🇻🇪 Venezuela kicks off voting in presidential election

Polling stations officially opened in Venezuela on Sunday for a presidential election that will shape the nation's political trajectory for the next six years.

Voting is taking place from 6 a.m. (10:00 GMT) to 6 p.m. local time, with the possibility of extended hours based on voter turnout.

The National Electoral Council is expected to announce the initial official results late Monday night once the counting trend becomes irreversible. Candidates need a simple majority of the votes to win.

Incumbent President Nicolas Maduro was among the first to cast his ballot in the presidential election. He arrived at the Simon Rodriguez ecological school polling station in Caracas shortly after it opened, a Sputnik correspondent reported.

This year's election day coincides with the birthday of former President Hugo Chavez. Maduro's supporters, following Chavismo, are expected to back him for continued economic recovery despite sanctions. Meanwhile, the opposition seeks to return to a liberal market system, hoping for US support in the event of a victory.

The president-elect will assume office on January 10, 2025 and serve a six-year term.

🇱🇧🇮🇱 Hezbollah dismisses evacuation rumors amid rising tensions with Israel

Information about the evacuation of facilities of the Lebanese Shia movement Hezbollah from the south and east of Lebanon in anticipation of a possible Israeli operation following the shelling of the Golan Heights is "rumors," a Lebanese source authorized to comment on the issue told Sputnik on Sunday.

"The situation at the front with Israel has not changed, there is no evacuation of Hezbollah positions, as they say. Such conversations are conducted as an element of psychological warfare and are rumors," the source said.

Previously two security sources told Reuters Hezbollah was on high alert and had preemptively cleared out some key sites in both Lebanon's south and the eastern Bekaa Valley in the event of a possible Israeli attack.

Meanwhile Israeli Ynet reports that Israel is not planning a full-scale war with Lebanon after the shelling of the Golan Heights, the Israeli portal Ynet writes, quoting a number of high-ranking officials. It claimed the intensity of the fighting with Hezbollah would only increase for a few days.

The consecration ceremony of the New Chersonesos Museum and temple complex took place in Sevastopol

12 bishops and more than 100 other clergymen marched in a procession from the Museum of Christianity to St. Vladimir's Cathedral in the Tauride Chersonesos, consecrating the main objects of the museum and temple complex: museums of Christianity, Antiquity and Byzantium, Crimea and Novorossiya, the temple park, the Griffin Arena amphitheater and the reconstructed Byzantine Quarter.

After the procession, the opening of the monument to the Holy Prince Vladimir, equal to the Apostles, took place. The monument is installed near St. Vladimir's Cathedral, which was opened after restoration.

The New Chersonesos was built with unprecedented speed — in just a year and eight months.

Golan attack ‘inflection point’ threatens to trigger ‘large-scale war’, pull others into ‘quagmire’

“I believe that a prolonged ground invasion of south Lebanon will invite multiple foreign actors in the quagmire,” Lebanese American University academic Joseph Helou told Sputnik, commenting on the precarious situation in the region after Saturday’s deadly attack on the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights town of Majdal Shams.

Hezbollah and Israel in their own right “possess enormous military capabilities that could make a full-blown war quite destructive for both sides,” Helou stressed.

As for Israel’s ultimatum Sunday demanding Hezbollah’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon, this is unrealistic, the observer believes.

“No previous Hezbollah-Israel showdown has witnessed implicit concession-making in the midst of the conflict without the brokerage of an international mediator. Therefore, such resolutions can help resolve the conflict once capable mediators begin to propose the issues that could remedy some of the conflictual matters,” Helou said.

Commenting on several reports regarding the attack on Majdal Shams as a possibly “fabricated scenario” designed to distract from Israeli actions in Gaza, or even a false-flag to justify a full-scale intervention, Dr. Helou said that while he could not confirm the authenticity of such claims, it is clear that “some actors may have an interest in taking action against Hezbollah.”

Israeli Druze politician and Knesset member Akram Hasson takes the opposite view, expressing certainty about Hezbollah’s responsibility, and support for Netanyahu’s promise “that the Israeli army will not stop attacking Lebanon and [are] going to attack Hezbollah very hard.”
