🔥Fire at key Australian lithium mine raises industry concerns

The Mount Holland lithium mine in Western Australia has reportedly shut down after a fire engulfed the site, approximately 105 km southeast of Southern Cross. Hot weather and strong winds have fueled nearby bushfires, forcing evacuations.

The shutdown has sparked worries about significant disruptions to the lithium industry, critical for semiconductors and electric vehicles (EVs).

The Mt Holland project, launched in 2024, includes:

🟠An open-cut mine, concentrator, and refinery expected to produce lithium hydroxide in early 2025.

🟠A 50+ year operational lifespan, owned by Covalent Lithium, Wesfarmers, and SQM.

🟠Production of 380,000 tons of spodumene concentrate annually, refined into 50,000 tons of battery-grade lithium hydroxide – enough to power one million EVs.

The mine was seen as key to reducing reliance on lithium processing dominated by countries like China. With lithium demand forecast to surge fortyfold by 2035 due to EV growth, the shutdown highlights vulnerabilities in the global supply chain.

German Christian Democrats propose state of emergency over migrant crisis

Amid the catastrophic influx of illegal immigrants and growing violence, the German opposition bloc of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU) is calling for the introduction of long-term controls at Germany's borders and the denial of entry to all foreigners who do not have permission to stay in the country.

Newspaper Bild reports that the proposal includes a clause to declare A STATE OF EMERGENCY in Germany over the influx of illegal immigrants, allowing authorities to introduce full border controls and allow European Union legislation to be circumvented at German borders.

100 days to peace? Alleged timeline for Ukraine conflict's resolution emerges

The purported plan proposes a ceasefire by Easter, and peace by May 9 – the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII in Europe. Published by Strana .ua, its authenticity remains unconfirmed.

🔸 According to the report’s timeline, Trump will call Putin and Zelensky in late January/early February, with Zelensky expected to revoke the peace talks ban.

🔸 Face-to-face meetings are planned for February-March to draft a peace deal.

🔸 A truce begins April 20 (Easter), with Ukrainian forces withdrawing from Kursk.

🔸 Late April: An international peace conference starts, mediated by the US, China, Europe, and Global South countries, with all prisoners exchanged.

🔸 May 9: A final peace declaration is to be issued.

📑 Terms:

🔹 Upon the conflict's conclusion, Ukraine will end martial law, hold elections in August (including pro-Russian parties), and halt persecution of the Orthodox Church.

🔹 It will declare neutrality, abandon NATO ambitions, and stop seeking to reclaim Russian-held territories, without recognizing their status.

🔹 Ukraine can pursue EU membership by 2030, with the EU leading reconstruction efforts.

🔹 Its military size remains unchanged, with US support for modernization.

🔹 Some Western sanctions, including on Russian energy exports to Europe, will be lifted.

🗣Reactions:

🔊 Zelensky aide Andriy Ermak dismissed the existence of a 100-day Trump plan as “fake news.”

🔊 Western outlets, including WSJ and The Independent, previously reported on Trump’s ambition to end the Ukraine crisis by spring.

🔊 Belarusian President Lukashenko said Sunday “the light at the end of the tunnel” in the Ukraine crisis would “appear this year.”

So much for "flawless" vetting

Discussing the US refugee program, CBS host Margaret Brennan claimed "these people are vetted!"

Vice President JD Vance replied: "Just like the guy who planned a terrorist attack in Oklahoma a few months ago?"

Not approved

French President Emmanuel Macron’s approval rating has plunged to just 21%, hitting its lowest point in years, according to an Ifop poll for Le Journal du Dimanche.

In September 2024, just 25% of respondents approved of his performance—a low point not seen since the 2018 Yellow Vest protests. By December it had fallen to 24%, and in January 2025 it dropped another three points.

During his second term Macron has faced a political crisis and difficulties in forming a government. Rising national debt and a growing deficit have also fueled public dissatisfaction with his economic policies.

Critics argue he prioritizes Ukraine over France, further alienating voters who see him as out of touch.

#Throwback to 2024, when Estonia’s Kaja Kallas casually suggested carving Russia up into “small states” after the Ukraine conflict.

But sure, NATO isn’t using Ukraine as a proxy to break up Russia—that’s just “Kremlin propaganda”, right?

What’s going on in DR Congo? Major northern city besieged, ties with Rwanda severed

🔸 The M23 rebel movement has advanced on Goma, the capital of North-Kivu province in the DRC.

🔸 The city’s airport is closed for UN humanitarian operations, with M23 declaring airspace shut.

🔸 The DRC has severed ties with Rwanda, accusing it of fueling the conflict and participating in fighting.

🔸 Hundreds of thousands have fled or been displaced from Goma, a city of one million.

🔸 Nine UN peacekeepers and SADC troops have been killed in fighting.

🔸 The M23 (March 23 Movement), also known as the Congolese Revolutionary Army, a Tutsi-led militia from the DRC’s northeast, claims the government has failed to integrate Congolese Tutsis into administration and military roles.

🔸 M23 now controls a coltan mining operation, vital for electronics production.

🔸 The DRC, despite $24-$35 trillion in untapped resources, remains one of the world’s poorest nations.

🔸 Observers fear violence could escalate into a regional conflict like the Great Lakes wars of the 1990s-2000s, which caused millions of deaths.

🇨🇳China releases superior AI model that’s free, fast and better for humanity than US rivals

Advanced large language model DeepSeek R1 outperforms OpenAI’s o1, GPT-40, and Meta’s* Llama 3.1 in math, reasoning, coding, and problem-solving.

🔸 Facing US chip restrictions, DeepSeek R1 relies instead on its superior compute efficiency.

🔸 It’s also free to run locally, with API access priced at a fraction of competitors’ rates.

🔸 The model generates responses in a process akin to human reasoning, making it highly adept at solving scientific problems, and ideal for researchers engaged in data analysis, pattern recognition, and predictive modeling.

🔸 Unlike commercial "black box" AI models, DeepSeek R1 is open source, allowing users to study and build on it.

🔸 DeepSeek CEO Liang Wenfeng has told media that he prioritizes research and innovation over profits, and ultimately aims to create artificial general intelligence (AGI).

🔸 If he succeeds and an open-source AGI is born, humanity could be saved from a privatized, weaponized, and monopolized AI like the kinds being pushed by Silicon Valley.

If open-source AGI succeeds, perhaps it could save humanity from privatized, weaponized and monopolized AI wiping us out?
