How are Trump and Biden preparing for the first debate? US President Joe Biden and his predecessor and current Republican frontrunner Donald Trump will take part in the first presidential debate on June 27. How do they prepare for the showdown? 🔸 Bob Bauer…
For the first time in the history of televised electoral debates in the United States, no viewers will be allowed into the studio for the meeting between Biden and Trump.

Not even journalists will be allowed in, so much could be left off-screen, warns the White House Reporters Association.

Even at the height of the coronavirus in the fall of 2020, there was an audience in the studio when the debate was held; now CNN, the network organizing the event, has decided not to allow even the White House pool in.

"We don't know how it will turn out in reality. The pool journalist must observe what is said and done when the microphones are turned off and the candidates are not in the camera lens but are speaking, showing gestures, moving or something else," the association said in a statement.

Only cameramen, photographers and one member of the press will be allowed into the studio, but during a break.

"The White House pool has been allowed to attend debates in the past, we believe this standard is important," the association insisted.

Bolivian Interior Minister Eduardo del Castillo has presented General Juan José Zuñiga, who has been detained after a coup attempt, to the media, a Sputnik correspondent reported. Zuñiga was in handcuffs and was wearing a bulletproof vest that read "detained…
Former Commander-in-Chief Gen. Juan José Zuñiga, who led the coup attempt in Bolivia, wanted to become the illegitimate president of the country, Bolivian Defense Minister Edmundo Novillo told Sputnik.

"General Juan José Zuñiga’s interest [was] to take over the government by force, an action that demonstrates that he wanted to become an illegitimate president. Unfortunately, he was supported by [some] military leaders," Novillo said.

On Wednesday, local media reported the presence of the military at Murillo Square, the central square of Bolivia's administrative capital La Paz, where government buildings are located. The military, led by former Commander-in-Chief Gen. Juan José Zuñiga, then tried to break into the presidential palace. Bolivian President Luis Arce, who was in the palace at the time, made an address to the nation, describing the events as a coup attempt, and appointed a new army command, which called on the military to leave the square. The soldiers complied with the order. Zuñiga was arrested later in the day.

The radiation control post in the settlement of Velikaya Znamenka, in the Zaporozhye region, was completely destroyed as a result of shelling by Ukrainian forces, the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant's press service reported. 📌Subscribe to @SputnikInt
The destruction of a radiation control post in the Zaporozhye Region has no direct impact on the safety of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi said in a statement published by the agency.

"The loss of one radiation monitoring station does not have a direct impact on safety at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, but it forms part of a continuous erosion of a range of safety measures during the war that remains a deep source of concern," Grossi clarified.

The monitoring station measures the release of any radioactive energy in case of an emergency, the agency explained.

The Zaporozhye nuclear plant reported to the IAEA team on Monday that the plant has lost connection to its monitoring station due to shelling by Ukrainian forces, the plant's press service said, providing photo evidence.

The US military is moving its forces closer to Lebanon and Israel to evacuate American citizens in case the standoff between Israel and Hezbollah escalates, NBC News reported, citing sources.

"The Pentagon is moving US military assets closer to Israel and Lebanon to be ready to evacuate Americans as fighting between Israel and Hezbollah intensifies," the report said.

According to the agency’s sources, the US is also in talks with its allies in the Middle East to coordinate a potential evacuation and "any coalition military operations."

Previously, the online outlet Politico, citing sources in US intelligence, reported that a large-scale clash between Israel and the Lebanese group Hezbollah could take place in the next few weeks if Israel and Hamas do not reach a deal on a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said Tuesday the US is not yet ready to announce plans to evacuate Americans from Lebanon or to advise its citizens to leave the country.

Houthis, Iraqi Militia carried out strikes on an Israeli target and a vessel in the Red Sea

Yemen's rebel Ansar Allah movement, commonly known as the Houthis, said it had conducted operations against an Israeli target in the coastal city of Haifa and a vessel in the Red Sea over the past 24 hours.

"Our armed forces have conducted two operations. During the first operation, conducted jointly with the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, several cruise missiles struck a vital target in Haifa. The other operation was aimed at the SEAJOY vessel in the Red Sea over the owner-company's breach of the ban on entrance to ports of occupied Palestine," the movement said in a statement on Telegram.

The Houthis added that the second operation was conducted jointly by "the air force, missile forces and the navy" using an unmanned boat, rockets and drones and the result of the operation was a direct hit to the vessel.

On Wednesday, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saria said that the movement had used a domestically made hypersonic missile to strike an Israeli vessel in the Red Sea.

South American countries’ alliances with Russia ‘rejected by Washington and seen as problem’: ex-CIA officer explains possible motives of failed Bolivian coup attempt

The failed coup attempt in Bolivia was likely a “direct outgrowth” of Bolivian President Luis Arce’s appearance at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum earlier this month, and the United States was possibly involved, says retired CIA intelligence officer and State Department official Larry Johnson.

“The timing of it coming three-four weeks after the Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum, in which the Bolivian President Arse was prominently featured at the main event with President [Vladimir] Putin, [is important]” Johnson notes, referring to the coup attempt. “So, it could be, this was an attempt to again, create some additional embarrassment going after, dethroning a guy, who was associated so closely with President Putin.”

“The fact that countries like Bolivia and Brazil are seen creating alliances with Russia and China is rejected by Washington, that's seen as a problem,” he adds, noting that “the relationship of the United States with the Bolivian military goes way back.”

On June 26, a group of Bolivian soldiers led by General Juan José Zuñiga, who at the time held the position of commander-in-chief, attempted to overthrow the government of Arce. The coup attempt ended in failure, with Zuñiga being arrested by authorities.

A debate between 'two senior citizens'

US President Joe Biden and his predecessor, former President Donald Trump are scheduled to take part in their first televised debate on Thursday night. Most surveys show the candidates as polling just one point of each other, yet Forbes reported that a recent New York Times/Siena poll showed Trump about six points ahead of his Democratic competitor.

“Speaking of professor Cornel West, he suggests that the choice is between civil war as fomented by Donald J. Trump, or, World War III as fomented by the misguided foreign policies of one [US President] Joseph R. Biden,” said the writer and scholar Gerald Horne, who sat down with Sputnik’s The Critical Hour to discuss the upcoming debate on Thursday.

The poll also found that 60% of respondents believe Trump will perform “very” or “somewhat” well compared to 46% who said the same about Biden. And a separate poll released by Quinnipiac University found that 16% of voters are open to changing who they will vote for in November based on how candidates perform in the debate.

“With regard to Mr. Biden, it seems to me every time he mentions the word Ukraine, every time he mentions the name Zelensky, and perhaps even every time he mentions Israel and Netanyahu, he will be putting his foot in his mouth because these foreign conflicts that give fare to ignite World War III are quite dangerous and quite ominous,” the show's guest said.

The European Union needs to invest 500 billion euros ($535 billion) in defense in the next ten years, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said.

"Europe as a whole needs to step up on defense ... We estimate that additional defense investments of around 500 billion euros are needed over the next decade," Von der Leyen told a news conference in Brussels.

She added that the EU has fallen far behind China and Russia in increasing defense spending in recent years.

The European Commission president said the funds could come both from additional national contributions by the EU member states and from the bloc's own funds.

The leaders of the European Union at a summit meeting in Brussels have called for an increase in deliveries of military support to Ukraine, including missiles, ammunition and air defense systems, the Summit Conclusions document has shown.

"The European Council calls for the delivery of military support to Ukraine to be stepped up. In particular, air defense systems, ammunition and missiles are urgently needed," the document read.

The summit also have called for the establishment of a new sanctions regime in response to Russia's alleged "destabilizing actions abroad," according to the statement.

"In response to Russia's destabilizing actions abroad, the European Council reiterates its call for work to be taken forward in the Council to establish a new sanctions regime," the Summit Conclusions document claimed.

Moscow has repeatedly warned NATO countries that by supplying arms to Ukraine, they are both prolonging the conflict and dangerously escalating it.

Debate preview: ‘arrogant’ Democrats tasked with selling Biden to wary public

"Both teams essentially are owned and operated by the exact same people and they don’t work for the public,” highlighted commentator and podcast host Misty Winston on Sputnik’s The Critical Hour program.

“How is Joe Biden from Delaware – Mr. Genocide, corporate Joe – how is he going to do this?” host Wilmer Leon asked. Biden has historically been recognized for his affinity with large financial institutions, many of which are headquartered in Delaware to take advantage of the state’s low taxes and lax regulation.

“I'm also very curious about this 'compelling anti-monopoly record,’” Winston said. “I would like to see that. I don't know anything about that. So, maybe it's been kept a secret from all of us.”

“It is all about narrative,” the analyst claimed. “It has nothing to do with his actual policy positions, his actual record.”

“That's the arrogance,” said host Garland Nixon, responding to Democratic Party operatives’ insistence that “too few Americans know” about Biden’s economic record. “‘The economy is good, you people are just too stupid to know it! Joe Biden is a populist!’ All their argument is always, ‘we've got to get the message to these poor idiots and saps that just don't know… We're fools, that's the problem.”

“Yeah, it's always the voters’ fault,” said Winston mockingly.
