Unpacking Trump’s ‘Drill, Baby, Drill’

Putting oil prices down by OPEC means more production in the market, which could benefit the US, Marc Ayoub, a Lebanese energy policy researcher and non-resident fellow at the Tahir Institute for Middle East Policy, told Sputnik.

After entering office, new US President Donald Trump stressed that his administration will prioritize oil extraction in line with the "drill, baby, drill" formula, one of the key factors in Trump’s policy.

“Flooding the market with barrels of oil both from the United States and OPEC will have a reflection on the US economy in terms of less inflation [in America] and more public and private revenues,” Ayoub pointed out.

There’s also a nuance regarding Russia’s current oil exports to Asian countries. If global oil prices start to plummet, “those players who are buying Russian oil will have no benefits in purchasing it,” the analyst concluded.

Speaking at the 2025 World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump in particular said he would ask Saudi Arabia and other OPEC nations to "bring down the cost of oil." Apart from Saudi Arabia, OPEC comprises Algeria, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, the United Arab Emirates, and Venezuela.

Marco Rubio, Secretary of State, instructed department staff to implement the strict new guidelines for official documentation, the Guardian reports.

The policy aims to restrict government identification to biological sex, as per the executive order issued by President Trump saying that only "immutable biological classification" (male or female) be used in official documents, the article adds.

Previously, applicants could select ‘X’ to denote “unspecified or another gender identity.”

Why isn’t Hungary extending anti-Russian sanctions?

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban outlined three conditions for Ukraine if President Zelensky wants Hungary to support sanctions against Russia.

Hungary will only back the sanctions if Ukraine:

1️⃣ Restores the transit of Russian gas through its territory

2️⃣ Ceases attacks on the TurkStream pipeline

3️⃣Stops threatening Russian oil transit

On January 1, Russia's Gazprom announced that it no longer has the technical or legal ability to transit gas through Ukraine following the expiration of a five-year contract.

As a result, natural gas prices in the European market have surged by 20%.

'As soon as possible' — Kremlin called on resumption of arms control negotiations between Russia and US

Russia has previously spoken about its interest in dialogue in the field of arms control; the ball is on the side of the United States. Dmitry Peskov, Kremlin spokesman, said.

When discussing the issue of arms reduction, the nuclear capabilities of all countries must be taken into account, he added.

He also touched upon the Ukraine conflict, saying:

Zelensky cannot be ready for a settlement to the Ukraine conflict, because for this to happen, it is necessary to hold negotiations, but he has forbidden them himself.
