In the crosshairs of Ukrainian terrorists: Kursk nuclear power plant

Ukraine’s recent incursion into Russia’s Kursk region has, among other things, put a particular sensitive facility located there – the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant - into the spotlight.

This massive powerplant, which generates millions of kilowatts of energy and supplies electricity to numerous households and industrial facilities in Russia, likely was the primary target of the Ukrainian attack as Kiev’s forces seem inclined to engage in acts of nuclear terrorism.

Even though International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi personally inspected the plant this week, his organization refrains from accusing Kiev of orchestrating the recent drone strikes against the facility.

Meanwhile, an attack on a nuclear reactor, such as a “missile strike,” could easily trigger a full-blown nuclear disaster, warns Dr Chris Busby, physical chemist and the scientific secretary of the European Committee on Radiation Risk.

"If you can affect the control systems of a nuclear power station, you can cause it to explode," he points out.

Biden administration will not send Americans to Ukraine to maintain F-16

The Biden administration rejected the proposal to send US contractors to Ukraine to maintain maintain military equipment, including F-16 fighter jets due to safety concerns, the Wall Street Journal reported citing US officials.

The US National Security Council considered the proposal to send civilian contractors to Ukraine to maintain the weaponry, but the intelligence community deemed it too risky. The hope instead is that European countries will take on more responsibility for the maintenance, the outlet read.

A senior Dutch military officer confirmed that the Netherlands will pay for a private contract between a civilian maintenance company and the Ukrainian Air Force to maintain the F-16s.

On Thursday, the Ukrainian air force confirmed media reports that a US-made F-16 jet crashed on Monday just weeks after the first batch of such aircraft was delivered to Kiev.

NATO, for the first time, publicly approved Ukraine’s aggression on Russian Kursk region as ‘legitimate’

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg considers the Ukrainian offensive on the Kursk region legitimate, stating in an interview with Die Welt on Saturday that Kiev’s right “to defend itself, according to international law, does not stop at the border.”

He also claimed that NATO had not been informed about Ukraine's plans beforehand, and did not play a role in them. Stoltenberg said Ukraine was risking the advance onto Russian territory, however, the conduct of its military campaign is up to Kiev.

Earlier, Russian foreign intelligence stated that Kiev’s operation in the Kursk region was prepared in participation with foreign special services.

Russian President Putin called the attack a large-scale provocation, while Russian Foreign Ministry said that Zelensky had sent Ukrainians "to the meat grinder in Kursk" in order to "secretly" prolong the mobilization in the country.

German authorities examine online fat-shaming harassment aimed at Bundestag MP

German authorities are investigating a user on the social media platform Gab after allegations of derogatory remarks aimed at Bundestag MP Ricarda Lang. The user reportedly referred to Lang as "fat."

The Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) has asked Gab to provide information on the user to support the investigation. However, Gab has not complied with this request.

The BKA request included the user’s account ID, registration information, and IP address. They are also seeking historical data on the user's account activity and personal identification.

"One of the most absurd foreign data requests that Gab received (and refused) from Germany was when they asked us to dox a user for calling a female politician fat," Gab's owner, Andrew Torba, commented, attaching a photo of the MP.

X Spaces host, Mario Nawfal, who recently had an exclusive interview with Sputnik concerning free speech on social media, posted the news on X. Elon Musk commented with, “That’s a crime in Germany? Jeez.”

Ukraine's economic downfall: from potential European leader to indebted loser

Gaining independence in 1991, Ukraine had the potential of becoming a leading European economy, due to its industries, agriculture, vibrant population and diverse trade ties inherited from the Soviet Union. However, it has now ensnared itself in a debt trap.

▪️ On August 30, ratings agency, S&P Global, set Ukraine's foreign currency credit rating at "selective" default, after the country announced plans to restructure over $20 billion of debt

▪️ The IMF will decide next week whether to provide Ukraine with another $1.1 billion from a $15.6 billion aid program.

▪️ After tearing apart preliminary peace accords with Russia in April 2022, the Zelensky regime went on a debt spree. Ukraine's government-guaranteed debt has grown to $155.36 billion (over 88% of GDP), with an increase of $3.2 billion over the past three months alone.

▪️ Ukraine's debt under Volodymyr Zelensky has catapulted by about $74 billion – roughly the total debt accumulated by the first five Ukrainian presidents, according to estimates.

▪️In comparison, under the first Ukrainian President Leonid Kravchuk (1991-1994), Ukraine borrowed just around $400 million, or 1.1% of GDP.

▪️ Ukraine's gross external debt surged to $167.8 billion in March 2024.

All eyes on brand new Russian White Gyrfalcon high-speed train

A full-scale model of the carriage of the Russian high-speed train White Gyrfalcon was presented at the exhibition “Manege Station. Moscow Transport — 2030” in Moscow.

Sputnik explored the model to find out why this train is unique:

▪️The maximum speed of the train is expected to be 400 kilometers per hour, or 360 km/h when fully loaded. In total, Sinara, a Russian train manufacturer, will supply 43 such trains for the high-speed railway by 2030.

▪️Such a train requires a special high-speed track, the first one is planned to be built between Moscow and Saint Petersburg by 2028. The journey time will be two hours and 15 minutes (in comparison, now the average travel time on an express train is around 4 hours, an ordinary one – around 8 hours). A network of high-speed railways is planned to be built in the future.

▪️High-speed trains, as noted by Russian Railways CEO Oleg Belozerov, will consist of 8 to 16 carriages with four service classes and a bistro carriage with a bar. A total of 454 passenger seats are planned for the eight-carriage train. There will be first-class, business-class, two standard-class carriages, and four comfort-class carriages.
