🔥 Thousands flee homes near N. Carolina fertilizer plant fire

An uncontrolled fire at a fertilizer plant in North Carolina forced thousands of people to evacuate as firefighters stood back on Tuesday because of the danger of a large explosion.

Authorities drove through neighborhoods and knocked on doors asking residents to leave within a one-mile radius (1.6 km) of the Winston Weaver Company fertilizer plant on the north side of Winston-Salem. No injuries were reported.

The city’s fire chief said the fire had been “relatively static,” but with 600 tons of combustible ammonium nitrate stored at the site, the risk of an explosion would remain through Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the company started submitting data for the Food and Drug Administration to grant emergency approval for kids under 5 to receive their vaccine. Once approved, pediatricians will be able to administer shots within a matter of days.

Although children are at much lower risk of developing severe illness from covid compared to adults, their hospitalizations with the virus have increased during the recent surge of infections, raising concerns about the long-term implications for kids’ health.

White House chief medical advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci said at the time that younger children would likely need a three-dose vaccine.

💊 Native American tribes reach $590M settlement over opioids

Native American tribes in the US have reached a $590 million settlement with drugmaker Johnson & Johnson and the country’s three largest drug distribution companies, according to a court filing made Tuesday.

All federally-recognized tribes will be able to participate in the settlement, even if they did not sue over opioids. Many tribes have been hit hard by the addiction and overdose crisis across the US. One study cited in the settlement found that Native Americans had the highest per-capita rate of opioid overdoses of any population group in 2015.

The tribes will be required to use the money to deal with the opioid epidemic. Drugs such as OxyContin, heroin and fentanyl have been linked to over 500,000 deaths in the US in the past two decades.
