Lucky guy? No charges for Andrew Cuomo in COVID nursing home death investigation
The Manhattan District Attorney’s office will not file criminal charges in connection with the handling of the release of figures documenting coronavirus deaths in New York state nursing homes during the tenure of former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, his attorney, Elkan Abramowitz, said on Monday.
🗣 “I was contacted today by the head of the Elder Care Unit from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office who informed me they have closed its investigation involving the Executive Chamber and nursing homes. I was told that after a thorough investigation – as we have said all along – there was no evidence to suggest that any laws were broken,” Abramowitz said in a statement.
An investigation by the New York attorney general found that Cuomo’s administration undercounted coronavirus-related deaths at nursing homes by as much as 50 percent.

One of the biggest mid-Atlantic snowstorms in recent years kills at least two and leaves hundreds of thousands without power.
The snow fell quickly, accumulating to about a foot throughout Washington DC, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and southern New Jersey. The massive storm also stretched into northern Alabama, northern Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and even the Florida Panhandle.
After heavy snowfall in Townsend, Tennessee, a tree collapsed on a rental home killing a 7 year-old girl who was in her bed. A similar tragedy occurred in Decatur, Georgia, involving a 5 year-old who died when a tree fell on his home. Officials are speculating that the tree in Decatur fell due to extremely wet and windy weather conditions.

Actress Betty White’s agent confirmed that the television star passed away “peacefully in her sleep” at her Brentwood home on New Year’s Eve.
Shortly after the iconic US actress died on New Years Eve, three weeks before her 100th birthday, rumors had circulated online that White had passed away shortly after receiving a COVID-19 booster shot. White’s agent and friend, Jeff Witjas, told the Associated Press that White had not received the jab that day, and did not comment on whether she had received one.
“People are saying her death was related to getting a booster shot three days earlier, but that is not true. She died of natural causes,” Witjas told the magazine. “Her death should not be politicized — that is not the life she lived.”

Verizon and AT&T will delay their "game-changing" 5G rollout, originally scheduled for January 5, for two more weeks.
A statement from Verizon reads: “We’ve agreed to a two-week delay which promises the certainty of bringing this nation our game-changing 5G network in January, delivered over America’s best and most reliable network.”
An AT&T statement adds more detail: “At Secretary Buttigieg’s request, we have voluntarily agreed to one additional two-week delay of our deployment of C-Band 5G services. We also remain committed to the six-month protection zone mitigations we outlined in our letter. We know aviation safety and 5G can co-exist and we are confident further collaboration and technical assessment will allay any issues.”

Thousands of drivers were stranded on Interstate 95 in Virginia, trapped in their vehicles for hours after the highway was shut down during the sudden blizzard.
Traffic on a 47-mile stretch of the highway, which ordinarily takes about an hour to travel, came to a halt on Monday evening and had not resumed on Tuesday morning.
Many motorists, trapped in their cars for over 20 hours, endured frigid temperatures without food or water, until others similarly trapped but better prepared came to their rescue. A Connecticut family returning from Florida in a car packed with oranges handed out fruit to those in need during the night. At the same time, the Schmidt Baking Company agreed to have one of their trucks, also stranded on the highway, opened so that bread could be shared.
Virginia state and local emergency workers worked to remove felled trees, reroute drivers and help with the disabled vehicles.
