🇷🇺 Russian oil transit to Europe will continue – Ukrainian PM

The transit of Russian oil via the Druzhba pipeline will not be stopped, despite the end of gas transit, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmygal stated in the Verkhovna Rada.

"Halting oil transit would violate Ukraine's commitments under the Energy Charter Treaty and the EU Association Agreement," he noted, adding that EU sanctions allow oil supplies to Hungary and Slovakia.

He warned that ending transit could lead to international arbitration by affected countries and the loss of EU financial assistance to Ukraine.

Training camp or escape route? Ukrainian soldiers desert from army base in Poland

Around 10% of Ukrainian soldiers sent to Poland for training vanish before completing the program, an anonymous Polish army source told Dziennik Gazeta Prawna (DGP).

They think the soldiers come with escape in mind. "It’s much easier to sign up for training abroad than to risk crossing the border illegally," the source said, adding that Poland doesn’t bother tracking down the deserters.

Some of the deserters even leave letters behind, though they keep their reasons to themselves.

DGP estimates that about 1,300 Ukrainian soldiers deserted while in Poland, which has trained 13,000 to 14,000 troops under the EU's EUMAM mission.

Over 1,700 troops from Ukraine’s 155th Mechanized Brigade, trained and equipped with great fanfare in France, deserted before reaching the battlefront.

A British man whose girlfriend mistakenly threw away a hard drive containing $750 million worth of the bitcoin cryptocurrency has been denied permission to search for it in a dump.

His partner made the expensive mistake in 2013, when Bitcoins were worth around $100 – now they trade for $95,000. Since then, the man has been desperately trying to recover his loss.

But authorities in South Wales where the contents of his bins were taken, have denied his request, made several years ago, to excavate the entire landfill.

The lengthy process has concluded with a judge finding "no prospects of success," media reported.

Basic facts:

Rare earths are a group of 17 silvery-white, soft heavy metals, including 15 lanthanides, plus scandium and yttrium, which share similar properties.

Despite the name, they aren’t particularly rare—lutetium, one of the least common, is 200 times more abundant than gold. What makes them "rare" is the challenge of finding large, easily mined deposits.

❄️ Is Greenland the new Arctic battleground for US and China?

Beijing offers Greenland lucrative opportunities, from logistics projects to rare earth mining – an area in which China excels. But the US frequently intervenes to disrupt these plans.

🔸 In 2016, Copenhagen blocked Hong Kong-based mining company General Nice from taking over the abandoned Gronnedal naval base, claiming security concerns likely under the influence of the US and NATO.

🔸 During Donald Trump’s first presidential term, the Pentagon thwarted China’s plans to invest in Greenland and build three airports. By June 2019, the China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) had withdrawn from the projects.

🔸 Chinese companies have been involved in two major mineral exploration projects in Greenland: the Citronen Fjord zinc project and the Kvanefjeld rare earth and uranium project in Southern Greenland.

🔸 The US has pressured Denmark to restrict China’s access to Greenland’s resources. On January 9, Reuters reported that the US lobbied Greenland's Tanbreez to prevent the sale of its rare earth deposits to China.

🔸 The Straits Times suggests that the incoming Trump administration cannot fully block China from investing in Greenland, collaborating with its authorities or using nearby shipping lanes.

🔸 But Trump’s comments about annexing the island indicate Washington will tighten its control over Greenland in the coming years.

🔥California wildfires threaten to scorch state’s insurance sector, spread losses nationwide

The wildfires ravaging Greater Los Angeles are turning into one of the worst disasters in US history, causing up to $150 billion in damage.

Stuck in the middle are California’s insurance companies, some of whom managed to flee before the disaster began, while others, including the state-backed FAIR Plan, face payouts that could bankrupt them.

▫️ Major insurers such as Allstate, AIG, and Chubb have already either stopped issuing new policies or quit California altogether in the last five years.

▫️ Nationwide announced plans to withdraw by June 2025, and State Farm, the largest home insurer in the state, has been cancelling policies since 2024, with over 72,000 left unrenewed to date.

▫️ Between 2020 and 2022, 2.8 million California homeowners lost coverage, including over 530,000+ in Los Angeles County.

▫️ California’s state-backed FAIR Plan stepped in where private companies backed out, but costs more (about $3,200 per year and climbing) and provides lower coverage. The program now faces $24 bln in losses.

▫️ The loss of the California market is likely to impact insurers' bottom lines and raise premiums, making them unaffordable for remaining clients. The fallout could also spread nationally as insurers raise rates elsewhere to cover losses.

▫️ Wildfires are just one of the natural disasters making wide swathes of the US uninsurable. Millions on the East Coast face declining coverage and rising premiums due to hurricanes and flooding.

▫️ In 2023 alone, the US experienced 28 major climate disasters, causing over $93 billion in damage.

❄️ F-35s in Greenland: US nuclear-capable fighters and Russia’s Arctic defense strategy

💬 "[Russia] has its own countermeasures for all threats," Nikolai Kostikin, an expert at the Bureau of Military-Political Analysis, told Sputnik, commenting on the potential deployment of F-35 stealth fighters equipped to carry B61-12 thermonuclear gravity bombs.

Russian Ambassador to Denmark Vladimir Barbin stated on January 10 that the US is building airfield infrastructure for F-35 fighters in Greenland.

How could F-35s be used in the Arctic?

The distance from Greenland to the Russian border is about 3,800 kilometers, and the prospect of operating the F-35 over such a large distance is not promising, Yuri Knutov, military expert and historian of the Air Defense Forces, told Sputnik.

He suggested the aircraft would only conduct patrol missions. The F-35s could also monitor US airspace and protect vessels in the Northern Sea Route (NSR), Knutov said.

How could Russia ensure security in its Arctic regions?

Russia is well-prepared to safeguard the NSR and adjacent Arctic territories, Knutov said:

🔸 Russia's Northern Fleet, based in Murmansk, Severomorsk and other locations, can destroy enemy aircraft including F-35s

🔸 Russian military bases along the NSR, especially Trilistnik, enable round-the-clock air and maritime monitoring and defense operations

🔸 Russian ground and air forces are specifically trained for Arctic combat operations

🔸 Oniks, Kalibr, Zircon and Kinzhal missiles can be deployed to counter potential threats

The US's new Arctic strategy

"Trump has repeatedly stated that he is ready to push Russia and China out of the Arctic. Deploying F-35s in Greenland is part of the US's preparations for Arctic penetration," Knutov said.

But the Arctic has traditionally been a zone of Russian interest, Kostikin noted.

Trump's rhetoric "reflects the contours of the new US policy, shaped by the resilience of Russian troops on the frontlines in Ukraine," Kostikin argued. "Russia has shown its resolve and determination to defend its own interests."
