‘Literally playing with fire’: World reacts to Putin’s warning on NATO long-range missiles for Ukraine Reactions have poured in to President Putin’s stark warning Thursday that a decision by NATO countries to greenlight the Kiev regime’s use of Western long…
Putin’s warning: West’s threats to untie Kiev’s hands for long-range strikes signals loss of control

The Zelensky regime’s sponsors “have already heard” President Putin’s warning about the risks of a direct Russia-NATO war if the West greenlights the use of its long-range missiles to attack Russia, and have already started “reversing course” on their bellicose antics, political and military analyst Sergey Poletaev told Sputnik, pointing to PM Keir Starmer’s comments that he and President Biden wouldn’t make an announcement on the missile issue.

The noise surrounding the lifting of restrictions signifies a realization by both Kiev and its sponsors “that Ukraine is losing,” the observer said, noting that Russia’s strategy of exhausting Ukraine’s military is “paying off,” with the front collapsing in the vicinity of Pokrovsk, in the Donbass in general and in the Kursk Region.

“All of this is evidence that our strategy is beginning to bear fruit. Consequently, the West’s task is to ‘break’ this game. They can’t do so by military means, by force alone, because Ukraine doesn’t have enough strength, and the West itself doesn’t want to fight. Therefore, if it is possible to reverse course using high-precision missile strikes, they will try to do so,” Poletaev said.

The Russian president, educated as a lawyer, consistently, throughout his political career, has worked painstakingly to provide a legal basis for all of his decisions, the observer noted.

Poletaev concurred with Putin’s argument about NATO’s role in intelligence and targeting, saying the Ukrainian planes that would be tasked with launching missiles in Russia’s direction would simply fire them, with “all the preparation, all the reconnaissance – where to fire, in what volume, using what means, and technical issues – all of this is done by Western military specialists,” with the Ukrainian pilots simply “taking off, going to the launch point, and pressing a button.”

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova spoke to Sputnik about US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's call to treat RT's journalism as espionage.

"I think a new profession should appear in the US – a specialist in sanctions imposed against Russia,” Zakharova said. “Someone should at least make sure that sanctions are not repeated. Otherwise, they have already started a second round with RT. 'And again the gray night,' as they say."

Earlier on Friday, Blinken accused RT of having “cyber capabilities” and running "covert operations" to interfere in other countries’ affairs – and even their "military procurement."

He said the US is imposing sanctions against three structures and two people in connection with the accusations against RT.

Blinken said the US, UK and Canada are launching a "diplomatic campaign" against RT, calling for treating the news channel’s work as espionage.

The new sanctions as part of the measures against RT will be "the strictest possible" and will have a "completely blocking" effect, the State Department added.

Margarita Simonyan responded to new US sanctions against RT, saying she hasn’t lived in vain.

The US State department complained that “one of the reasons Ukraine doesn’t have as much support in other countries is because of RT,” said the editor-in-chief of Rossiya Segodnya, Sputnik's parent media group. "I haven’t lived in vain. Seriously."

Earlier, James Rubin, director of the State Department's Global Engagement Center, said that "one of the reasons why so much of the world has not been as fully supportive of Ukraine as you would think they would be given that Russia's invaded Ukraine and violated rule number one of the international system is because of the broad scope and reach of RT, where propaganda, disinformation, and lies are spread to millions if not billions of people around the world."

'We do not have freedom of speech in that area at all' – former Defense Department analyst

Retired US Air Force Lieutenant Colonel and ex-US Defense Department analyst Karen Kwiatkowski spoke with Sputnik about the new sanctions against Russian media outlets announced today by Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

“It definitely connects with the elections because the Democratic Party, which is the party in power right now – and they hope to retain power – they are hoping to make a greater enemy of Russia… so that they can point the finger at their opponent, which is Donald Trump, and say that Russia wants him,” said the analyst.

“They are creating news and media coverage of something that very much fits into their narrative, which is an anti-Russian narrative which is related to the campaign,” Kwiatkowski added.

The Biden administration also opposes RT as a hub of critique for his neoconservative worldview, the analyst highlighted, warning that Americans are losing their free speech to effectively criticize US foreign policy.

We are not allowed to speak freely about American foreign policy,” she said. “We see it in terms of the demonstrations across the country in support of Gaza, trying to end that genocide. We are not allowed in this country to criticize the American neoconservative foreign policy. That is a done deal. We do not have freedom of speech in that area at all.”

US ‘reluctance’ to greenlight Ukrainian long-range strikes tied to awareness of Russia’s inevitable ‘response’

Russia’s proven ability to respond to NATO provocations in Ukraine “is a key reason why Washington is right now reluctant to agree to other longer-range weapons being used to further target inside Russia,” former British MP and UK Defense Academy senior research fellow Matthew Gordon-Banks told Sputnik, commenting on President Putin’s warning about Russia and NATO entering a technical state of war if the US and its allies lifted restrictions on the use of Western long-range missiles for strikes deep into Russia.

“NATO is already involved in the conflict in Ukraine and has been for a long time. It has supplied weaponry and equipment, trained Ukrainian personnel and largely pulled the trigger on missiles beyond the capability of the Ukrainian military,” Gordon-Banks said.

Pointing to the recent Russian missile strike on a Ukrainian army and mercenary training base in Poltava in response to increasingly aggressive Ukrainian attacks on Russia, Gordon-Banks cited the former as clear evidence, seen by Kiev’s NATO curators, that Russia is ready and, more importantly able, to respond.

“These Russian missiles evaded US Patriot defense systems and three further European air defense systems. It is also believed that most, if not all, of the Swedish Saab defense and aviation advisors were killed, following which the Swedish foreign minister resigned his post,” the observer said.

Therefore, “whilst the Western media and key opinion-formers like to say that Russian warnings by President Putin are a ‘bluff’, the reality is that Washington knows perfectly well what could happen, and the Poltava area attacks, [plus the downing] of an F-16 and its pilot are a measured response to the recent escalation,” Gordon-Banks emphasized.

Margarita Simonyan recalled the powerful words of former US President John F. Kennedy as the US announced new punitive measures against Russian media companies

“We are not afraid to entrust the American people with unpleasant facts, foreign ideas, alien philosophies, and competitive values. For a nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people,” said the editor-in-chief of Rossiya Segodnya, Sputnik's parent media group, quoting the slain politician.

“They haven’t killed him for nothing. He was thinking the wrong way,” said Simonyan, commenting on the latest move towards censorship of Russian media companies.

UK pledges another $700+ mln to Ukraine, while leaving 10m British pensioners to freeze

Britons are growing discontent with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer as he focuses on Ukraine while imposing austerity at home.

◻️ Earlier this week the Labour government abolished £1.5 billion ($1.9 billion) in winter fuel payments for 10 million pensioners in England and Wales. Starmer faced a backbench rebellion, with more than 50 of Labour's 404 MPs not voting for the measure.

◻️ A 2017 analysis by Labour claimed that scrapping winter fuel payment could "kill" as many as 4,000 pensioners. British charity Age UK said a whopping 2 million elderly Britons could be affected by Starmer's cuts.

◻️ A Conservative motion "regretting" the withdrawal of fuel allowance for pensioners was later passed in the House of Lords, dealing another blow to the Starmer government. The revelation that Downing Street had not even carried out an impact assessment on scrapping winter fuel support was called "absolutely unthinkable" by opposition parties.

◻️ Number 10 cannot guarantee other pensioners' benefits, including council tax discounts. Starmer claimed the constraints were caused by a £22 billion ($29 billion) "black hole" in government finances left by the previous Tory government.

◻️ In July the government revealed that the UK has pledged £12.5 billion ($16 billion) in support to Ukraine since February 2022, including £3 billion ($4 billion) for military assistance in 2024/25.

◻️ Meanwhile, the Office for National Statistics reports that the UK’s economic growth has almost stalled. Despite inflation falling to 2.2%, consumer prices continue to rise. The international Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development said the UK "faces a challenging economic environment."

◻️ A new Ipsos poll indicates that 46% of British respondents see Starmer unfavorably. Nonetheless, Foreign Secretary David Lammy stated on September 11 the UK would provide another $782 million in aid to Ukraine.

US crackdown on Russian media reveals fear, insecurity of dying empire – ex-CIA analyst

“Freedom of speech in America is under assault,” former US State Department official and retired CIA intelligence officer Larry Johnson told Sputnik, commenting on the new sanctions against Russian media announced by Secretary of State Antony Blinken. “I'm waiting to see if they're going to come down and sanction me, for example, for daring to appear on RT and offer commentary.”

“This really is divorced from reality,” he continued, questioning the influence of the Russian-sponsored television network which ceased operations in the United States in 2022. Other analysts have suggested the move is intended to ramp up Russiagate hysteria leading up to November’s election.

“Never during the height of the Cold War did the United States ever take such drastic measures with respect to entities like Pravda and Tass,” Johnson claimed, referring to the two famous news outlets that operated from the Soviet Union. “Back then the United States had enough confidence in its own power of personal freedom that they didn't have to worry about [that], they weren't so insecure. What this reflects is just… one more symptom of a dying empire where they have to go out and attack others.”

The only thing that can kill free speech is this kind of persecution. It's irrational. And again, I think it's a symptom of a weakness on the part of the United States. Weakness and fear. That's where this originates… the United States is acknowledging that what it can't handle is the truth.

Finland, Sweden allow Ukraine to use their weapons to strike Russia - reports

The weapons supplied to Ukraine by Sweden and Finland have no restrictions on the area of their use, Finnish broadcasting media reported, citing Finnish and Swedish foreign ministers Elina Valtonen and Maria Malmer Stenergard.

"The only restriction is that the weapons must be used within the framework of international law," the media quoted Valtonen as saying.

According to the TV channel, the new Swedish top diplomat, Stenergard, did not limit the area of use of the weapons to the territory of Ukraine. The broadcaster said the weapons can also be used for strikes on Russian territory.

Stenergard was appointed new Swedish foreign minister on September 10.

Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier said that NATO countries are currently discussing not only Kiev's possible use of Western long-range weapons, but are essentially deciding whether to directly engage in the Ukrainian conflict. Direct participation of Western countries in the Ukrainian conflict will change its essence; Russia will be forced to make decisions based on the threats thus created for it, he added.

Starmer announces no new developments following talks with Biden

Speaking to members of the press, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he had a "wide-ranging discussion" with US President Joe Biden on strategies concerning Ukraine, the Middle East, and the Pacific region.

“This wasn't a meeting about a particular capability,” Starmer told reporters.

The British Prime Minister described his talks with Biden as "lengthy and productive" but refrained from sharing details about any decisions reached relating to Ukraine's possible use of Western weapons to strike deep within Russian territory.

Previously, the White House likewise did not reveal any decision by the US President to authorize long-range strikes by the Ukrainian Armed Forces into Russian territory in a separate statement released after the meeting.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has cautioned NATO members to be cognizant of the consequences of permitting Kiev to target locations deep inside Russia using missile systems supplied by the West.

US at mercy of neoconservative ‘death wish’ amid dearth of responsible leadership

“People have felt more tangibly the… burning flames of thermonuclear war and have a more clear realization of the threat looming over them if the arms race is not stopped,” wrote Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev in a famous missive to US President John F Kennedy in the days after the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The continued existence of humanity was secured through the cooperation of those two remarkable leaders, notes professor of history and director of the Nuclear Studies Institute at American University Peter Kuznick. But the academic questions whether the current US president would perform similarly in such a scenario.

“It looks like we have a collective death wish for the human species right now,” Kuznick lamented. “It's, to me, horrifying. The world rests in the hands, in many senses, of Biden, who's really not all there and has very hawkish instincts. He's an old cold warrior and initially denies every new weapon system that the Ukrainians ask for but then caves into the pressure.”

“And it looks like he's already caved into the pressure again on using the ATACMS missiles to strike deep inside of Russia.”

“The fact that the Democrats are so happy to embrace Dick Cheney of all people – they have turned into the new neocons!” Kuznick claimed, referring to the former Republican Vice President’s recent endorsement of Kamala Harris. “When it comes to foreign policy, they may even be more hawkish… So we don't have any adults in the room right now. There's no Jack Kennedy.”

Russian Forces find map of US base in captured Ukrainian Bradley - Sputnik reporter

Russian soldiers have discovered a map of the US military base at Fort Irwin, which the US military forgot in one of its Bradley fighting vehicles that it transferred to Ukraine that was later captured in the Kupyansk area, a Sputnik correspondent reported.

Fort Irwin is one of the largest military training centers in the United States located in the Mojave desert in California, where soldiers train to operate armored vehicles as part of brigades.

Since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, the United States has supplied Kiev with more than 300 Bradley vehicles. A significant number of them have been destroyed by the Russian forces on the battlefield in Ukraine.

The Kremlin has consistently warned against continued arms deliveries to Kiev, saying it would lead to further escalation of the conflict. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that any cargo containing weapons for Ukraine would become a legitimate target for Russia.
