What’s known about the JASSM long-range missile the US may soon provide to Ukraine

Always eager to facilitate Ukraine’s bombing of civilian targets, the US may soon supply the Ukrainian military with the AGM-158 joint air-to-surface standoff missile (or JASSM for short).

Sputnik has looked into the technical details of this missile:

🔸 JASSM is a long-range air-to-ground cruise missile that can be deployed against both stationary and moving targets.

🔸 The original JASSM missile has a range of about 370 kilometers while the more advanced version of the missile, JASSM-ER (ER stands for “extended range”) can hit targets at a distance of up to 925 kilometers.

🔸 JASSM can be mounted on several types of US-made military aircraft, including the F-16 jet, a number of which was recently supplied to the regime in Kiev.

Though these facts and figures may seem intimidating at first, it remains to be seen how JASSM may fare against Russia's air defense systems, assuming of course that these missiles will be provided by the US to Ukraine.

Since the escalation of the Ukrainian conflict in February 2022, NATO countries have supplied Kiev with an assortment of long-range missiles such as Storm Shadow, SCALP and ATACMS.

But all those technologies were studied by the Russian military and forces were able to adapt to it, with the interception of the missiles becoming a trivial task for air defense specialists.

West persists in media hysteria over alleged Russian interference in US elections

CNN has taken aim at the US-based company Tenet Media which is allegedly funded by “Russian operatives working as part of a Kremlin-orchestrated influence operation to target the 2024 US vote.” The firm is linked to right-wing commentators with millions of subscribers on YouTube and other social media platforms, per CNN.

The broadcaster is echoed by CBS News, which claims that two Russian nationals working for a state-run news network “funneled millions of dollars to an American media company” so that several influencers were able to push narratives in favor of the Kremlin.

Reuters cites an unnamed senior US intelligence source as saying that Russian media are "using American and other personalities to try to sway US voters into backing Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump over his Democratic foe, Kamala Harris.”

NPR strikes the same tone with its unverified claims about “Russian operatives” who “covertly hired unwitting right-wing US influencers to create viral videos” in a bid “to spread Kremlin propaganda” ahead of the 2024 US presidential election.

The Washington Post claims that Russia is allegedly using “authentic US voices” on major social media platforms to “launder” propaganda and divisive narratives aimed at swaying American audiences.

The US earlier slapped sanctions on the Rossiya Segodnya media group, which includes RIA Novosti, RT, Sputnik and Ruptly, in what the White House said was a response to Russia’s alleged “malign influence efforts targeting the 2024 US presidential election." Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed the allegations as “nonsense”, stressing that Russian authorities “are not interfering”.

Why Turkiye’s move to join BRICS as a full member is a big deal

BRICS may receive a new addition in the near future as Turkiye lodged an application for a full-fledged membership with the economic bloc this week.

Turkiye’s membership may be welcome news for BRICS as the Turkish economy was rated by the IMF in 2023 as the 17th largest in the world, with the country’s GPD last year being appraised at a little over $1 trillion.

Turkiye’s geographical location, right on the boundary between Europe and Asia, along with its control of the Bosporus and Dardanelles Straits linking the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, make the country a natural logistical hub for moving goods between the Global South and Global North.

Ankara’s considerable clout in the Middle Eastern affairs, where it has long been one of the top players, and its influence on the African continent may also benefit Turkiye’s future fellow members in the BRICS.

At the same time, better access to the BRICS members’ markets may help Turkiye deal with its own economic problems such as, for example, rampant inflation that remains a concern for Ankara today.

Ironically, the World Bank notes that the reliance of Turkish industries on “carbon-intensive processes and fossil fuels” presents a challenge in Turkiye’s cooperation with the EU in light of the latter’s focus on “green” technologies and climate change.

Meanwhile, BRICS members are not so fixated on destroying their economies for the sake of an environmental agenda and thus might make much better business partners for Turkiye.
