Here’s why the DC helicopter-plane midair collision is a ‘PUZZLE’
It is hard to fathom how the January 29 deadly air collision above Washington DC could have happened since the pilots of the Black Hawk helicopter should have seen the incoming aircraft, aviation industry specialist Capt. Desmond Ross tells Sputnik.
▪️With all the air traffic to and from Washington’s three airports, one does not simply “fly around there at low altitude without keeping a very, very sharp lookout through the canopy.”
▪️While the helicopter crew could have been “focused on instruments only and not really looking out of the aircraft,” such conduct would have been “improper.”
▪️The fact that the air traffic controllers apparently were aware of the collision risk and tried warning the helicopter, but got no response from it, is “confusing as well.”

The $10M Black Hawk is hailed by the West as one of the world’s most reliable helicopters — yet it has quite a history of deadly crashes. Let’s take a look.
🔻2024: an Israeli Defense Forces Black Hawk crashed during a medical evacuation mission in Gaza, killing two soldiers. Pilot error is blamed for the accident.
🔻2023: a Black Hawk helicopter from the Tennessee National Guard crashed in Alabama due to weather conditions and lost radio contact. Two pilots died.
🔻2015: a Black Hawk crashed during a training mission in dense fog near Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, killing all 11 service members on board.
🔻2006: Australian Black Hawk A25-221 crashed into the sea near Fiji on November 29 while attempting to land on HMAS Kanimbla, due to pilot error. Two crew members died.
🔻1996: Army helicopters collided during exercise at Ft. Campbell on June 18. The main rotor blades of the two UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters hit each other, leaving six people killed.
🔻1994: two US Army UH-60s were destroyed by friendly fire from the USAF’s F-15 fighter jets over northern Iraq. 26 people died.
