Global tech glitch affected 8.5m Windows devices, Microsoft says

A global failure of Windows-based equipment affected telecommunications operators, banks, and airlines around the world. US company CrowdStrike confirmed that the global failure had occurred due to its update for the Falcon Sensor cybersecurity application.

"We currently estimate that CrowdStrike’s update affected 8.5 million Windows devices, or less than one percent of all Windows machines. While the percentage was small, the broad economic and societal impacts reflect the use of CrowdStrike by enterprises that run many critical services," the company said in a statement.

The statement added that hundreds of Microsoft engineers and experts were dispatched in response to fix the causes of the outage, working directly with customers.

US to draft document on defending Japan with nukes

The US and Japan have agreed to draw up the first document, with a clause stipulating the former’s commitment to defend Japan, including with nuclear weapons, the Yomiuri newspaper writes, citing sources.

The document will include:

▫️ measures that the US could take in peacetime and emergencies;

▫️ conditions under which the US could take retaliatory actions against third countries, and what those measures could be.

The foreign and defense ministers of Japan and the US will discuss the details at a meeting in Tokyo later this month.

Should we remind them that it was the US who had nuked Japan at the end of WWII?🤔

US Secret Service rejected requests to strengthen Trump's security - reports

The US Secret Service says it rejected requests to strengthen former US President Donald Trump's security with its resources for two years before the assassination attempt, The New York Times reported, citing Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the Secret Service.

At the same time, Guglielmi noted that the requests for beefed-up security did not specifically concern the event in Pennsylvania where Trump was wounded in a shooting, the report said.

He also added that in cases where the Secret Service was unable to provide additional security for Trump, it had deployed state or local law enforcement officers, or altered security plans, to reduce the threat to Trump's life, the report read.

The shooting took place on July 13 at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump sustained a gun wound to his right ear and was briefly hospitalized.

New Canada’s defense chief is another inclusivity ‘nail in the coffin’ of the armed forces

General Jennie Carignan has officially taken over command of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) on Thursday as the army now grapples with a "toxic culture" Carignan was tasked to make "more respectful and inclusive," state website reported.

Many X users slammed the appointment saying: “Is this a DEI [diversity, equity and inclusion] hire?” Another user described it as “just another DEI nail in the coffin of the CF.” “Another handpicked DEI. She hasn't seen a minute of action. Those badges of honor were 3D printed,” one more user claimed.

Others bashed her nomination as a “national embarrassment” and PM Justin Trudeau’s “coup de grace" for DND (Department of National Defense).” According to one post, the nomination is a “diversity hire of the worst type; our military is no longer legitimate nor worthy of our respect.”

The developments come as real problems of the Canadian Armed Forces show no sign of being resolved:

🔸 Just 61% of the Canadian military are considered operationally ready, while only 40% are capable of providing simultaneous operational support, per government data.

🔸 The country’s armed forces are short of almost 16,000 regular and reserve troops, with nearly 10,500 soldiers still in training and unready for deployment, according to former Canadian Chief of Defense Staff Wayne Eyre.

🔸 The Canadian army’s aging ships, planes, and other items of equipment, have reportedly "become difficult and costly to maintain”, with the DND considering their retirement.

🔸 The military is running out of ammo, with no plans to replenish it, according to Andrew Leslie, former chief of staff of the Canadian Army.

🔸 Youri Cormier, executive director of an Ottawa-based national security organization, has insisted that the “extremely dire” situation in the Canadian Armed Forces is the product of “decades of consistent underfunding.”
