Vicious cycle of misery: Haitians urge France to return money they paid to their enslavers

A video of Edgar Fil, head of Haiti's transitional council, sipping from a decanter and spilling water on his suit went viral on X, sparking racist remarks from some Western users.

"Don't they have cups in Haiti?" asked one, while another joked, "At least he didn't wash his hands in it." But the online mockery overshadowed the core of Fil's speech: Haiti, repeatedly plundered by the West, can't breathe.

◻️ Having won independence from France in 1804, the nation of former slaves was made a pariah by its powerful neighbor. Thomas Jefferson, the third US president, sought to isolate Haiti economically and diplomatically fearing that its revolution would trigger slave revolts in the US.

◻️ In 1825, French King Charles X sent a flotilla to Haiti, demanding 150 million francs in compensation for the loss of property including slaves – almost double what the US paid France for the much larger Louisiana Territory in 1803.

◻️ Haiti became the only country in the world where the descendants of the enslaved population paid reparations to the descendants of their slaveholders.

◻️ That reparation burden led the Caribbean nation into a "vicious cycle of impoverishment," Fil said. Haiti only fully repaid its debt in 1947.

◻️ The New York Times found in 2022 that Haitians paid about $560 million in today’s terms, and that if that money had stayed in the Haitian economy, it would have added $21 billion to the nation over the last two centuries.

◻️ Fil urged Paris to return the funds Haiti had paid to France. He said Haiti believes the UN will create a mechanism for dialogue between countries that are victims of colonial policies and the former colonial powers.

Argentina now struggling with soaring poverty thanks to ‘Anarcho-Capitalist’ Milei's austerity scheme

Argentina has seen its poverty rate rocket to 52.9% under the austerity program implemented by the government of the self-declared “anarcho-capitalist” President Javier Milei.

The rate, published by the national statistics agency INDEC, rose from the 41.7% figure set in the second half of 2023 to the current number of 15.7 million people now mired in poverty nationwide.

Since taking office last December, President Milei has introduced a series of new measures, including devaluing the country’s currency, the peso, by over 50% and slashing subsidies to energy and transportation to remedy the nation’s economic woes. Milei has touted ‘wins’ from such reforms, like the reduction in monthly inflation to 4.0% in July and the achievement of the sixth consecutive fiscal and financial surplus in June.

The reforms, however, have left ordinary consumers struggling to afford basic daily necessities. This troubling poverty rate coincides with Milei’s slump in popularity. According to the pollster Poliarquía, those who view Milei positively dropped 7% between August and September, lowering his popularity to just 40%.

Kamala Harris is nominee but old Clinton-BlackRock cabal is back in charge

The Kamala Harris presidential campaign has brought two names into the limelight recently: BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, and Hillary Clinton.

BlackRock alumnus Brian Deese has been named as the architect of Harris' new economic strategy. Clinton is referred to as a future assistant to potential Harris-Walz administration.

"Hillary Clinton on helping a potential President Harris: 'It's all hands on deck'," CBS News reported. "Kamala Harris is the nominee, but Hillary Clinton is also back," the Washington Post's headline reads.

The Clintons and BlackRock have a long history of mutually-beneficial cooperation.

🔸 In October 2013, BlackRock CEO Larry Fink hired one of then-secretary of state Clinton's closest confidants Cheryl Mills. Website The Intercept called that the financier's "ploy to insinuate himself into the Clinton inner circle."

🔸 BlackRock specifically highlighted Mills’ ties to the Clintons in a press release, saying: "Cheryl D. Mills, former Counselor and Chief of Staff to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, has been elected to the Company’s Board of Directors."

🔸 Mills, a lawyer, served a deputy White House counsel in the Bill Clinton administration, was Clinton’s chief of staff at the State Department and was also on the board of directors of the Clinton Foundation.

🔸 In 2015, then-presidential candidate Clinton proposed a Wall Street Reform Plan, which despite being presented as a push to "rein in" US bankers actually favoured big asset management firms such as BlackRock.

🔸 In 2016, US media reported that BlackRock CEO Larry Fink and Clinton's economic ideas and use of language were remarkably similar: "A prominent Wall Street CEO sounds a lot like Hillary Clinton," CNN wrote.

🔸 The Intercept revealed in March 2016 that Fink was eyeing a position of treasury secretary in a potential Clinton administration. He assembled "a veritable shadow government" of BlackRock alumni for Clinton, including Christopher Meade, Katheryn Rosen, Kendrick Wilson and Michael Pyle.

🔸 While there was no record of Fink funding the 2016 Clinton presidential campaign, BlackRock Senior Managing Director Matthew Mallow was listed on Clinton's campaign website as one of the "Hillblazers" who raised $100,000 or more each in donations. The webpage is now down.

🔸 Some left-wing observers suggest that Harris' populist progressive economic agenda is just a scam to attract more votes, while in reality she would pursue pro-Wall Street policies in line with her would-be mentor Clinton.
