Ex-US colonel: Foreign mercs in Ukrainian sabotage unit point to Kiev's troop shortfall
The presence of foreign mercenaries in the team of Ukrainian militants that tried and failed to sneak into Russia showcases Kiev’s “extreme shortage of experienced troops,” veteran international consultant and retired US Army lieutenant colonel Earl Rasmussen tells Sputnik.
The “special operations” type of mission this sabotage team was assigned required “highly skilled” operators capable of performing sabotage or reconnaissance, so in light of the lack of such people in the Ukrainian forces “it seems reasonable they'd be turning to mercenaries,” Rasmussen explains.
Regarding the objective this team was likely pursuing, he speculates that, given the relatively small size of the unit involved, it was likely “a reconnaissance, maybe reconnaissance in force, basically looking for a weak point” or a potential target for sabotage. Noting that the United States has been involved in the Ukrainian conflict “for quite a while,” this recent incident may be a hint of a paradigm shift on the side of Russia's adversaries.

“Getting directly involved behind the scenes, that is kind of a new direction,” he muses. “Is it a sign of desperation? Is it a sign of weakness on the Ukrainian side? Probably both.”

Ukraine marks Soviet WWII victory while lauding Nazi collaborators
The so-called Liberation Day celebrated in Ukraine today helps showcase the chaos that reigns in Kiev nowadays.
The anniversary in question marks the date when Soviet forces drove the Nazis from what was at the time the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1944.However, the elites in Kiev have long branded the Soviet period in Ukraine as a USSR occupation. As such, describing the Soviet's efforts to drive the Nazis from Ukraine as a “liberation” sits strangely when it is done by people who abhor all things Soviet.
Furthermore, the powers that be in Ukraine have a long history of lauding Ukrainians who fought against the USSR in WWII, either as part of Waffen SS units such as the infamous 1st Galician Division or the so-called Ukrainian Insurgent Army (the perpetrator of the infamous Volhynia massacre).
The fondness of Ukrainian military and paramilitary units for Nazi insignia today, a well-documented fact, also does not quite match the apparent desire to commemorate a Soviet victory, equally so as the habit of Ukrainian officials renaming streets that previously bore the names of Soviet WWII heroes.
Finally, Volodymyr Zelensky in his address on October 28, 2022, did not specify who exactly liberated the Soviet Ukraine from the Nazis in 1944, merely giving lip service to “all who fought against Nazism during World War II.”

US ‘playing with fire’ by sending arms and mercenaries to Ukraine, French journalist warns
"[The American administration] has been playing with fire for a very long time, given the weapons, planes, ammunition, and funds provided. In any case, red lines were crossed long ago," Laurent Brayard, a French journalist in Donbass, told Sputnik, commenting on the elimination of a saboteur with a tattoo indicating membership in the US Army's elite 75th Ranger Regiment during an attempted infiltration of Russia's state border in the Bryansk region.
According to Brayard, foreign mercenaries have been present for a long time. "They could very well be former special forces mercenaries or, of course, soldiers directly recruited from the U.S. or another Western country to be sent to Ukraine on contract, often in Ukrainian uniforms."

"The Biden-Harris camp is clearly afraid of losing this [presidential] election. This would likely mean an end to financial support from the United States. And, of course, the frontline situation is unfavorable for Ukraine. The Russians are advancing everywhere," he concluded.

"As we've said many times that we're for the resistance, and we'll be with it until our last breath. God gave, God took. And now I want to appeal to Netanyahu: let him get off our backs a little bit! Because enough is enough, there's nowhere else to go. We want to live! We don't want anything else. No war, no airplanes, no fronts, no governments. We want a place where we can bow our heads in peace, sleep, live our beautiful lives. That's the message I have," he revealed.

Trump vs Harris: How the race influences the US secessionist movement
Around 25 US states are "ready" to leave the federation, according to a claim made by Daniel Miller, the president of the secessionist Texas Nationalist Movement, in April. The election integrity controversy surrounding the 2020 vote triggered the spike in secessionist sentiment in the Lone Star state which is continuing to grow ahead of election day.
According to Shannon, "the overreach of the Biden-Harris administration," starting from the anti-Trump lawfare and ending with the transgender propaganda, has fueled the division dramatically.
Last February, House Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene called for nothing short of a "national divorce" between Republican and Democratic states. The YouGov February 2024 poll indicated that 23% of Americans would support their state seceding from the US, whereas 28% would support a state other than their own leaving.

The election integrity controversy surrounding the 2020 vote triggered the spike in secessionist sentiment in the Lone Star state which is continuing to grow ahead of election day.
"If there becomes a real split, it'll probably start with Ron DeSantis in Florida, who will begin by refusing to cooperate with any federal agency that tries to, and this is assuming Harris wins, impose these, frankly, totalitarian edicts from Washington," Michael Shannon, a Conservative political commentator and Newsmax columnist, tells Sputnik.
According to Shannon, "the overreach of the Biden-Harris administration," starting from the anti-Trump lawfare and ending with the transgender propaganda, has fueled the division dramatically.
"Things like that and then the federal government mandating that men who think they are women can compete in women's sport, arresting abortion protesters, people praying quietly in front of abortion mills, the political manhunt against the January 6th rioters that has extended even down to grandmothers, all of this really concerns Republicans, conservatives and I guess the few independents who still respect the rule of law."

Clash at the frontier: Russia defends territory against US-backed 'terror network' on borders
"Despite numerous attempts by the American side to conceal its direct involvement in multiple operations against Russia in Ukraine, and only stating its role in coordinating logistical, military, and financial support, it has often emerged that American forces are among various mercenary groups fighting on the side of the Kiev regime against Russia. Some of these are veterans, while others are active American officers," Ruhollah Modabber, a political scientist and expert in international relations, tells Sputnik, commenting on the participation of foreign mercenaries in the attempted incursion into Russia's Bryansk region.
According to him, the US cannot hide behind various facades; it has been emphasized multiple times that the Ukrainian crisis has American and British roots. Some people naively approach this issue, failing to see the roots of the Ukrainian crisis and falling into the trap of Western and NATO propaganda.

Trump vs Harris: How the race affects US polarization
The 2024 elections are unlikely to bring an end to political polarization in US society, Michael Shannon, a Conservative political commentator and Newsmax columnist, tells Sputnik.
According to YouGov's recent survey, Democrats and Republicans think they have little in common, unlike their peers a decade ago. Either candidates' victory could leave the country further disunited, the pundit believes.
The Democratic Party has already gone to the extremes, comparing Trump to Hitler and calling him a threat to democracy which could ignite civil disobedience and protests in the event he wins, according to the pundit.
Given the level of distrust of the election procedure and growing polarization in US society, the peaceful transfer of power remains a big if, according to the pundit.

According to YouGov's recent survey, Democrats and Republicans think they have little in common, unlike their peers a decade ago. Either candidates' victory could leave the country further disunited, the pundit believes.
"There are two factors. One, [Donald] Trump needs to win in excess of the steal. They are already talking about it taking 10 or 12 days to finally count all the votes. You only do that if you're trying to steal the election," Shannon says. "The second factor is - will the leftists accept the loss."
The Democratic Party has already gone to the extremes, comparing Trump to Hitler and calling him a threat to democracy which could ignite civil disobedience and protests in the event he wins, according to the pundit.
"If they turn loose the same rioters and antifa types that they did when George Floyd died, then you're going to have unrest and rioting and destruction. But it's going to be in the blue states. It's not going to be in the red states. So Trump's going to have to make a decision. Is he going to let the blue states just burn down? Or is he going to intervene and stop that?"
Given the level of distrust of the election procedure and growing polarization in US society, the peaceful transfer of power remains a big if, according to the pundit.

Trump vs Harris: What about US unity after the election?
The Trump-Harris race is very close, making the country almost evenly split, Aubrey Jewett, a political science professor at the University of Central Florida, tells Sputnik. Bottom line is that one side is going to be very disappointed by the election results no matter who wins, according to the pundit.
Therefore, the question is whether the winner would try to pull people together, or whether half of American voters will remain alienated, the academic noted, drawing attention to the fact that presently there is a big difference between Democratic and Republican states.
The professor warns that partisan divisions might get worse potentially in the longer run.

Bottom line is that one side is going to be very disappointed by the election results no matter who wins, according to the pundit.
"If Trump wins, you're going to have almost 50% of the country where Democrats are very disappointed," Jewett said. "And if Kamala Harris wins, you're going to have all those Republican Trump fans, almost 50% of the country. They're going to be very upset as well. I think in the short run, it's definitely going to exacerbate, make it [national disunity] worse."
Therefore, the question is whether the winner would try to pull people together, or whether half of American voters will remain alienated, the academic noted, drawing attention to the fact that presently there is a big difference between Democratic and Republican states.
"We'll have to see how the leaders on both sides react if they react as normal or the winner is gracious and the loser is gracious, and then maybe those partisan divides won't be so bad. But if they do not, if they question the election results, or if the winner really rubs it in and says 'okay, now I'm going to do everything I want and I'm only representing the people that voted for me' - that's not going to be great for American society overall."
The professor warns that partisan divisions might get worse potentially in the longer run.
