Failed UK migration policy highlighted by abandoned Rwanda scheme

The new British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has confirmed he is scrapping plans by his Conservative predecessors to send illegal immigrants to Rwanda.

The policy, which aimed to deter people-trafficking and manage illegal arrivals by relocating migrants to the African country, was condemned by the Labour Party leader.

"The Rwanda scheme was dead and buried before it started,” the new PM declared. “It’s never been a deterrent to the flow of illegals crossing the Channel."

The initiative cost the UK approximately £300 million ($371 million), including logistical arrangements, legal fees and the construction of housing in Rwanda, which will now be sold to Rwandan people.

Despite Tory promises to reduce immigration, net migration reached a record high of 672,000 in the year ending June 2023, significantly higher than 2019 levels. The new points-based immigration system introduced post-Brexit aimed to balance the influx from EU and non-EU countries but led to complaints by employers of labor shortages in sectors like hospitality and transport.

The UK has experienced a surge in undocumented migrants crossing the English Channel, leading to political and social challenges. The Rwanda deportation strategy faced legal hurdles and criticism from human rights organizations and political opponents, who argued that the plan was both inhumane and ineffective.

Since 2018, over 120,000 illegal migrants have crossed the English Channel into Britain in dangerously-overloaded inflatable boats. The government spends several million pounds daily to house refugees in hotels.

"Instead, it doubles-down on Ukraine’s irreversible course to NATO membership, which will never happen because of Russia’s opposition, but which will needlessly and recklessly prolong the current war," he said.

Day two of the NATO summit and the alliance’s message to China is one of the main topics in Western media:

🔸NYT: Just a year ago, leaders were hesitant to challenge China - especially countries like Germany, which views China as the most important market for expensive cars and luxury goods.

🔸El Mundo: NATO wants its 75th summit to be remembered for China-related messages.

🔸Washington Post: The alliance is seeking to make itself "Trump-proof" in light of Trump's possible victory in the November election. NATO leaders are wary of the skeptic Trump and his unpredictability in relations with the alliance.

🔸Le Point: For the leaders of the US and France, the summit comes at “the worst possible time” for them. Macron arrived at the meeting a day later than the others and did not say a word. Biden is trying to demonstrate vigor under pressure from party members.

In turn, the Chinese embassy in the US told Sputnik that Beijing is against mentioning itself as a “threat” in NATO documents and believes that the alliance should stop making unfounded accusations.

China emphasizes that trade relations with Russia follow market rules and WTO principles and such cooperation is not subject to any criticism. The country also rejects all claims of complicity in the Ukrainian conflict, noting that it does not supply weapons to either side.

Moscow not to take part in new summit on Ukraine, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin told Sputnik

“We know the intentions of the Kiev regime and its Western mentors to 'rehabilitate themselves' for the failed 'peace summit' in Burgenstock, Switzerland in mid-June this year and try to hold a similar event,” he said, adding that “they are even thinking of inviting Russia.”

“The specific location has not been determined. However, geography is not of fundamental importance. What is more important is the content, with which everything is extremely clear,” Galuzin said.

He said Russia hears the rhetoric that it has already heard in the hope of pushing through the ultimatum 'Zelensky formula', and also sees a deliberate disregard for other initiatives to resolve the Ukrainian crisis.
