NFL sued for racial discrimination by former Dolphins coach Brian Flores

Brian Flores, fired last month as head coach of the Miami Dolphins, has sued the National Football League and each of its franchises for racial discrimination.

The NFL for decades has been criticized for a paucity of Black coaches, and now Flores plans to hold the league's feet to the legal fire.

There is currently only one Black head coach in the NFL, although there are still a few open positions. Flores' law firm estimates that around 70% of NFL players are Black.

💊 Native American tribes reach $590M settlement over opioids

Native American tribes in the US have reached a $590 million settlement with drugmaker Johnson & Johnson and the country’s three largest drug distribution companies, according to a court filing made Tuesday.

All federally-recognized tribes will be able to participate in the settlement, even if they did not sue over opioids. Many tribes have been hit hard by the addiction and overdose crisis across the US. One study cited in the settlement found that Native Americans had the highest per-capita rate of opioid overdoses of any population group in 2015.

The tribes will be required to use the money to deal with the opioid epidemic. Drugs such as OxyContin, heroin and fentanyl have been linked to over 500,000 deaths in the US in the past two decades.

🇺🇸🇺🇦Former US President Donald Trump says he would like to take a look at the trannoscript of the telephone conversation between US President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that took place on January 27. In 2019, then-President Trump asked Zelenskyy to reopen the investigation into Ukrainian energy company Burisma and the activities of Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, in Ukraine, which eventually resulted in the US president faced impeachment procedures.

Trump also slams Biden over "the military embarrassment" in Afghanistan, record inflation and worsening relations with Russia and China.

The abrupt end of his nine-year tenure immediately throws into flux the direction of CNN and its parent company, WarnerMedia, which is expected to be acquired later this year by Discovery Inc. in one of the nation’s largest media mergers.

💵 US public debt exceeds $30 trillion for first time.

According to Treasury Department data published on Tuesday, US public debt has exceeded $30 trillion for first time after an increase of $7 trillion in the last two years, coinciding with the COVID-19 pandemic. Of the $30 trillion of public debt, $23.5 trillion belong to creditors ($8 trillion to foreign investors headed by Japan and China) and the remaining $6.5 trillion is debt contracted by the government with itself.

Biden signed a law on December 16 suspending the public debt ceiling and preventing the country from incurring a payments suspension on its national debt for the first time in history. The law increased funds by $2.5 trillion to deal with debts already contracted, which will allow the US to maintain its borrowing capacity until 2023.
