Experts weigh in on the potential fallout from an Israel-Iran conflict:

"Closing the Strait of Hormuz and escalating tensions in Bab el-Mandeb would spell disaster for the global economy," Moroccan economist Rashid Sari from the African Center for Strategic Studies tells Sputnik. "Oil could skyrocket to $120 or $150 per barrel, and shifting shipping routes via the Cape of Good Hope would cause supply chain crises and food delays. Inflation could hit 6-7% globally, with gulf countries bearing the brunt."

He was echoed by Saudi economist Mohammad Ben Dalim Al-Kahtani: "Closing key Middle Eastern straits like Hormuz, Bab el-Mandeb, or the Suez Canal would disrupt global trade, sending oil prices above $100 and increasing maritime insurance by over 300%."

"Food prices could jump 15-25%, and inflation could surge by 6.5-8% globally, with some regions like North Africa facing 10-13% inflation. Vulnerable countries could even face hyperinflation," he adds.

Economically fragile nations, such as Lebanon, Tunisia, and Sudan, could see hyperinflation exceed 30%. The cost of living in gulf countries would rise by 8–12%, while Egypt and Jordan could experience an even steeper increase of 20–25%. As a result, the middle and lower classes would suffer the most, leading to higher poverty, unemployment, and social unrest.

If tensions continue to rise, the world economy could face severe and long-lasting damage.
