What does US' Copa America 2024 disaster say about its ability to host World Cup 2026
This year's Copa America was definitely a memorable footballing event but for all the wrong reasons: instead of dazzling displays, what made the headlines were coaches’ complaints and fan-related troubles linked to dire organization.
The disastrous final at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami was the proverbial cherry on the top, raising concerns about whether the United States will be able to host the World Cup in 2026.
The game that eventually saw Argentina crowned champions started nearly an hour and a half late due to a throng of unticketed fans entering the stewardess gates and taking advantage of dire organization from the stadium's staff.
Fans who actually bought tickets were forced to wait outside in the summer heat while security staff temporarily closed access to the stadium.
When the stadium gates were finally opened and fans rushed inside, it was not clear whether their tickets were even scanned, one local media outlet noted.
In other problems, Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa slammed the quality of the pitches and training facilities.
For his part, Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni also complained that the field his team had to play their opening game at was not a “good field.”
Likewise, some Canadian players complained that they were "not treated like professionals" during the US-hosted tournament.
The MailOnline, however, claimed that the tournament’s organizer CONMEBOL is “more to blame” than the host United States.

“They've said that the pitches are in perfect condition and all the lies they have said here, doing a press conference to say that the pitches are perfect and you see how the grass patches won't work,” Bielsa said during a press conference. “And they said the training facilities are perfect, but Bolivia couldn't train and I have pictures to prove that it's all lies, this is a plague of liars.”
For his part, Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni also complained that the field his team had to play their opening game at was not a “good field.”
“Sincerely, the field is not apt for these players,” he said.

Potential Ukrainian trace in Trump's attempted murder – Ukrainian opposition politician
Donald Trump's shooter was not a lone wolf, the Other Ukraine movement's Council Chair Viktor Medvedchuk has suggested in a letter to Trump in the wake of his July 13 assassination attempt, hinting at Ukrainian involvement.
Medvedchuk drew attention to the fact that a day before the assassination attempt, Kyrylo Budanov, the chief of Ukraine's Main Directorate of Intelligence, bragged to the Ukrainian press that there had been several attempts to kill Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In May 2023 in one of his interviews, Budanov acknowledged that the Ukrainian intelligence had been involved in terrorist attacks against a number of Russian public and media figures.
Medvedchuk didn't rule out that the attempted murder of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who ardently advocated halting the flow of EU weapons to Ukraine, was carried out in May by "another supporter of the Ukrainian neo-Nazi regime."
"The struggle for peace in Ukraine is increasingly causing open aggression on the part of war supporters and is becoming more and more dangerous," the Ukrainian politician stressed. Zelensky’s personal interest in prolonging hostilities in Ukraine in order to stay in power could lead to an aggravation of the conflict and create a threat to the entire world, warned Medvedchuk.

Donald Trump's shooter was not a lone wolf, the Other Ukraine movement's Council Chair Viktor Medvedchuk has suggested in a letter to Trump in the wake of his July 13 assassination attempt, hinting at Ukrainian involvement.
"On the campaign trail, you have repeatedly stated that you will be able to bring peace to the long-suffering Ukrainian land," continued Medvedchuk.
"But this peace means the loss of power by the Zelensky [neo-] Nazi regime and its American handlers in the Biden administration… It is because of this, dear Mr. Trump, that you have become a personal enemy of Ukrainian neo-Nazi [Volodymyr] Zelensky, this scoundrel would do whatever it takes to prevent you from winning the presidential election. I think that a Ukrainian trace will appear in the attempted murder case."

F-16's shadow: The cryptic death of an American attaché in Ukraine
An US Embassy attaché whose death in Kiev on June 24 was hardly noted by his superiors turned out to be a US Air Force professional. A few weeks later, the outlet Strana ua speculated that he was an American overseeing the delivery of F-16 fighters to Ukraine.
Richard Kirlin died only 10 days after coming to Ukraine on June 15. Even though the embassy limited itself to a brief announcement without providing his bio, an online memorial platform published his obituary with a “life story”. So what did Kirlin do in Kiev?
▪️It’s not quite clear what he specifically did in Kiev, but the US announced the delivery of the first F-16s at the NATO summit almost a month after Kirlin’s arrival to Ukraine. The Americans felt they did not need a green light from allies to start working.
▪️Kirlin was an ace specialized in air force logistics, a vital skill for Ukraine with the expected arrival of US-made Dutch and Danish F-16 fighters this summer. The WSJ reported that a total of 80 aircraft will eventually be provided to Kiev, with the jets flying in Ukrainian skies this summer, as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken assured at the latest NATO summit.
▪️Kirlin was a soldier from a young age: “Richard 'Rich' Harry Kirlin was born in Slayton, Minnesota, on May 31, 1967… While still in high school he joined the Minnesota Army National Guard… On October 11, 1985, Richard entered the Air Force as a Security Forces Police,” the obituary says. Serving at various air force bases, Kirlin worked with CENTCOM, the Central Command of the US armed forces.
▪️The obituary notes that he was employed through the Department of Defense before eventually working for the State Department, with assignments at US Embassies in Nouakchott, Mauritania; Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Tegucigalpa, Honduras; and most recently Kiev, Ukraine, while remaining secretive about the reasons for his employment changes.

🇮🇷 Iran rejects "malicious" claims about Tehran plotting to kill Trump - mission to UN
Allegations of Iran plotting to kill former US President Donald Trump are "unsubstantiated and malicious," the Iranian mission to the UN told Sputnik.
CNN reported earlier in the day that US intelligence authorities in recent weeks have uncovered an alleged plan by Iran to kill Trump without any known link to the assassination attempt during a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.

Allegations of Iran plotting to kill former US President Donald Trump are "unsubstantiated and malicious," the Iranian mission to the UN told Sputnik.
"These associations are unsubstantiated and malicious. From the perspective of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Trump is a criminal who must be prosecuted and punished in a court of law for ordering the assassination of General Soleimani," the mission said. "Iran has chosen the legal path to bring him to justice."

"I don't love sanctions," Trump said as quoted by Bloomberg News in an interview published Tuesday.
"We are so stupid, what we do. You know, I had no problems with China. I had no problems with Russia. I had no problems with anybody. Because we, at this moment, have a country that has a lot of economic power. We’re losing that power rapidly. Rapidly. We’re also losing our standard—you know, they’re going off the dollar," Trump said, noting the trend towards de-dollarization in the Global South.
