'I’m very happy I was able to do this'—Ovechkin on tying with Gretzky's record

"For our soldiers, for my family... I just want to say "Hi" to everyone in Russia and thank you for supporting me. We will do everything possible to break a record," the hockey player said.

Ovechkin mentioned that Wayne Gretzky wrote to him before the game, wishing to score three goals to overcome his Canadian colleague.

Earlier, the 39-year-old Capital hockey player scored his 894th goal, one goal away from surpassing Wayne Gretzky's record, unbeaten since 1994.
