😳 The challenges of live reporting are endless and journalists have to be ready for every possibility…
One such example of these perils is the story of a reporter from the US, who was hit by a car live on air. However, what left everyone stunned was the fact that she continued reporting.

🎮 Microsoft's biggest antitrust test in Europe for its $68.7 billion deal is whether it yanks games from PlayStation
Antitrust regulators at the European Commission are likely to dig their heels in on Microsoft's record-breaking $68.7 billion acquisition of video-game publisher Activision Blizzard. The deal will, according to the announcement, make Microsoft third-biggest in gaming by total revenue, behind Sony and Tencent. Sony's market value plummeted by $20 billion on Wednesday after the news of the deal broke.
How much attention the EU pays to Microsoft may come down to how much it vertically integrates Activision Blizzard into its existing console, mobile, PC, and cloud ecosystems. Activision Blizzard's latest earnings report recorded 390 million monthly active users for the third quarter of 2021.

🏙 New York City Mayor Eric Adams says his first paycheck on Friday will be converted to bitcoin and ether via Coinbase
Adams has been vocal about wanting to transform New York into a bitcoin hub to compete with Miami. The extra step of converting is due to a labor regulation that does not allow New York City to pay its employees in crypto.
"New York is the center of the world, and we want it to be the center of cryptocurrency and other financial innovations," the mayor said in a statement.

✈ Why airlines and telecoms are fighting over the 5G rollout?
Today, as carriers expand their 5G networks across the country, they are faced with an equally dangerous prospect: that one of 5G’s spectrum bands may interfere with the radio altimeters aboard commercial aircraft below 2,500 feet, potentially causing their automated landing controls to misjudge the distance from the ground and crash.
Airlines had canceled more than 320 flights by Wednesday evening, or a little over 2% of the U.S. total, according to FlightAware.
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency said it wasn’t aware of any problems on the continent caused by 5G interference. To mitigate airline interference, French telecom providers reduce the strength of their high-speed networks near airports.
Some experts say poor coordination and cooperation among federal agencies is as much to blame as any technical issues. In the meantime, airlines scrambled to adjust to the new reality.

👔 Amazon heads to the mall with prototype clothing store
The online retailing giant said Thursday that it plans to open a clothing store in a Southern California mall later this year. It’s the latest foray into brick-and-mortar for Amazon, which already sells more than 10% of all clothes in the US.
The store, which will sell women’s and men’s clothing as well as shoes and other accessories, will open at Americana at Brand, a mall in Glendale, California. The entry into malls could become another threat to traditional clothing sellers because of the data and shopper insights Amazon may gain, experts say.
Amazon says its algorithms will spit out real-time recommendations as shoppers keep scanning items that they see. Shoppers can also fill out an online survey of their preferences for style and fit.

🏅 ESPN Won’t Send Its Crew to Beijing Olympics
Due to COVID-19 concerns and coronavirus-related restrictions, ESPN will not send its news personnel to the Winter Olympics next month in Beijing. The news comes a day after rightsholder NBC said it will keep most of its announcing teams in the US during the games, which are set to run February 4-20.
NBC, with its rights deal, will have by far the largest contingent of US media on the ground in Beijing.
Beijing organizers have been trying to keep up with the shifting demands of putting on an Olympics during a global pandemic. Last week, officials said they would not sell tickets to attend events in-person, instead selecting “groups of spectators,” with few other details provided.
