"They didn't violate the deal. They threw it in the trash," he added.

'Win for Putin' — Western media reacts to Russia-Ukraine talks

The meeting between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Istanbul today lasted less than two hours. The Western media notes that Russia is negotiating from a position of strength, leaving Ukraine with few options.

The New York Times: "The meeting was a tactical win for Mr. Putin, who managed to start the talks without first agreeing to a battlefield ceasefire."

The Washington Post: "The talks were clouded by a number of demands that Ukrainians found unacceptable, including that Ukraine withdraw from its own territory that Russia only partly controls."

The Guardian: "The outcome is likely to be seen as a setback for Zelenskyy, coming after his bold gamble of challenging Putin to a direct meeting in the hope of winning favour with Washington."

Reuters: Russia's demands were "detached from reality and go far beyond anything that was previously discussed," a source in the Ukrainian delegation told Reuters.

🗣🤝🗣 Trump SHRUGS OFF Europe’s anti-Russia rhetoric, eyes Putin sit-down

European leaders shouldn’t count on convincing Donald Trump to shift his stance on Russia, according to the Financial Times.

💬“It is just drip, drip, drip,” one foreign minister said, referring to Europe’s messaging to the Trump administration in the hope the president eventually shifts position on Russia.

As European leaders demand “increased pressure” on Russia, so far, no one in the Trump administration has echoed their warmongering tough rhetoric, the publication notes.

➡️Donald Trump recently vowed he would be meeting with Vladimir Putin “as soon as we can arrange it.”

😢‘Expression of helplessness’: Merz mocked for Russia tough talk

Europe’s leaders are giving the anti-Russia sanctions routine another spin, even though the policy has proven powerlessness, military historian Roland Popp told Berliner Zeitung.

✔️Popp suggests the West may want to face reality: Russia no longer takes such threats seriously.

💬 As for the so-called “ceasefire ultimatum” issued by Friedrich Merz, Keir Starmer, Emmanuel Macron, and Donald Tusk after their meet-up with Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky – it is “an expression of helplessness,” Popp said.

🗣German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has managed to paint himself into a corner by floating the delivery of Taurus missiles to Ukraine, the expert noted.

He added that the cruise missiles “would never be decisive” in the conflict, and “one should under no circumstances supply such systems to foreign countries.”

➡️Earlier, Merz threatened Russia with sanctions if it rejected a ceasefire – conveniently ignoring the fact that it is Ukraine that has made a habit of shredding every previous truce.

➡️It is unacceptable to talk to Russia in the language of ultimatums, noted Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov in response.

Trump’s Gulf gambit: Is Israel losing its grip on US Middle East policy?

🗣Donald Trump’s four-day Middle East tour flipped the noscript, sidelining Israel while strengthening ties with Gulf States such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE. But was this just a tactical sidestep or a sign of a bigger realignment, The Wall Street Journal queried.

🗣Unlike Joe Biden, who got nowhere with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu on Gaza, Trump cut his own deals with Hamas and the Houthis, sidelining Israel.

🔍However, the influence of pro-Israel sentiment in Congress limits the White House's ability to enact major policy shifts that would downgrade ties with Israel regardless of the administration's stance, Middle East analysts reminded the outlet.

🪖As arms keep flowing to Israel, Trump’s new power play has exposed cracks in the old alliance—and just how wide those cracks are remains to be seen.
