🇺🇸🇷🇺 US Democratic senators will present a new Russia sanctions bill on Wednesday that would bring "severe costs" to the Russian economy in the event of an invasion of Ukraine, in an effort backed by the White House, The Washington Post reports.

The bill would hit companies in Russia that offer secure messaging systems such as SWIFT.

The measure comes as the Biden administration tries to prevent Democrat defection in support of a Republican-led bill targeting Russia's Nord Stream 2, an effort the White House says may undermine its reengagement with Europe.

Empty shelves and food supply problems – another food crisis in the US. Meanwhile, the country is setting world records for the number of people infected with the coronavirus due to the Omicron strain.

Can things get any worse?
📈 The United States posted 7.0% annual inflation, the highest since 1982

Energy prices rose 29.3% and food prices 6.3%, according to the CPI index (CPI). If these volatile sectors are excluded, core inflation reached 5.5%, its highest level since February 1991.

Inflation, which many economists, including those in the White House and the Federal Reserve, viewed as a transitory phenomenon, became "public enemy number one." If the inflationary push continues beyond the middle of 2022, "we will react accordingly," said Jerome Powell, president of the Fed.

Powell attributed most of the rise in inflation to a "mismatch" between supply and demand caused by disruptions in the supply chain, and emphasized that regaining price stability is a priority for the Fed.

🚁 Miracle in Philadelphia: a medical helicopter crashed, and all four people on board survived

A pilot made a forced landing of a medical helicopter on Tuesday without loss of life near the Drexel Hill United Methodist Church in Upper Darby's Drexel Hill, a residential suburb of Philadelphia, somehow avoiding a network of power lines and buildings as the craft fluttered, hit the street and glided between bushes outside a church, authorities and witnesses said.

The helicopter was reportedly on its way to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Rescue crews were on the scene within minutes. A police superintendent said it was a "miracle" that a pilot managed to down a helicopter in distress without harming the people on board.

⚖️ Kim Kardashian and Floyd Mayweather are sued over 'crypto pump and dump scam'

A New York resident files lawsuit claiming he 'suffered losses' investing in EMAX tokens promoted by stars that plunged 98% in value. The lawsuit, filed in the Los Angeles federal court on January 7, claims the reality star and boxing champion - among others, including former NBA player Paul Pierce - touted tokens sold by EthereumMax, or EMAX, in order to boost its price and make themselves a profit 'at the expense of their followers and investors.'

Figures show the value of the cryptocurrency plummeted by a whopping 98% in July - just weeks after the stars had advertised it to their hundreds of millions of combined followers.

Newer tokens such as Ethereum Max are deemed even riskier since they do not have a 'white paper' guide which informs users about how they operate. Few details are known about their developers. Cryptocurrencies also fall outside most regulations, leaving buyers vulnerable.

🚙 The average new car now costs over $47,000. Don't expect them to get much cheaper anytime soon.

The amount Americans paid for the average new car rose a staggering $6,220 in 2021, and $3,301 in 2020, Kelley Blue Book says. Americans today are paying almost $10,000 more for their new cars than they did in 2019, a year before the pandemic. According to industry insiders, prices may not return to their previous levels for quite a while, if at all.

According to research firm IHS Markit, vehicle production is expected to slowly recover throughout 2022, but semiconductor shortages and other supply-chain challenges will drag on until at least 2023.

💡 The Biden administration announces new measures to upgrade power grids in the US

With its landmark climate legislation in jeopardy, the Biden administration has announced a series of new executive actions to accelerate the US transition to a clean power grid.

Specifically, the administration announced it will move forward with the lease of six commercial areas off the coasts of New York and New Jersey for the installation of wind farms. On offer is over 488,000 acres of ocean seafloor for the winning bidders to build an estimated 5.6-7 gigawatts of clean power generation.

Today’s announcement sees the White House putting forward meaningful climate policy, although much of that will depend on whether the White House can convince Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia to support the approximately $1.75 trillion climate and social spending bill.

🚙 GM is creating an online used car marketplace

The used car market is red hot, and it seems General Motors wants to compete squarely with used vehicle sites like Carvana with a new website called CarBravo. GM is beginning to enroll dealers now to be a part of the site, which is set to launch in “spring 2022,”

CarBravo will not only let shoppers look at inventories from both dealers and GM’s central stock of used vehicles, but it will also let people shop for non-GM used vehicles. That could help it better take on Carvana (which just announced it has sold one million cars) and other sites such as CarMax and Vroom, which let people shop across many different car brands.
