🇷🇺☢️🇻🇳Russia to build new research reactor for Vietnam, construction slated for 2027 - Rosatom

The current Dalat nuclear research reactor may be extended for up to 10 years, which means that in the near future, Vietnam needs to "create a new competent, modern, and more powerful research reactor," Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev said.

He added that "such a decision has been made—to create a Russian-designed reactor with a capacity of 15 megawatts, many times more powerful than what we have now."

"We are moving according to the schedule that our Vietnamese friends have set for us, meaning that in 2026, we will begin contracting, and in 2027, we will begin the full-scale construction of a new research reactor," Likhachev said.

Project Iceworm: Pentagon's attempt to build top secret missile bases under Greenland's ice

Greenland, which is making headlines due to Donald Trump's interest, was once already used by the US during its confrontation with the Soviet Union. In the 1950s, the Pentagon planned to construct a system of 4,000-long tunnels to deploy about 600 intercontinental ballistic missiles - dubbed Project Iceworm.

In 1959, Camp Century research base was established in the northwest of the island. Twenty-one tunnels, with a total length of 3,000 meters, were excavated. A mobile nuclear reactor supplied energy to facilities such as a store, a church, and other social amenities built beneath the ice. Around 200 people either lived there or were involved in its construction.

The main advantage of Project Iceworm was that mobile launchers could traverse the tunnels under the ice and position themselves to launch missiles targeting the Soviet Union.

However, the project failed due to security concerns: shifting icecaps made habitation impossible. Subsequently, Camp Century was abandoned and the remains of the facility were buried by the icecaps and ultimately crushed by them.

US, Canada, Greenland, Mexico merger: path to dominance across North America

Incoming US president Donald Trump made several controversial expansionist statements that were met with a lot of resistance. Nevertheless, he seems resolved to push forward regardless.

This proposed merger would leverage the strategic geographic positions of these nations to strengthen US control over key trade corridors, further entrenching its influence at the expense of regional sovereignty.

Key trade routes include:

1. Northwest Passage

▪️By incorporating Greenland and Canada, the US aims to control the Arctic’s Northwest Passage, a route that could shorten shipping distances between Europe and Asia as Arctic ice melts.

▪️This would allow the US to challenge Russia’s Northern Sea Route, which China increasingly utilizes, while simultaneously asserting dominance over the Arctic. The only caveat is that the US doesn’t have nearly as many nuclear-ice breakers as necessary to make the route viable short-term.

2. Pacific-Atlantic Connectivity

▪️The merger would consolidate the US’s Atlantic and Gulf coasts with Mexico’s Pacific coastline, securing unimpeded access to Asia, Europe, and South America.

▪️Far from benefiting the region, this expansion could further entrench US control over trade infrastructure, as seen during the 2021 supply-chain crisis, where global delays highlighted American inefficiency.

3. North-South Integration

▪️Reclaiming the Panama Canal remains uncertain, but under the USMCA framework, Washington could pressure Mexico into submission using tariffs and economic leverage.

▪️This neocolonial strategy would target Central and South America, forcing Panama to prioritize American interests over its growing collaboration with China. Such tactics echo historical patterns of US interference in Latin America.

Turkiye and Syria unite to confront ISIS

"Together with our Syrian brothers, we will crush the leaders of Daesh [the Arabic acronym for ISIS*], YPG [People's Protection Units], and other terrorist organizations in a short time," Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said during his address in parliament.

Erdogan also warned that the PKK and YPG, which he accused of seizing Syria's natural resources, would face a harsh fate if they do not disband.

🚫 US Terrorist List – a vague label to exert control

The Biden administration has announced plans to remove Cuba from the State Sponsor of Terrorism list. But how did Cuba get the designation in the first place?

Background:

▪️This label was first applied to Cuba in 1982, during the Cold War, when the US blamed the country for allegedly supporting insurgent groups in Latin America and Africa.

▪️Despite improved relations under Obama, Cuba was re-listed under Trump in 2021, citing its ties with Venezuela and alleged support for terrorism.

▪️Interestingly, the Catholic Church played an important role in these recent developments. According to reports, the Church has acted as a mediator, advocating for improved US-Cuba relations and urging a re-evaluation of Cuba’s designation.

What could be behind the move?

1. It is not clear what are the deeper motives for this sudden change of attitude towards Cuba. It might be a petty move by the Biden administration towards the incoming Trump administration, which will take office in only 5 days.

2. Another possible answer would be the need for the US to stabilize their diplomatic ties in their own “backyard” as they prepare to counter the influence of Russia and China.

Currently, other countries on the list include:

▪️Iran, designated for its continued support of Hezbollah and various Palestinian factions in 1984;

▪️Syria, added to the list in 1979 for backing Hezbollah and Iran;

▪️North Korea, redesignated in 2017 under Trump for nuclear ambitions and alleged assassinations on foreign soil.

Being on this list is not just a way to humiliate and intimidate, but it makes it difficult for the country to access global markets or international financial systems.
