Iran berates US and UK over aggression against Yemen, blames Israel for inflaming regional instability

Iran “strongly condemns the US and British military attacks on parts of Sanaa, Hodeidah and other regions of Yemen,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei wrote in a social media post Saturday night in the wake of attacks on Yemen by the US-led coalition October 4.

“Repeated military aggression by the United States and Britain against Yemen constitutes a blatant infringement of the United Nations Charter and the fundamental principles of international law. The attacking parties bear international accountability for such unlawful acts,” Baghaei wrote.

Baghaei cited the actions of Yemenis and “other Islamic nations in the region” in response to Israeli actions a “natural reaction to the killing of their Palestinian and Lebanese brothers and sisters,” and emphasized that the military operations by the US and its allies against Yemen “will have no effect on their determination to defend the people of Palestine and Lebanon.”

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman went on to blast Israel over its ongoing military campaigns in Gaza and Lebanon, suggesting that “the continuation of the occupation, war-mongering and expansionism of the Zionist regime is the main reason for the continued insecurity and instability in the region,” and that an end of attacks on Lebanon and the “genocide in Gaza” were the preconditions “for restoring peace and stability in the region.”

The beginning of the school year has been postponed in Lebanon until November 4 amid continuing Israeli attacks, Lebanon's Education Minister Abbas Halabi said on Sunday.

"Studies in public schools, colleges and specialized schools will begin on November 4," Halabi was quoted by Lebanese TV broadcaster Al Jadeed as saying.

On Saturday night, a Sputnik correspondent reported that the Israeli air force aircraft launched a new series of strikes on Beirut's southern suburbs. More than three strikes were carried out on the highway from the city center to the airport. Several explosions occurred about two kilometers (1.3 miles) from Beirut International Airport. The previous strikes were carried out on the Choueifat and Bourj el-Barajneh municipalities.

Israel started a ground operation against the Hezbollah movement in the south of Lebanon on Monday, while the mutual exchange of air and rocket strikes continues. Lebanon's caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati said on Wednesday that about 1.2 million people, including Syrian refugees, were displaced due to the hostilities. Lebanese Health Minister Firass Abiad said on Thursday that nearly 2,000 people died and over 9,000 others were injured in Israeli attacks.

How the US chooses its president: a step-by-step guide

The US presidential election follows a multi-step process, starting with party primaries and caucuses where candidates are selected. Each party then holds a national convention to officially nominate its candidate.

Citizens cast their ballots on election day, but the winner is determined by the Electoral College where electors from each state decide based on the popular vote. A candidate needs at least 270 out of 538 electoral votes to win. If no candidate reaches this number, the House of Representatives selects the president.

Explore Sputnik's infographics to discover how the entire US presidential election process works from start to finish.

What’s at stake in the EU-China EV trade war? A breakdown of potential fallout

💬 “The goal” of the EU’s proposed tariff hike on Chinese electric vehicles “is to foster a European EV industry” with state backing and support, but could trigger a massive trade war unless both sides adopt “bold ideas and wisdom” to resolve the dispute, Francesco Sisci, a Beijing-based China expert and author, told Sputnik, commenting on the European Commission’s vote last Friday to approve heightened duties of up to 45% on Chinese EVs.

“Of course the Chinese can export their EVs to third countries and from there they could sneak cars back into Europe. But these loopholes could be closed and they could not affect the overall trend,” Sisci said, commenting on China’s predicament. The EU “is not backing down on this,” and that World Trade Organization-facilitated mediation “doesn’t work anymore,” requiring a “bilateral agreement the two parties will hopefully sign,” the observer said.

If an agreement can’t be reached, Beijing has an array of options to hit back at Brussels – whose economic prospects have already been dimmed in recent years thanks to soaring energy costs, which have undermined the competitiveness of Europe’s industrial output.

China’s options for retaliation may include:

◻️ Double-digit tariffs on European gas-guzzling big-engine luxury cars like Porsche, Mercedes and BMW.

◻️ Duties on European pork, dairy, wine, cognac and other niche food products. Beijing already announced a probe into the EU’s subsidies for dairy exports in August, complementing similar probes into pork and brandy.

◻️ Europe’s chemical and medical device exports have also been put under the microscope by Chinese authorities for subsidies, and French and Italian luxury goods like perfume could also be targeted.

◻️ Other options for retaliation include machinery, industrial inputs, and aerospace products, although US business media doesn’t believe Beijing will go that far unless pressured.

◻️ China could also choose a non-tariff route, such as increasing investments in European factories to evade tariffs altogether.

Hundreds of billions of euros are at stake in the China-EU trade spat. In 2023, China exported €515.9 billion worth of goods to the EU, contrasted with €223.6 billion heading the other way, for a total trade deficit with the Asian nation of a whopping €292 billion.
