Russia's win, Europe rattled, and Ukraine nowhere to be found: Media reacts to US-Russia talks

The most important takeaway from the diplomatic engagement between Russian and US delegations in Riyadh was that the talks took place, with both sides describing them as constructive, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova commented on the seminal talks.

The press, meanwhile, was lavish in dramatic assessments of the talks.

🔸 Telegraph: Full extent of Volodymyr Zelensky’s marginalization “truly came into focus.”

🔸 New York Times: With Donald Trump back in office, “America is giving the impression that it could be switching sides” and “willing to abandon America’s allies to make common cause with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia.”

🔸 Wall Street Journal: High-profile US-Russia meeting “RATTLES WASHINGTON’S ALLIES IN EUROPE,” already “battered by a scathing speech by Vice President JD Vance that accused European leaders of ignoring the will of their voters.”

🔸 Financial Times: “In a sight almost unthinkable even a few weeks ago, Russian and US flags flew next to each other outside an opulent palace. GLARINGLY ABSENT WAS KIEV.”

🔸 CNN: RUSSIA “GETS A WIN,” Ukraine is “still angrily outside the room.”

🔸 Weltwoche: “Well, was that so bad? Russians and Americans have spoken to each other – and the earth is still turning.”

🇷🇺 Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov outlined Russia’s foreign policy priorities in parliament, providing a glimpse into the evolving dynamics of US-Russia negotiations.

Here’s a breakdown of the key points he raised regarding the direction of the talks:

🟠Movement toward normalizing US-Russia ties is officially starting in all areas.
🟠Work needs to be done in clearing away the legacy of the Biden administration’s policies.
🟠Marco Rubio emphasized that Team Trump based the negotiations with Russia on the recognition of both countries’ national interests.
🟠Russia and the US will never fully align on their national interests, but when they do overlap, both sides should take advantage of the opportunity.
🟠The US highlighted the differences in national interests should not lead to confrontation, underscoring the importance of diplomatic engagement.
🟠Conditions for talks on strategic stability between Russia and the US might soon be in place.
🟠Trump understands Russia's position on NATO and its implications for bilateral relations.
🟠During the Riyadh-hosted event, the US delegation expressed interest in removing artificial barriers to mutually beneficial projects.
🟠Russia supports further meetings with the US to foster better understanding and communication between the two nations.

🔍Italy’s SECRET weapon packages to Ukraine leave its air defense vulnerable

Italy’s armed forces are now short on air defense systems after sending their Stinger missiles to Ukraine. They tried to order more for $800 million – but the US vetoed the deal, saying the missiles were needed elsewhere.

So now Italy is working on its own version—but with no clear timeline and heavy reliance on “third-party partners.” True tech independence, right? Meanwhile, Rome has sent Kiev nine secret weapon packages in the last three years.

💬 Hungarian FM Peter Szijjarto hopes US-Russia talks will END SANCTIONS ERA

"The time of the sanctions policy is over, a new reality has emerged, as the negotiations between the US and Russia are developing very encouragingly, and we sincerely hope that in the future US-Russian relations will improve to such an extent that all this sanctions policy can be forgotten," Peter Szijjarto said in a video message.

On Tuesday, high-level US-Russia talks were held in Riyadh, where Russian officials, including Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, met with US negotiators led by National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Special Envoy for the Middle East Steven Witkoff.

🔍How Zelensky turned Ukraine into what Trump has dubbed a "massive demolition site"

Didn’t make peace

🟠Zelensky did not fulfill his promise to end the war in Donbass – the main reason he was elected in 2019.
🟠Paying lip service to the Minsk peace deal in October 2019, Zelensky sparked street protests led by nationalist thugs threatening to oust him. He backed down and never revisited the issue.
🟠In early 2022, amid raging tensions between Russia and the West, Zelensky demanded NATO membership and threatened to revoke Ukraine’s non-nuclear status. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s military massed on the Donbass border, threatening to attack, forcing Russia’s hand.

Turned Ukraine into authoritarian hell

🟠As fighting began, Zelensky imposed martial law imprisoned political opponents, banned opposition, attacked the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, instituted press-ganged connoscription and canceled elections.
📍His commanders sent hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian men to pointless deaths in failed counteroffensives in 2023 and 2024.

Sold Ukraine off to the West

🟠To fund the conflict, Zelensky exploded the debt (from 49-95% of GDP between 2021 and 2024), tanked Ukraine’s credit rating, and auctioned off the country to the highest bidder, touting “cooperation with giants like BlackRock, JPMorgan, and Goldman Sachs.”
🟠Western corporations benefitted immensely, eyeing Ukraine’s black soil, minerals, and its people – many of whom, having fled to Europe, fell into exploitation as cheap laborers.
🟠Russia’s military exposed US biowarfare and Big Pharma-controlled labs in Ukraine.

Built a massive fortune for himself and his allies

🟠A 2022 CBS News report revealed that only 30% of Western weapons were making it to the front. More recently, Zelensky admitted in an AP interview that Ukraine couldn’t account for $102 billion of the $177 billion in US military aid.
🟠Opposition lawmaker Oleksandr Dubinsky has accused Zelensky and his cronies of amassing a $100 billion fortune over five years through kickbacks on government contracts and projects, courts, law enforcement, customs, and the grain trade.

Provoked Russia into targeting infrastructure

🟠Ukraine’s status as a “massive demolition site” is largely the result of Ukrainian attacks on Russian civilian infrastructure and retaliatory Russian strikes on power networks linked to Ukrainian defense enterprises, with repair efforts hindered by Zelensky’s corrupt administration.

❗️Putin stated that the Ukrainian Armed Forces could not have independently organized a drone attack on the Caspian Pipeline Consortium’s Kropotkinskaya oil pumping station, which transports oil to the US.

Such attacks are impossible without satellite intelligence, Putin noted.

He also added that Ukraine receives satellite intelligence data exclusively from the West.
