US President Joe Biden will deliver an address in the wake of the shooting at a rally of his predecessor former President Donald Trump, Congressman Chip Roy said.

"I have been informed that Biden will address the nation," Roy wrote on the social media platform X.

Earlier, Trump cut short a public appearance after he suffered a gunshot wound. A video shows the politician being led away by security with a bloody ear.

US President Joe Biden said that he is grateful to hear that former President Donald Trump is safe after an apparent shooting at his rally and emphasized that there is no place for this kind of violence in the United States.

"I have been briefed on the shooting at Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania," Biden said in a statement. "I’m grateful to hear that he’s safe and doing well. I’m praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally, as we await further information. Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety. There’s no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it."

Biden will deliver remarks on Saturday evening following the shooting at a Trump campaign rally, the White House said in a statement.

Trump became the second former US president and candidate to be shot.

In 1912 former President Theodore Roosevelt was shot just before a campaign event. Despite the incident he spoke in front of his supporters for about an hour and a half. In 1916 a knife was thrown at Roosevelt from a crowd; the former president was not hurt.

There have been several unsuccessful attempts on the lives of sitting US presidents:

🔻 In 1835 Andrew Jackson was shot but the assailant's weapon misfired. The president struck back at the attacker with a cane.

🔻 In 1975 Gerald Ford suffered two assassination attempts.

🔻 In 1981 Ronald Reagan was shot six times. He was seriously wounded but survived the incident and completed two terms in the White House.

🔻 In 2005 a grenade was thrown at George W. Bush in Tbilisi, Georgia. It did not go off.

Four US presidents have been killed in assassination attempts:

Abraham Lincoln was shot in 1865. In 1881, James Garfield was fatally shot. In 1901, William McKinley was shot and killed. In 1963, John F. Kennedy was assassinated.

The sniper who fired at Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania was positioned on the roof of a building hundreds of yards away from the former president, the New York Post writes, citing law enforcement sources.

“The attack is believed to have come from a sniper positioned on a building hundreds of yards from the former president — outside the security cordon, according to law enforcement sources,” the report said.

The newspaper reported that nine shots were fired during the incident.

The suspected gunman fired multiple shots toward the stage during Trump's rally from outside the event, the US Secret Service said in a statement.

The suspect was neutralized. He managed to kill one spectator at the campaign rally and seriously wounded two others.

"During former President Trump's campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on the evening of July 13 at approximately 6:15 p.m.[22:15 GMT], a suspected shooter fired multiple shots toward the stage from an elevated position outside of the rally venue," the statement said on Saturday, adding that "US Secret Service personnel neutralized the shooter, who is now deceased."

"Conspiracy" or reality?

Almost a year ago a writer for NBC News mocked journalist Tucker Carlson for envisaging an assassination attempt on former US president Donald Trump.

"Tucker Carlson, the far-right media personality who was fired by Fox News earlier this year, claimed without evidence this week that the United States is 'speeding towards' the assassination of former President Donald Trump," the liberal media outlet sneered.

Today's event would seem to suggest there was some merit to Carlson's assessment, NBC's "conspiracy" claims notwithstanding.

Former President Donald Trump still plans on attending the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee this coming week, his campaign said.

"President Trump looks forward to joining you all in Milwaukee as we proceed with our convention to nominate him to serve as the 47th President of the United States. As our party's nominee, President Trump will continue to share his vision to Make America Great Again," the Trump campaign said in a press release on Saturday evening.

Earlier in the day, Trump said a bullet from a suspected shooter pierced the upper part of his right ear during a shooting at his campaign rally in the state of Pennsylvania.

The US Secret Service said the suspected shooter was killed by US Secret Service agents, but one spectator was killed and two others were critically injured during the incident . According to media reports, this incident is being investigated as an assassination attempt.
