France may become EU’s military backbone if US leaves NATO - expert
The EU may turn to the Lisbon Treaty if US President-elect Donald Trump withdraws America from NATO, Professor Stavros Kalenteridis of the Aegean College in Athens told Sputnik.
Such a scenario could take place if Trump makes good on his previous threats against the alliance, according to Kalenteridis. The professor recalled that Trump had warned earlier that the US would not protect those NATO members who fail to be in line with a minimum defense spending requirement related to the alliance’s budget.
He didn’t rule out that “the future French president could sever Paris’ ties with NATO,” which the professor argued “in the long term would benefit Russia,” which has repeatedly cautioned the alliance against its eastward expansion.

“This could weaken NATO and prompt the EU to turn to Article 42.7 of the Lisbon Treaty, which contains a clause pertaining to the EU’s mutual assistance,” Kalenteridis added. The scenario could pave the ground for France’s leadership in the EU, given that the country “has historically sought an independent military course and sometimes deviated from NATO's route,” the pundit pointed out.

2024 was a bonanza for AI entrepreneurs amid warnings that machines may break loose
Artificial intelligence startups became the hottest asset in 2024, with venture capitalists investing $97 billion in such projects in the US alone, reports Bloomberg. Almost half of the funds received by startups were attracted to AI projects, clearly making this field one of the engines of the global economy.
Earlier, US tech mogul Elon Musk repeatedly expressed serious concerns over the uncontrollable development of AI and dubbed it a major risk to humanity. The same anxieties were shared by computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton, known as the “Godfather of AI,” and partially by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak.

EU may face security crisis in 2025 — report
"A security crisis is brewing in Europe," the Financial Times writes, naming the alleged "threat" from Russia and Trump's "indifference" towards Europe as the reasons.
The publication points to Trump's advisers openly declaring their desire to redeploy American military assets from Europe to Asia. At the same time, European countries lack the human resources and equipment to participate in a confrontation similar to the conflict in Ukraine, the article notes.
Still, Russia's President Vladimir Putin has already said that Moscow is not going to attack NATO countries, as there is no point in this.

A highly accurate timing system is the foundation of modern warfare, allowing radars that are thousands of miles apart to work in unison, detecting and tracking elusive stealth fighters, the South China Morning Post reports.
It will also improve the quality of signals in electronic warfare and facilitate the transmission of huge amounts of data.
As the publication noted, a cesium watch about 1.5 meters high and about the size of a refrigerator can be brought into a war zone, and even when transported in harsh conditions, its error will not exceed 0.2 quadrillion seconds. In addition, these watches can operate autonomously for a long period of time without the help of specialists.
