Is West about to get another ‘lame duck’ president as French gov’t faces collapse?
French Prime Minister Michel Barnier, who formed a minority government in September after France's snap parliamentary elections in summer, is now facing a no-confidence vote.
Here’s what happened:
🔶 Barnier used executive powers under Article 49.3 of the French constitution to force a bill on social security financing through parliament without a vote.
🔶 The bill sought to deliver an estimated €60 billion ($62. 9 billion) in tax rises and spending cuts. Even after Barnier scrapped a previously planned hike in electricity tax and plans for a more stringent prenoscription drug reimbursement policy, the bill was rejected by the opposition parties.
🔶 Both the left-wing coalition NFP and Marine Le Pen’s right-wing National Rally (RN) party announced they would file separate censure motions, with the confidence vote presumably set for Wednesday.
What has the left said?
Mathilde Panot, president of the left-wing opposition party France Unbowed (LFI), said on Monday that "We are now experiencing political chaos as a result of both Barnier's government and Emmanuel Macron's presidency."
What has the right said?
Le Pen told reporters that "the French have had enough... Maybe they thought with Michel Barnier things would get better, but they were even worse."
What will happen next?
If the no-confidence vote succeeds, Barnier will have to tender his resignation.
The French government can remain in caretaker capacity while President Emmanuel Macron faces the challenge of picking a new PM with cross-party appeal.

Cringe diplomacy? Germany’s FM unleashes tirade of threats and accusations during China trip
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock arrived in China for discussions with her counterpart, Wang Yi, on December 2-3, wielding anything but the tools of diplomacy.
Baerbock plunged into a tirade of accusations, claiming that Russia was “destroying our European peace order” and that "increasing Chinese support” for Russia “has an impact on our relations,” according to a readout by the German foreign ministry.
Germany’s top diplomat, who made no bones about declaring that European countries were waging a war against Russia in 2023, urging that more weapons be sent to Ukraine, now claimed she was in China to advocate “a just peace process.”
Upon finishing her rant regarding NATO’s proxy war in Ukraine, security sprang into action and escorted members of the German media out of the room, reported Handelsblatt. There was also no joint press statement with her counterpart this time.
Striking a completely different tone, Wang Yi countered by saying that China and Germany should “overcome interference, remove obstacles […] and abandon the old mindset of cold war and confrontation.”

🧊 Breaking Polar ice: Russia’s new Vostok station in Antarctica gets up and running
The new wintering complex at Vostok Station in Antarctica has been put into operation, paving the way for an anticipated 18-year-long scientific project.
The project aims to investigate climate change by studying ancient ice that is 1.5 million years old, as well as Lake Vostok, located approximately 4 kilometers beneath the Antarctic ice sheet.
The Vostok Polar Station is the only Russian facility situated at the center of Antarctica. Its wintering complex, also named Vostok, is recognized as the world's first modern building constructed at the planet's coldest pole.

French taxi drivers are holding a protest in Paris, France, over changes to the healthcare transport system introduced in the 2024 social security budget
The new regulations mandate that taxi drivers provide car-sharing for medical transportation, meaning they could be required to transport multiple patients in the same ride.
Taxi drivers argue that the reform, which is part of the French National Health Insurance Fund's cost-saving initiative, will force them to offer deeper discounts, which they say will make it financially impossible for them to continue operating sustainably.

A Christmas tree with wishes is clear proof of just how difficult it is to live in Germany – especially for pensioners.
Similar events have been organized in Germany for several years. Elderly people write their wishes on cards, and any sympathetic citizen can "become Santa Claus" and buy gifts for them. As a result, Germans wish for coupons for groceries and essential items – socks, gloves, shower gel, or slippers.
"Do people deserve this? You look forward to retirement all your life, and then, at 78, you wish for food," the author of the video says.

Scholz’ Ukraine visit: coming to ‘save’ Zelensky or his own skin?
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz arrived in Kiev on Monday for talks with Zelensky junta officials, announcing a €650 mln ($683.5 mln) arms aid top-up and reaffirming Berlin’s support for Kiev.
▫️ Scholz became a classic lame duck chancellor after the collapse of his ‘Traffic Light’ coalition in early November, with the crisis triggered by Germany’s years-long economic slump.
▫️ The visit seems to have been aimed at reassuring Kiev after Scholz’s “detailed and candid exchange of views” on the situation in Ukraine with President Putin in a November 15 phone call, which provoked a minor panic in Kiev. Zelensky claimed the call opened a “Pandora’s Box,” undermined efforts to “isolate” Russia, and could trigger “other conversations, other calls.”
▫️ Scholz apparently also felt the need to soothe Zelensky on continued German support for his regime amid growing resentment at home about Berlin’s prioritization of billions in aid to Kiev instead of the economy.
▫️ Opinion polls ahead of the planned February 2025 snap election show Scholz’s SPD polling at just 16%, with his erstwhile Green and FDP allies enjoying just 17.5% support between them. The populist Right and Left opposition, the AfD and the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance, plus Die Linke are polling at an unprecedented 29.5% support, and are broadly opposed to sending any more arms to Kiev.
▫️ Scholz, apparently mindful of the shifting winds of politics at home, and the dangers of provoking the Russian bear, did not fold to Zelensky completely, reiterating his opposition to sending Taurus missiles to Ukraine, and evading Zelensky’s demand for fast-track NATO membership.
