🔥 Fire forces evacuation of 600 homes in Florida Panhandle

Residents were evacuated as a wildfire destroyed two houses and damaged 12 others in an area that has spent the past three years recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Michael, officials said Saturday.

Over 200 firefighters and emergency workers from throughout the region of the Florida Panhandle worked overnight to strengthen containment lines and protect homes. As of Saturday morning, the 1,400-acre (567-hectare) Adkins Avenue Fire was 30% contained, according to the Florida Forest Service.

The agency has deployed over a dozen tractor plow units as well as multiple helicopters, officials said in a news release.

⛽️ Elon Musk, head of world’s largest electric vehicle (EV) company, says we need more oil and gas

The man whose Tesla and Tesla Solar have devoted their existence to competing with dinosaur-powered, gas-guzzling cars, oil, and coal, and which briefly reached a market cap of $1 trillion and delivered nearly 1 million EVs last year — has come out publicly in favor of increasing oil and gas production.

He’s likely referring to the world’s notable dependence on Russian fossil fuel pipelines — a dependence which hasn’t stopped many governments from sanctioning Russia for its actions in Ukraine, but has sparked fears over surging energy prices, particularly in Europe.

It’s not like oil and gas aren’t important for Musk’s plans. We reported last year on how SpaceX wanted to drill for natural gas on land near its Starship facilities in Texas. Electricity alone doesn’t get Musk’s rockets off the ground yet.

Facebook won’t let Russian advertisers create, make, or run ads ‘anywhere in the world’

Facebook is cutting off ads in Russia. It’s pausing ads that target people in the country and is no longer letting advertisers in Russia “create or run ads anywhere in the world, including within Russia,”

The moves mark a significant escalation in its actions against Moscow and could prevent misinformation tied to Russia's Ukraine military operation from appearing in Facebook ads.

Facebook's decision late Friday follows similar moves from Google, Twitter, and Snapchat, which have all paused ads in Russia.

🦠 Boston’s indoor mask mandate for businesses is lifted

A city order that required people to wear face coverings in indoor public spaces in Boston, including restaurants, shops, museums and entertainment venues, was lifted Saturday. Boston follows New York, Los Angeles and other major US cities that are relaxing pandemic restrictions as officials push for more normalcy after two challenging years of a pandemic.

The lifting of the mask mandate comes about two weeks after the city ended its proof-of-vaccination requirement for restaurants, gyms, entertainment venues and some other businesses.

Masks are still required on public transportation, in health care and communal living facilities, and in the city’s public schools. The health board has scheduled a meeting March 9 to discuss school masking policy.

🏛 Utah governor says he’ll veto transgender youth sports ban

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said that he plans to veto legislation passed Friday that would ban transgender student-athletes from competing in girls sports. Without his support, Utah is unlikely to join the 11 states, all Republican-led, that have recently enacted bans on transgender girls competing in school sports leagues that correspond with their gender identity.

In vowing to veto the bill, Cox directly addressed transgender student-athletes, who he said found themselves the subject of political debate through no fault of their own. Since 2020, 11 Republican-led states have since passed laws banning transgender girls from playing in leagues corresponding with their gender identity — Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Iowa, Mississippi, Montana, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia.

With two-thirds majorities in both chambers, lawmakers could override a governor’s veto.

🕹 Nintendo suspends digital sales in Russia

Gamers won't be able to make digital purchases from Nintendo's Russian eShop for now. The gaming giant has announced that the eShop in Russia has been temporarily placed in maintenance mode.

It's unclear if Nintendo itself cut off payments in the region on purpose, or if the company placed the eShop in maintenance mode because a third-party processor had removed ruble payments from its system.

Other gaming companies have taken steps to limit access to their products and services in Russia. Ukraine also asked Sony to ban all players in Russia from the PlayStation network, but the company has yet to respond.
