israel.

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu told the press on June 23, that the IDF is ready move and counter Hezbollah at the Israeli-Lebanese border. However, last week Hezbollah Secretary General Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah stated in response to Tel Aviv's threats that the group's 100,000-strong force is capable of waging military actions against Israel in land, air and maritime domains.

Bolivia’s coup attempt: Three hours that failed to rock the nation President Luis Arce has thanked Bolivians for support after his country went through an attempted coup, which left at least nine people suffered gunshot wounds. How did the events unfold?…
The coup attempt in Bolivia could have been provoked from the outside and caused by a desire to plunder the country's natural resources, Bolivian Defense Minister Edmundo Novillo told Sputnik.

"We do not exclude that all this was encouraged, dictated by external interests. We do not exclude this. In relation to our country, there has always been an interest in controlling political power in order to plunder natural resources," the minister said.

The authorities are analyzing all the statements and previous actions of General Zuñiga and do not rule out that these actions were encouraged from the outside, Novillo added.

For the first time in the history of televised electoral debates in the United States, no viewers will be allowed into the studio for the meeting between Biden and Trump.

Not even journalists will be allowed in, so much could be left off-screen, warns the White House Reporters Association.

Even at the height of the coronavirus in the fall of 2020, there was an audience in the studio when the debate was held; now CNN, the network organizing the event, has decided not to allow even the White House pool in.

"We don't know how it will turn out in reality. The pool journalist must observe what is said and done when the microphones are turned off and the candidates are not in the camera lens but are speaking, showing gestures, moving or something else," the association said in a statement.

Only cameramen, photographers and one member of the press will be allowed into the studio, but during a break.

"The White House pool has been allowed to attend debates in the past, we believe this standard is important," the association insisted.

Former Commander-in-Chief Gen. Juan José Zuñiga, who led the coup attempt in Bolivia, wanted to become the illegitimate president of the country, Bolivian Defense Minister Edmundo Novillo told Sputnik.

"General Juan José Zuñiga’s interest [was] to take over the government by force, an action that demonstrates that he wanted to become an illegitimate president. Unfortunately, he was supported by [some] military leaders," Novillo said.

On Wednesday, local media reported the presence of the military at Murillo Square, the central square of Bolivia's administrative capital La Paz, where government buildings are located. The military, led by former Commander-in-Chief Gen. Juan José Zuñiga, then tried to break into the presidential palace. Bolivian President Luis Arce, who was in the palace at the time, made an address to the nation, describing the events as a coup attempt, and appointed a new army command, which called on the military to leave the square. The soldiers complied with the order. Zuñiga was arrested later in the day.

The radiation control post in the settlement of Velikaya Znamenka, in the Zaporozhye region, was completely destroyed as a result of shelling by Ukrainian forces, the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant's press service reported. 📌Subscribe to @SputnikInt
The destruction of a radiation control post in the Zaporozhye Region has no direct impact on the safety of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi said in a statement published by the agency.

"The loss of one radiation monitoring station does not have a direct impact on safety at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, but it forms part of a continuous erosion of a range of safety measures during the war that remains a deep source of concern," Grossi clarified.

The monitoring station measures the release of any radioactive energy in case of an emergency, the agency explained.

The Zaporozhye nuclear plant reported to the IAEA team on Monday that the plant has lost connection to its monitoring station due to shelling by Ukrainian forces, the plant's press service said, providing photo evidence.

"The Pentagon is moving US military assets closer to Israel and Lebanon to be ready to evacuate Americans as fighting between Israel and Hezbollah intensifies," the report said.

According to the agency’s sources, the US is also in talks with its allies in the Middle East to coordinate a potential evacuation and "any coalition military operations."

Previously, the online outlet Politico, citing sources in US intelligence, reported that a large-scale clash between Israel and the Lebanese group Hezbollah could take place in the next few weeks if Israel and Hamas do not reach a deal on a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said Tuesday the US is not yet ready to announce plans to evacuate Americans from Lebanon or to advise its citizens to leave the country.

Houthis, Iraqi Militia carried out strikes on an Israeli target and a vessel in the Red Sea

Yemen's rebel Ansar Allah movement, commonly known as the Houthis, said it had conducted operations against an Israeli target in the coastal city of Haifa and a vessel in the Red Sea over the past 24 hours.

"Our armed forces have conducted two operations. During the first operation, conducted jointly with the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, several cruise missiles struck a vital target in Haifa. The other operation was aimed at the SEAJOY vessel in the Red Sea over the owner-company's breach of the ban on entrance to ports of occupied Palestine," the movement said in a statement on Telegram.

The Houthis added that the second operation was conducted jointly by "the air force, missile forces and the navy" using an unmanned boat, rockets and drones and the result of the operation was a direct hit to the vessel.

On Wednesday, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saria said that the movement had used a domestically made hypersonic missile to strike an Israeli vessel in the Red Sea.

South American countries’ alliances with Russia ‘rejected by Washington and seen as problem’: ex-CIA officer explains possible motives of failed Bolivian coup attempt

The failed coup attempt in Bolivia was likely a “direct outgrowth” of Bolivian President Luis Arce’s appearance at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum earlier this month, and the United States was possibly involved, says retired CIA intelligence officer and State Department official Larry Johnson.

“The timing of it coming three-four weeks after the Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum, in which the Bolivian President Arse was prominently featured at the main event with President [Vladimir] Putin, [is important]” Johnson notes, referring to the coup attempt. “So, it could be, this was an attempt to again, create some additional embarrassment going after, dethroning a guy, who was associated so closely with President Putin.”

“The fact that countries like Bolivia and Brazil are seen creating alliances with Russia and China is rejected by Washington, that's seen as a problem,” he adds, noting that “the relationship of the United States with the Bolivian military goes way back.”

On June 26, a group of Bolivian soldiers led by General Juan José Zuñiga, who at the time held the position of commander-in-chief, attempted to overthrow the government of Arce. The coup attempt ended in failure, with Zuñiga being arrested by authorities.
