“Israel might be able to… show off its operations that don't have significant strategical value and are mostly for the public opinion... But, that doesn't scare the Iranians” - Iran-based journalist
On Tuesday, Iran launched several hundred ballistic missiles toward Israel in response to the killings of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, Hamas Politburo chief Ismail Haniyeh, and senior IRGC commander Abbas Nilforoushan.
President Pezeshkian accused the US of their complicity in the assassination of Hezbollah Secretary-General Hasan Nasrallah who died in an Israeli airstrike on Beirut, media reported.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is now seeking to expand his war in Gaza by invading southern Lebanon. Iran has fired about 400 ballistic missiles into southern and central Israel. At least two people were wounded by shrapnel in Tel Aviv following Iran’s missile strike, Sputnik reported, citing Israeli medics.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said in a statement that if Israel responds to the attack, it would be followed by more destructive strikes.

“Iran doesn't rely on this strategy that people like to talk about with very particular rhetoric calling Iranian allies as proxies. Iran doesn't rely on that. Iran fights its own wars. Iran retaliates for the murder of its own generals itself,” Ehsan Safarnejad, an Iranian-based journalist who joined Sputnik’s Fault Lines. “...but there is always that sense of camaraderie and brotherhood between Iranians and particularly people in Lebanon. We are very much close to them.”

“I can say for certain that the US’ aggression to both [Iran and Russia] has driven them very, very close to one another. To the point that I would say that Iran and Russia are now on the verge of becoming strategic partners,” Safarnejad added.

US reportedly green-lit Israel's attack on Lebanon
The US government allegedly green-lit Israel’s military attack on Lebanon, The New Republic wrote. US officials reportedly told Israel that the US would support their decision to bomb Hezbollah targets, even with Biden urging a cease-fire.
However, when asked on Monday if he was comfortable with Israel’s ground invasion of Lebanon, Biden said, “I am comfortable with them stopping. We should have a cease-fire now.”

“[Biden is] talking as if he's a spectator of this. He's not a spectator. He's giving all the weapons. The Israelis say it time and time again. They've said that we could not do this without the weapons you give us. So this is an American project,” Dr. Jim Kavanagh, an independent journalist who joined The Critical Hour said.

Iran’s attack on Israel shows peril of mistaking country’s restraint for weakness
A number of international affairs analysts joined Sputnik to comment on Iran’s retaliatory strike against Israel, noting the country has demonstrated substantial military power after practicing restraint for an extended period.
Iran said it deployed its hypersonic Fatteh-2 missile during Tuesday’s attack, which is able to maneuver at a speed of about 10,000 miles per hour (over 16,000 kilometers per hour). Analysts claim the United States would also struggle to frequently replenish Israel’s Iron Dome during a prolonged conflict.

A number of international affairs analysts joined Sputnik to comment on Iran’s retaliatory strike against Israel, noting the country has demonstrated substantial military power after practicing restraint for an extended period.
💬 “It does seem that if people are going to mistake that measured response for weakness, they're going to regret it,” said journalist Robert Fantina. “Iran is waiting and watching, and it's playing the long game. It's not necessarily looking for an immediate victory, but it does want to see progress in peace in the region, and that means the defeat of Israel.”
💬 “That previous attack was just almost like a showpiece to let Israel know that, ‘not only can we hit you, but we can hit you hard. Our missiles can get through your many layers of defense even with all of your protectors in NATO and in the US, basically shooting down most of those key projectiles for you; our main missiles hit their targets and hit them precisely and hard,’” said author and independent journalist Esther Iverem, summarizing Tehran’s perspective.

China marks 75 years since inception, as it stuns world with 'economic miracle'
The People's Republic of China (PRC) commemorates the 75th anniversary of its founding on October 1.
Over the past decades, China has morphed from an agrarian country into a technological and global economic powerhouse.
What's behind China's economic miracle?
🔸 World's factory: In the late 1970s, Chairman Deng Xiaoping launched the country's transformation into "the world's factory" building upon Mao-era achievements. He set up "special economic zones" along China's southeastern coast, drawing foreign companies, technologies and investment to China;
🔸 Massive boom: From 1978 to 2017, China's economy expanded at an average annual rate of 9.5%, increasing roughly 35-fold, thereby lifting nearly 800 million people out of poverty; the largest reduction in inequality in modern history.
🔸 Re-unification: Merging with Hong Kong in 1997 helped China expand the flow of foreign direct investments (FDI). In 2023, FDI to Hong Kong reached around $112.68 billion;
🔸 WTO: China’s entry into the World Trade Organization in December 2001 boosted its economic development. From 2002 to 2006, the Chinese economy soared by an estimated 49%. Remarkably, the global meltdown of 2007-2009 failed to impede China’s boom. From 2007 to 2011, the economy expanded by a whopping 43%.
According to the Chinese National Statistics Bureau, its economy grew by 5.2% in 2023 compared to the previous year, reflecting a slowdown relative to the rapid expansion seen in earlier decades. Still, China's GDP in purchasing power parity (PPP) for 2023 hit $34.6 trillion, beating the US's $27.3 trillion, according to the World Bank.

‘Suicidal venture’: what are consequences of US economic, military attacks on Russia?
Amid ongoing Western support for Ukraine, Russia has now announced it could ban certain vital exports to Western countries, threatening serious economic consequences for the US and other NATO members. Author and independent journalist Caleb Maupin joined Sputnik’s The Critical Hour program to discuss the development, noting that – despite the United States’ bluster – the West would likely prove to be far more vulnerable to sanctions than Moscow.
Maupin noted that other countries have adapted to Western sanctions, increasingly strengthening the construction of a counterhegemonic bloc against US economic and military might. Meanwhile Western economies have become highly dependent on imports in the age of neoliberalism.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned this week the West would face significant consequences if it intensified attacks on Russia, saying attempts to impose a “strategic defeat” on Moscow would represent a “suicidal venture.”

Author and independent journalist Caleb Maupin joined Sputnik’s The Critical Hour program to discuss the development, noting that – despite the United States’ bluster – the West would likely prove to be far more vulnerable to sanctions than Moscow.
“Nowadays Russia and China are very well integrated into the Western economic system,” Maupin noted. “There's still areas where Western European countries are reliant on Russia for certain metals and other things. And there are certainly still cards to be played [by Russia] because that's how intertwined our economies are, and that is a motivation to not have an all out war, right?”
“This Ukrainian scenario for what they call victory is not a realistic situation,” said Maupin. “And how many lives are going to be thrown away? … The people of these regions have voted. They voted back in 2014 to break away. They recently voted to join with the Russian Federation.”

What new NATO head Mark Rutte is infamous for?
Former Dutch PM Mark Rutte took up the mantle of NATO Secretary-General from Jens Stoltenberg. Through his career, Rutte earned the reputation of “Teflon Mark”, as nothing sticks to his reputation, and “Mr. No”, as he was willing to sacrifice the European coronavirus rescue package for political gains.
At the end of 2020, a scandal erupted in the Netherlands when it was revealed that almost 10,000 parents were wrongly accused of abuse, and forced to return their additional childcare payment. Rutte recognized the cabinet's guilt for the situation, and in January 2021, his entire government had to resign.
Mark Rutte met Volodymyr Zelensky soon after his victory in the 2019 election. He described Zelensky as “a man with a mission” and said he was “convinced that Ukraine’s success largely depends on the mentality he conveyed from the very beginning.”
After the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, the Netherlands had a lockdown in effect for several months. In June 2021, the authorities lifted most of the restrictions; after which, the incidence of the disease in the country rose sharply. Rutte apologized for the government's "miscalculation."
In 2022, Rutte was caught up in a scandal for deleting text messages, accumulated over several years, from his cell phone. Rutte was accused of violating the law on data archiving. Opposition members also said the use of an old Nokia 301 model could have jeopardized state security.
Rutte was also one of the first Western leaders to visit Ukraine to back the Zelensky regime after Russia launched its special military operation. After Rutte’s appointment, the South China Morning Post described him as “a fierce critic of Russian President Putin and a staunch ally of Ukraine, who has been one of the driving forces behind Europe’s military support for Ukraine.”
NATO’s hostile stance towards Russia is unlikely to change with a new secretary-general,” Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said earlier, adding that NATO states "are working to strategically suppress Russia. At the moment, it is an alliance that is hostile to [Russia]."

US role as peacemaker pushed the Mideast to the brink – Russian Foreign Ministry

"If in the last months, or year, all the i's had been dotted when some named the opponents of others, and the US had said they would oppose a certain side or state, that they would not take on the role of a mediator but be engaged in a forceful solution - that would have been one conversation. However, they came with the role of a peacemaker. And this role of a peacemaker has once again pushed this region to the brink," Zakharova told Sputnik.

Weakening Iran and Hezbollah part of broader Israeli-US project - analyst
Commenting on Israel’s recently announced start of its “limited raids” in southern Lebanon, Dr Lorenzo Trombetta, Rome-based senior analyst and UN consultant on the Middle East, told Sputnik that those attacks are just preparatory measures before a broader military offensive on the ground.
The White House National Security Council earlier said that President Joe Biden had directed the US military to help Israel shoot down Iranian missiles targeting the Jewish state.
The Israeli military has meanwhile resumed air strikes on Hezbollah in Lebanon, hours after Iran launched a massive missile attack on Israel in response to its “aggressive acts” against Tehran’s allies, including the assassination of Hezbollah leader, Hassan Nasrallah.

“In this sense, Israel is serving US purposes. That's why all the Israeli operations on the ground are influencing the balance of power in Lebanon, and trying to change the equation of power there. Weakening not only Iran, but Hezbollah mainly, is part of the broader Israeli-US project,” Trombetta pointed out.
The White House National Security Council earlier said that President Joe Biden had directed the US military to help Israel shoot down Iranian missiles targeting the Jewish state.
“The US military presence increased in the Middle East, mainly towards Iran, in order to threaten it and send a clear message to Tehran and its allies,” the analyst said. He suggested that the US won’t change their Middle Eastern policy and will continue “to manage the balance of power from their side, by being on the backseat and clearly supporting Israel and their other allies.”
