US’ botched Afghan exit exposes Biden's ‘callous foreign policy’, GOP report reveals

Washington disregarded the security of US personnel on the ground, while prioritizing the “optics of withdrawal” during the messy Afghanistan exodus, according to a 350-page investigative report released by Republican Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Mike McCaul. The document holds President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris accountable for the botched pullout.

According to the report:

🔸 Biden’s calls to withdraw the US from the Vietnam War as a senator in the 1970s along with the Afghanistan pullout shows a "pattern of callous foreign policy positions and readiness to abandon strategic partners."

🔸 The State Department received numerous warning signs about the inevitable collapse of the Afghan government but failed to hammer out an escape plan to “safely evacuate US personnel, American citizens, green card holders, and our [Washington’s] brave Afghan allies.”

🔸 The Biden administration’s mismanagement resulted in “exposing US Defense Department and State Department personnel to lethal threats and emotional harm.”

🔸 Former US envoy to Afghanistan, Ross Wilson, who reportedly had COVID-19 at the time, fled the US embassy ahead of his entire staff. Wilson got a foreign service officer to take his test for him so that he could quickly flee Afghanistan.

🔸 The White House “misled and, in some instances, directly lied to the American people at every stage of the withdrawal, from before the go-to-zero order until today.”

The United States hastily withdrew from Afghanistan in August 2021 after a rapid takeover of the country by the Taliban*.

❗️Sweden's largest international airport, Stockholm-Arlanda, temporarily suspended flights overnight after drones were spotted nearby.

Earlier, four drones were detected approaching Arlanda Airport.

Single-handedly wipe out an IFV? A Russian soldier with a gas canister can!

A Russian soldier in the Kursk region destroyed a Ukrainian infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) using a gasoline canister. Soldiers from the 44th Army Corps, who provided the footage, told Sputnik that following the strike on the IFV, Ukrainian forces withdrew. It was at this point that the Russian soldier chose to completely torch the vehicle.

Israel's strikes on Syria: what's known so far

Tehran “strongly condemns the criminal attack by the Zionist regime on Syrian soil,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanani told reporters, urging Israel’s backers to “stop supporting and arming it.”

▪️Kanani spoke after at least 14 people were killed and 43 more injured in Israeli air strikes on central Syria on September 8, according to the Syrian state news agency SANA.

▪️Israeli warplanes flying over north-western Lebanon launched missiles at “a number of military sites in the central region” of Syria at about 23:20 local time (20:20 GMT) on Sunday, a Syrian military source told SANA.

▪️“Our air defense systems confronted the missiles and shot down some of them,” the source said, calling the strikes “an air aggression by the Israeli enemy.”

▪️The attack sparked a fire and caused material damage near the city of Masyaf in the Hama province, SANA reported.

▪️The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a UK-based group, has meanwhile claimed that “13 violent explosions rang out in the zone housing scientific research centers in Masyaf where pro-Iranian groups and weapons development experts are present”. The SOHR is run by a single person and has repeatedly been accused by Syrian war analysts of false reporting.

▪️There was no immediate comment on the strike from Israel, which typically refrains from commenting on its attacks on Syria that have been intermittent for years.

Damascus repeatedly accused the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) of carrying out multiple strikes on the Syrian territory. The IDF has taken responsibility only for a small part of those attacks. According to the Jewish state, the IDF has been targeting Iranian and pro-Iranian troops allegedly deployed on Syria's soil – an allegation that Tehran dismisses.
