Legacy media attempts U-turn after Trump’s blowout victory
Mainstream media are wallowing in melancholy this week over Donald Trump’s surprise comeback, with pre-November 5 self-assuredness giving way to desolation bordering on despondency after Tuesday.
Here’s how major outlets flipped the noscript in 24 hours:
New York Times
💬 The self-proclaimed “newspaper of record” led the way with explanations of Trump’s impressive performance, with its frontpage headline story: “How Trump Won, and How Harris Lost” outlining how he “transformed seeming political vulnerabilities into advantages” by defying the “normal laws of gravity” in politics.
💬 Another frontpage piece, “How Trump Connected With So Many Americans,” explained how the candidate’s “blend of comedy, fury, optimism, darkness and cynicism” showed voters “he gets us.”
💬 One columnist put it even more bluntly in a piece noscriptd “Voters to Elites: Do You See Me Now?” highlighting how as Democrats in 2024 “veered toward identitarian performance art, Donald Trump jumped into the class war with both feet” with a “simple” message: “These people have betrayed you, and they are morons to boot.”
⚡️That’s a sharp contrast to the Times pre-election messaging, including a November 4 analysis noscriptd “If Harris Wins, Here’s Why” citing turnout, the gender gap, promises of “change,” and Trump’s “turning off” of voters as factors that should push the Democrat over the top.
Washington Post
💬 The Washington Post’s stinging post-election coverage was equally illuminating, running stories like “Democrats can’t blame anyone but themselves this time” and “As Democrats begin to squabble, don’t lose sight of why Trump won” explaining how Trump’s ability to connect with Hispanics and blacks allowed him to win, and blaming Harris for shunning media and sending out aides “to quietly tell reporters she’d changed her mind about radical positions she’d taken in 2019.”
⚡️If only the Post had offered these pearls of wisdom before the election, Democratic strategists could adjust in time. Instead, WaPo up until a couple days ago featured stories like “Is Harris winning crucial late deciders?” and “More voters expect Harris to win. Here’s why that could actually matter.”
