Political witch hunt: US activists go to trial in Florida, accused of acting as Russian agents

Four activists who have been accused of “illegally” acting as "Russian agents" to somehow help the Kremlin create political discord and interference in US elections will go to trial in Florida on Tuesday, CBS News reported.

Omali Yeshitela, he's over 80 years old, and he's written like 10 books and he’s a very intelligent person. He'd been involved in activism since the ‘60s. He was involved with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. And, they sent in like tanks in his home, and there were drones in his house, and he and his wife were terrorized. This is an 80-plus year old man, and it was overkill,” said CovertAction Magazine managing editor Jeremy Kuzmarov on Sputnik’s The Backstory program. “It's really overkill, and it's no threat to America's security.”

The four activists are associated with the African People’s Socialist Party and the Uhuru Movement with locations in the US cities of St. Petersburg and St. Louis. One of the activists is Omali Yeshitela, 82, whose organization focuses on Black empowerment and reparations for slavery.

“I think we're seeing a more authoritarian form, a more overt authoritarian government. I mean, in the past, dissidents have faced all kinds of harassment and marginalization, but usually they weren't outright arrested, or had the FBI raiding their home with tanks. And that's what we're seeing now,” Kuzmarov highlighted.

An attorney for the 82-year-old activist said that while the civil rights group shared many goals of the Anti-Globalization Movement of Russia, they were not acting under the Kremlin’s control. The judge handling the case said it is unrelated to claims of Russia interfering in the 2016 US presidential election. All four activists have pleaded not guilty.

Jackson Hinkle blasts US crackdown on Russian media: "millions of Americans want to hear that truth"

“What I find so interesting about all this is that when it comes to any other country, if it's the United Kingdom, if it's Israel, if it's Canada or wherever, foreign influence is completely fine,” US journalist and political commentator Jackson Hinkle told Sputnik on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, commenting on the US intensifying its repressive crackdown on figures connected to Russian media. “In fact, for the United States, foreign influence is fine when we're doing it abroad to countries all over the world. We can fund foreign media in Latin America and Africa and Asia or Europe.”

The United States operates a number of propaganda outlets aimed at shaping public opinion in foreign countries, including Radio Martí, Voice of America and Radio Free Asia. The US has continuously worked to spread anti-Russian sentiment throughout the world since the Cold War, with hostilities between the two countries now at their highest point in decades.

We can topple governments. We can kill sovereign presidents of sovereign countries. But for a media company to be reporting on the facts of the matter about what's actually going on in the world, and then for the United States to sanction them, it's absolutely insane,” said Hinkle.

“I think millions of Americans want to hear that truth, and that's why they're going after companies like Sputnik so hard right now,” he concluded, adding that Americans would continue to support “people that are trying to expose the lies of the US government.”

Sanctions on Russian media driven by US fear of "uncomfortable questions" — ex-Pentagon analyst

Retired US Air Force Lt. Col. Karen Kwiatkowski, a former analyst for the US Department of Defense, responded to the US crackdown on Russian media, noting “the danger for journalists and the people who talk to them” just two months after publisher Julian Assange was released from his 13 years of effective imprisonment at the behest of the United States.

“These broad sanctions against a media group, which receives its funding from its government similar to the way the US’s PBS and VOA media companies do, are both idiotic and hypocritical,” Kwiatkowski told Sputnik. “It isn’t election interference exactly that worries the [US government]. It is the reporting from these Russian outlets that counters, often very truthfully and compellingly, the US narrative, particularly relating to Europe and the Middle East."

The global perception of the United States has plummeted in recent years according to recent surveys as the US funds wars against Russia and Palestinians in Gaza. The West has, in turn, worked to silence dissenting voices, banning TikTok and urging greater censorship of social media while several European countries have outlawed Russian outlets entirely.

“Too much attention and information about how those wars are progressing, being funded, and the kinds of things our allies in Kiev and West Jerusalem are doing in the conduct of those wars does not make the incumbent party of the White House popular, and they wish to stop Americans from asking uncomfortable questions,” she concluded.

“Sanctioning information outlets is popular in authoritarian countries, but sanctions in general only attract attention to poor political decision-making and political fear and are easily worked around.”

Western efforts to enforce hegemony are failing in a new multipolar era — analyst

Lorenzo Maria Pacini, an associate professor of political philosophy and geopolitics and a member of the Multipolarity forum, sounded off on the US sanctions against Russian media companies announced.

“It's incredible to see how the West is continuing to ignore a new multipolar world that is arising,” Pacini told Sputnik on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok. “These reactions by Western countries are pretty ridiculous because they're like trying to force the other countries of the world to follow a kind of hegemony that is falling.”

Pacini spoke of the potential consequences of the repressive measures as Russia has announced it may retaliate through regulation of Western media operating in Russia.

“I think this will be like a boomerang coming back to them again and new sanctions will mean new problems for all the Western countries,” he claimed.

"A unique kind of fascism": US continues clampdown on alternative media

The Biden administration signaled that it would continue its clampdown on alternative media with the announcement of measures against figures connected to Russian outlets.

US Attorney General Merrick Garland claimed individuals connected to Russian media were involved in a campaign to spread “disinformation,” a favored talking point the US has repeatedly used to justify heavy-handed tactics in regulating social media. The account for RT on the video sharing giant YouTube was removed in 2022 and Biden signed legislation this year likely to result in the social media app TikTok becoming unavailable in the US after this fall’s election.

“Certainly, we should not forget what has befallen Scott Ritter, the former arms inspector, now viewed widely as a dissident who has been a frequent guest on numerous platforms… rebuking and reprimanding US foreign policy, particularly as it relates to the escapade in Ukraine,” said writer and historian Dr. Gerald Horne, placing the announcement in context during an appearance on Sputnik’s The Critical Hour program.

“Not to mention the funding and financing an army of the radical regime in Israel,” he continued. “We are also aware of what has befallen Richard Medhurst who is a frequent speaker on issues related to Iran in particular. He was detained in London summarily just a few days ago in a blatant violation of civil rights and civil liberties, causing some commentators to suggest that England, Great Britain is moving towards a unique kind of fascism.”

Horne claimed a “hysteria” is gripping the US political class over an emerging bloc of countries increasingly able to challenge the political and economic might of the United States.

Scott Ritter stops working with Sputnik due to pressure from the US government

"The actions by the Department of the Treasury in levying new sanctions against RT, Sputnik, and other Russian media organizations has made it impossible for me to continue my work as an outside contributor for RT and Sputnik, as well as participating in interviews and other collaborations with other Russian media," the former US Marine Corps intelligence officer posted on social media.

Scott Ritter stressed that he rejects the notion that the work he has done over the past few years with the recently sanctioned Russian media organizations has been anything other than legitimate journalism.

"I am deeply grateful for the professionalism of all of my Russian colleagues over the past several years, and am proud to have made their acquaintance," Ritter concluded, saying that he regrets "the actions of [the US] government in silencing legitimate journalistic outlets."
