Ukrainians blow a gasket online after Trump picks JD Vance as VP

Donald Trump’s nomination of Senator JD Vance as his running mate in the 2024 US presidential election elicited a nervous reaction from Ukraine, in no small part due to the fact that Vance has long been a vocal opponent of further US military funding of Kiev.

“Vance is an outspoken pro-Russian populist who will give Ukraine to the Russians at the first opportunity. This is very bad news for us,” one Ukrainian-language user lamented.

“It's a damn shame they didn't shoot him yesterday,” another one complained, apparently referring to the recent attempt on Trump’s life.

“We are screwed,” another user simply tweeted.

Damn, Vance also speaks okay while she tends to ramble,” one netizen wrote about the prospects of VP debates between JD Vance and Democrat VP Kamala Harris.

When one Ukrainian media outlet quoted Politico as saying that Vance becoming Trump’s VP pick is a disaster for Ukraine, several X users replied that Zelensky is a much bigger problem. “With Zelenzky [in charge] it’s a disaster one way or the other,” one remarked.

“The disaster for Ukraine was the fatal choice of a wise nation in 2019, which completely killed any hopes for our future, and everything that followed was only its logical development,” another claimed, referring to the last Ukrainian presidential election.

“For Ukraine, its inhabitants are a disaster. The only nation on the planet that in thirty years screwed the country into garbage and engaged in self-destruction,” argued yet another netizen.

Donald Trump's VP pick James David Vance, or J. D. Vance, is a former US Marine corporal, a best-selling author, Yale Law School graduate, Silicon Valley venture capitalist and presently a junior US senator from Ohio.

What is Trump's running mate famous for?

▪️Vance used to call himself a "never Trump". In the lead-up to the 2016 presidential election he told NPR: "I can't stomach Trump." In 2017 he called the then-president a "moral disaster."

▪️By 2020, Vance changed his mind and voted for Trump. Vance believes the 2020 election was stolen from Trump.

▪️In 2021, he announced he was running for Ohio, publicly apologized for his critical remarks towards the former president, and sought Trump's endorsement and succeeded.

▪️Unlike many Republican anti-vaxxers, he got the shot and encouraged at-risk families to do the same. Still, he denounced Ohio State's vaccine mandate as an "invasion of medical privacy" in 2021.

▪️Vance called January Sixers, who participated in Capitol protests of January 6, 2021, "political prisoners" in a January 2022 tweet.

▪️Vance shredded the idea that Russian President Vladimir Putin would attack a NATO country after winning in Ukraine as "preposterous" while speaking to CNN last December.

▪️In mid-February he told the Senate that Russia "is not going to lose" in the Ukraine conflict, adding that the continuous funding of the Kiev regime's military effort is a senseless waste of money.

▪️In May, Vance slammed Joe Biden's Israel policy as "fundamentally incoherent" and called to arm Tel Aviv so that it can eliminate the Hamas military and leadership in the Gaza Strip.

▪️"We are stretched way too thin," he told CNN in April, insisting that the US should focus on rebuilding its own economy prior to disbursing foreign aid.
