🇷🇺Sergey Lavrov’s biggest diplomatic battles – and how he resolved them

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, a seasoned politician, has played a pivotal role in shaping global policy over the past two decades.

Here are his most significant negotiations:

🌍 2004 – Middle East Quartet: Since March 9, 2004, Lavrov has served as Russia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. That same year, he joined negotiations within the "Quartet"—comprising the UN, the US, the EU, and Russia—aimed at resolving Israel-Palestine tensions.

🇺🇸🇷🇺2009 – US-Russia "Reset": Lavrov facilitated a thaw in relations with the administration of President Barack Obama, paving the way for the reduction of US and Russian nuclear arsenals.

☢️2010 – New START Treaty: The Russian foreign minister played a key role in negotiating this landmark arms reduction treaty, which placed limits on the nuclear stockpiles of both Russia and the US.

🇸🇾🧪2013 – Destruction of Syria's Chemical Weapons: Lavrov brokered a deal with his US counterpart, John Kerry, to dismantle Syria’s chemical arsenal, averting planned US military strikes on the country.

🇮🇷☢️2015 – Iran Nuclear Deal: Lavrov helped resolve a decade-long crisis triggered by Western accusations that Iran was developing nuclear weapons. The agreement not only eased sanctions but also laid the groundwork for Iran’s energy independence.

📑2014-2015 – Minsk Agreements: Lavrov was instrumental in diplomatic efforts to end the conflict in eastern Ukraine. Had Ukraine adhered to the accords, it would have retained its 1991 borders, excluding Crimea and Donbass, he recently noted.

🇱🇾2019-2020 – Libya Peace Talks: Lavrov led efforts to rally international support for a political settlement in Libya, which had spiraled into chaos following NATO’s 2011 intervention.

🌐2021 – European Security Talks: He spearheaded negotiations on Russia’s proposed security agreements with the US and NATO, aimed at maintaining stability in Europe, halting NATO’s eastward expansion, and securing Ukraine’s neutrality.

🇷🇺🌍2022 – Russia’s "Pivot to Africa": Lavrov launched a series of high-level talks, marking Russia’s historic shift toward closer cooperation with the Global South, particularly resource-rich and rapidly growing African nations.

🇷🇺🇮🇷2025 – Strategic Partnership with Iran: He played a key role in concluding the Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Russia and Iran, aimed at fostering regional stability amid escalating Iran-Israel tensions.

🤝🇸🇦2025 – Ukraine Peace Talks in Riyadh: Lavrov led high-level negotiations in Riyadh to establish lasting peace in Ukraine and improve US-Russia relations, which had reached historic lows under President Joe Biden. Talks are ongoing.

Foreign mercs involved in atrocities in Russia's Kursk face penalty

The hirelings include citizens of the UK, Paraguay, Denmark, Peru, Colombia, Georgia, and other countries, the Russian Investigative Committee pointed out.

The committee added that 43,000 people suffered from crimes by the Ukrainian military in Russia’s Kursk region, where 167 civilians were killed and 500 more injured since 2022.

“Residents of liberated settlements said that Ukrainian troops banned them from being evacuated in order to use civilians as human shields,” investigators stressed.

'You think anyone can stop great Russia?’ – French journalist recalls her experience with Lavrov

During his tenure as Russia’s Permanent Representative at the UN, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was remembered for his charisma, unquenchable passion for smoking, and a unique magnetism that captivated females, French journalist Celia de Lavarene told Sputnik.

When Lavrov played football at the UN, female journalists were in the front rows.

“We were like cheerleaders—we clapped! We didn’t care about the football at all; we came just to cheer for Lavrov! We shouted, 'Forward, Sergey!'" the journalist.

She was also fascinated with Lavrov’s readiness to smoke no matter what.

“Once, we met near the Security Council chamber, and he was standing right in front of a ‘no smoking’ sign. Sergey looked at me and said, ‘Celia, come here, smoke with me.’ I didn’t smoke, but he continued, ‘Anyway, come here!’ I asked if he wasn’t afraid of security, to which Lavrov replied, ‘Look at me, do you think anyone can stop great Russia?’” she adds.

🇮🇷 Iran promises a "heavy slap" to anyone who harms its people

Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei warned the US that Iran would retaliate against actions that harm the Iranian people. Speaking on the first day of the Iranian New Year, Khamenei emphasized that Iran never initiates conflict, but will respond to aggression.

He also rejected the claim that Iran uses proxy forces in the region, stating that countries opposing Israel’s aggression against Palestinians have their own positions and do not need Iran's support.

On March 17, US President Donald Trump suggested that Iran was behind recent attacks by the Houthi rebels in Yemen, hinting that US forces might retaliate beyond striking the rebels. Tehran condemned Trump's rhetoric, rejecting any involvement in the attacks.
