‘Ceasefire alone is not a solution’ for Ukraine crisis - Russian Deputy FM

Moscow will engage diplomatically to demonstrate that the Ukrainian crisis can only be resolved within the framework proposed by President Vladimir Putin, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said in an interview with Sputnik.

Here are takeaways of his statements:

💬Ukraine crisis resolution framework suggested by President Putin is a gesture of goodwill, Russia is willing to negotiate on a balance of interests’ basis.

💬A ceasefire without long-term settlement of the Ukrainian crisis will lead to a swift resumption of a conflict with even more severe consequences for Russia-US relations. Russia does not desire such an outcome, a ceasefire alone is not a solution.

💬Currently, Russia maintains two parallel tracks of talks with the US, which are politically intertwined: the Ukrainian crisis and bilateral relations.

💬Dialogue on strategic stability and arms control is possible provided Russia observes tangible improvements in US policy.

💬Russia would welcome if president Trump revises the previous administration's decision to station American short and medium-range missiles in Germany, as it would be beneficial to European security.

UK and France have a mask for every occasion — Russian FM spokeswoman

During a session at the UN General Assembly, the US proposed a resolution for the peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian crisis without Russophobic elements. EU countries "marred the text with their amendments" before adopting it. However, they accepted the same resolution without their amendments in the UN Security Council, Maria Zakharova informed.

“Considering the brief three-minute walk between the General Assembly and Security Council chambers, did their perspectives on the global crisis shift in that short span, or do they simply wear different masks for different occasions?” she questioned.

Merz pushes for Germany’s $210 bln defense boost amid looming parliamentary block

Promises by Christian Democratic Union leader Friedrich Merz to increase investments in the German military to counter Russia have been hampered by fringe parties securing a blocking minority in the next parliament, Bloomberg reports.

The mainstream parties have less than two-thirds of the seats, which means that they don’t have enough votes to ease the constitutional limits on government borrowing, according to the news agency.

The developments come amid the rest of the EU’s desperate efforts to respond to US President Donald Trump’s drive to quickly resolve the Ukraine conflict.

'US sides with Russia and China' — How Western media reacted to adoption of UN resolution on Ukraine

Western outlets are seemingly shocked by the stance of the United States in the UN resolution since the document abstained from blaming Russia for the conflict.

🔹The Wall Street Journal is surprised that the United States “sided with Russia and China to win the United Nations Security Council’s backing.”

🔹The New York Times stresses that Washington and the EU “split sharply” while admitting that UNSC resolutions “are considered legally binding”, which gives “added weight” to Trump’s diplomatic stance.

🔹The Financial Times frets about a “blow to western unity” brought about by the resolution.
