What’s going on in DR Congo? Major northern city besieged, ties with Rwanda severed

🔸 The M23 rebel movement has advanced on Goma, the capital of North-Kivu province in the DRC.

🔸 The city’s airport is closed for UN humanitarian operations, with M23 declaring airspace shut.

🔸 The DRC has severed ties with Rwanda, accusing it of fueling the conflict and participating in fighting.

🔸 Hundreds of thousands have fled or been displaced from Goma, a city of one million.

🔸 Nine UN peacekeepers and SADC troops have been killed in fighting.

🔸 The M23 (March 23 Movement), also known as the Congolese Revolutionary Army, a Tutsi-led militia from the DRC’s northeast, claims the government has failed to integrate Congolese Tutsis into administration and military roles.

🔸 M23 now controls a coltan mining operation, vital for electronics production.

🔸 The DRC, despite $24-$35 trillion in untapped resources, remains one of the world’s poorest nations.

🔸 Observers fear violence could escalate into a regional conflict like the Great Lakes wars of the 1990s-2000s, which caused millions of deaths.

🇨🇳China releases superior AI model that’s free, fast and better for humanity than US rivals

Advanced large language model DeepSeek R1 outperforms OpenAI’s o1, GPT-40, and Meta’s* Llama 3.1 in math, reasoning, coding, and problem-solving.

🔸 Facing US chip restrictions, DeepSeek R1 relies instead on its superior compute efficiency.

🔸 It’s also free to run locally, with API access priced at a fraction of competitors’ rates.

🔸 The model generates responses in a process akin to human reasoning, making it highly adept at solving scientific problems, and ideal for researchers engaged in data analysis, pattern recognition, and predictive modeling.

🔸 Unlike commercial "black box" AI models, DeepSeek R1 is open source, allowing users to study and build on it.

🔸 DeepSeek CEO Liang Wenfeng has told media that he prioritizes research and innovation over profits, and ultimately aims to create artificial general intelligence (AGI).

🔸 If he succeeds and an open-source AGI is born, humanity could be saved from a privatized, weaponized, and monopolized AI like the kinds being pushed by Silicon Valley.

If open-source AGI succeeds, perhaps it could save humanity from privatized, weaponized and monopolized AI wiping us out?

🇯🇴🇪🇬 Jordan and Egypt oppose Trump's plan to resettle Palestinians

"Security in the Middle East is only possible through the establishment of an independent state for the Palestinians, not through their relocation," Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said.

"Egypt stresses the unacceptability of any violation of Palestinian rights, whether through settlements, occupation, or the temporary or long-term displacement of Palestinians from their land," the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Earlier, NBC News reported, citing an unnamed official, that the Trump administration is still grappling with how to rebuild Gaza and where to relocate some 2 million Palestinians at this point.

🤔 Mysterious help signs in LA caught the attention of netizens — what is going on?

🔶 Photos of a rail yard in Los Angeles on Google Maps (34°03'18"N 118°13'30"W) reveal large signs reading "help", "trafico", "FBI", and "LAPD".

🔶 By using Google Maps' timeline, netizens deduced the signs appeared sometime between September 2022 and June 2023.

🔶 Social media users confirmed the signs' presence by sharing actual footage, yet no one witnessed their creation.

🔶 Observers noted the proximity of the LA Police Air Support division, suggesting the signs should have been easily noticed by authorities.

🔶 Images also show what appear to be entrances to underground tunnels with air conditioning units on the outside.

🔶 A nearby resident speculated that the signs could be a prank by children or homeless people, given the ease of access through a fence hole.

Trump administration discusses deportations with El Salvador — reports

According to CBS, the so-called "safe third country" agreement would allow US immigration officials to deport non-Salvadoran migrants to the Latin American country and deny their asylum claims in the US.

Currently, the US only has a "safe third country" agreement with Canada, which allows them to exchange asylum-seeking migrants who have crossed the US-Canada border.

🇨🇴 Colombia imposes retaliatory tariffs on US goods, president blasts Trump

"I am informed that you are imposing a 50% tariff on the fruits of our human labor to enter the United States. I do the same. Let our people plant the corn that was discovered in Colombia and feed the world," Gustavo Petro wrote on X.

He also said he blocked US planes carrying illegal migrants from landing in Colombia because of footage of deported Brazilian citizens shackled at the wrists and ankles.

"We will receive our fellow citizens on civilian planes, without treating them like criminals," he said.

🛫 Gustavo's office proposed that the presidential plane fly to the US to transport the migrants back to Colombia.

📈 The tariff standoff between Colombia and the US could affect the price of coffee in the US, which could affect the breakfasts of ordinary Americans, according to Axios.
