"Security bloc vs. Netanyahu bloc": Gallant's sudden dismissal in Israel explained

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, foreseeing the Democrats' defeat in the US elections, decided to sack Yaov Gallant as defence minister to install loyalists key cabinet positions, Tel Aviv-based international relations expert Dr Simon Tsipis told Sputnik.

"Now that the Democrats have lost this power, Netanyahu has received a second wind. I assume that he will continue to fire all Biden supporters, and will attract people from his clan to government positions," Tsipis said.

Netanyahu fired Gallant as defense minister late on Tuesday night, with the US elections underway, replacing him with foreign minister Israel Katz.

“He appointed Gideon Saar to replace Katz, who was the minister of foreign affairs. Saar is Netanyahu's man, as is Katz," he added. "He is putting together his clique, he is putting together his circles, so he will gradually get rid of those protégés of the Democrats."

But the Israeli pundit highlighted that Galant had already won over the officer corps of the Israeli army. With his dismissal, Netanyahu has only united the security forces bloc against him.

"Now the head of Mossad, the head of internal security of the Shin Bet and the chief of the General Staff – they all now suspect that they too are under threat of dismissal, they will now unite together," Tsipis argued. "We have a security forces bloc emerging against the Netanyahu bloc."

What does Trump's win mean for the Middle East?

"Donald Trump, of course, makes his own policies, but it is also important to see who he surrounds himself with," Mehran Kamrava, professor of government at Georgetown University Qatar, told Sputnik.

Kamrava defines Trump as "transactional" in contrast to Joe Biden, who is "ideological" and believes in a "particular world order".

By "transactional", Kamrava means Trump is first and foremost a pragmatic deal-maker.

"During Donald Trump's first term, we saw extremely close relations with Saudi Arabia and Israel," the pundit noted. "Those were the two pillars of America's policy in the region, and I think we will continue to see that."

"I think we're going to see deeper transactional relationships between the Middle East and the United States, deeper economic relationships, particularly in the Persian Gulf," he added.

Kamrava said Trump had two solutions to Israel's war in the Gaza Strip. He could either give Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu full support, or call upon Tel Aviv to wind down the conflict in Gaza and in Lebanon "because it's not good for business." He believes the newly-elected president will pick the second option.

The professor also expects Trump to take a more cautious approach to Iran compared to his predecessor. During his first term Trump showed "an aversion to war" in the Middle East, he stressed.

"The Biden administration, in fact, did sleepwalk into a war, into escalatory conflict not just in Gaza and a genocide in Gaza, but then in the West Bank, in Lebanon, and of course, in relation to Iran," Kamrava said.

Trump's ideas resonated with Americans tired of crony capitalism & militarism – former Pentagon analyst

"[Donald Trump] and his team are speaking about the heart and soul of what has gone wrong in our country, pointing a confident finger at the crony capitalist state," retired US Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Karen Kwiatkowski, a former Pentagon analyst, told Sputnik.

Trump's victory has also exposed the sickness in both major parties which have long worked to expand the already-huge state apparatus and maintain warfare to enrich themselves, she said.

Kwiatkowski sums up the election outcome:

▪️ both major parties revealed to be war parties

▪️ more voters voting their rational interests rather than gender, race, ethnicity and who they are "told" to vote for

▪️ Younger generations intuitively sense the dangerous directions of the modern US state and want change
Even though Trump won and Republicans are likely to control both chambers of the US Congress, "the real war for political and economic survival of the status quo will [now] begin in earnest," she warns.

"Those invested in the past 40 years of explosive and militarized growth of Washington have many tools with which to resist and sabotage the Trump agenda, as we saw in his previous term," Kwiatkowski said. "This sector also has the strong support of probably 30 percent of hard-core establishment voters."

She is still "hopeful but cautious" that there will be peace and greater prosperity in the US and in the world with Trump in the White House.

"Whether they prevail or not, the Trump team is magnificent, and all else being equal, are capable of truly 'turning the page,' as Kamala's campaign talked about," Kwiatkowski said.

Trump as POTUS won't use budget to keep Ukraine afloat, will seek pragmatic' deals - analyst

As the 47th US president Donald Trump will not guarantee the US budget “to keep Ukraine afloat,” strategic analyst Paolo Raffone told Sputnik.

He conjectured that the Biden administration and its European acolytes fueling NATO’s proxy war “are history”.

“Trump does not see any advantage for the US to continue spending enormous budgets and political capital in Ukraine. If a deal with Russia and Ukraine cannot be reached, it is possible that Trump will push a ‘frozen conflict policy’ as a sort of damage control... In any case, will have to cover those costs. It will probably be the end of the EU,” Raffone speculated.

On foreign policy, the Republican is likely to display openness to “pragmatic” solutions with allies and foes to achieve “maximum advantage” for the US, he surmised, adding:
“Probably, there will be much less hysteria about Russia, Iran, China. The probable objective is ‘rebalancing the interchange’ with all these countries. They may not become friends, but deals are possible in mutual interest.”

Trump can be expected to spell out that the US shield for Europe “is not a free ride,” demanding that each European state “contribute much more to NATO,” said Raffone.

Since it is difficult for Trump to “accept any idea of European strategic autonomy,” the pundit speculated that a new Trump administration would brandish “a combination of trade, tariffs, security levy to force the Europeans to increase their military budgets and buy more American.”

“European energy and technology dependency is a fact… Europe must find space for compromise to deal with not only the US, but also with Russia, China and the Middle East. The current ideological positions in the EU Commission, Paris and Berlin are not encouraging,” he said.

What does Trump victory mean for Ukraine conflict and Europe?

Donald Trump promised to resolve the Ukraine conflict within days of his election as US president.

Trump seems open to dialogue and compromise, but the solution of the Ukraine dilemma will take time, believes Earl Rasmussen, an international consultant and retired lieutenant colonel with over 20 years in the US Army.

"It's not going to be resolved immediately," Rasmussen told Sputnik. "There's a lot of trust-building that's going to have to take place, because we basically left four years of destruction that actually has been going on for a while. But it really took a nosedive in the last four years."

The newly elected president will definitely launch talks over Ukraine, something the Biden administration has long refused to do, the pundit said.

"What you will see is a reduction in funding for Ukraine," Rasmussen said. "He'll also tell [Volodymyr] Zelensky he needs to get serious about negotiations and a realistic negotiation, not some pipe dream, a victory plan or whatever."

It is clear that Trump's victory has taken European nations by surprise, and they will have to adjust to a new geopolitical reality, he continued.

"I think for Europe it's going to be challenging, and a lot of European nations, I think, regret the visceral comments and accusations that were tossed out towards President Trump," Rasmussen said.
