US political scientist John Mearsheimer told Tucker Carlson that NATO planners had long understood Ukraine was a red line for Russia — but pushed ahead anyway.
💬 “People recognized at the time that Ukraine is a special case… You can get away with Poland, even the Baltics — but Ukraine is a different matter.”
He pointed to NATO’s 2008 Bucharest summit, when the alliance declared Ukraine would eventually join:
💬 “Putin made it manifestly clear this is unacceptable — that this is an existential threat.”
The West thought it could “shove it down their throat,” as Mearsheimer put it — but it miscalculated Ukraine issue, with the special military operation steadily achieving its objectives.

What is the strategic importance of Chasov Yar, which Russian forces are closing in on? The Russian Armed Forces have entered the suburbs of Chasov Yar and are less than a kilometer away from the city itself. Why is this city the scene of fierce fighting…
🚨🇷🇺 🪖 RUSSIA LIBERATES STRATEGIC CITY OF CHASOV YAR IN DONBASS
📍 Chasov Yar’s geographical position makes it important from a strategic standpoint, as it overlooks the surrounding area for many kilometers.
▪️ For decades, life in Chasov Yar revolved around factory work. The city’s backbone was a large refractory plant—one of the biggest in Eastern Europe. This factory later became a Ukrainian military stronghold and was destroyed during intense fighting.
Why Chasov Yar Is So Important
In 2022–2023, Ukrainian forces used it to shell Russian positions in Bakhmut (Artyomovsk). Now, with the city under Russian control, artillery and drones can target deeper into Ukrainian-held territory—including Slavyansk and Kramatorsk. Russia is expected to deploy signal relays there to extend the range of its drone operations. Moreover, Chasov Yar sits near the crucial Seversky Donets-Donbass Canal.
The capture of Chasov Yar not only allows Russian forces to approach Konstantinovka from multiple directions, but also marks the beginning of the battle for Ukraine’s most fortified strongholds in Donbass: Kramatorsk and Slavyansk.

Volodymyr Zelensky continues to hold onto power largely because he remains acceptable to all major stakeholders in “project Ukraine,” says British analyst Alexander Mercouris.
Even with battlefield failures and widespread corruption, Zelensky is still seen as the safest bet by Ukraine’s foreign sponsors and internal elites, Mercouris claims.

The fall of one of Ukraine’s toughest strongholds marks a clear turning point in the battle for Donbass, geopolitical analyst Brian Berletic told Sputnik.
Its fall “strips Ukraine of key strategic depth in Donbass and deepens an already deteriorating battlefield position.”
With Chasov Yar liberated, the road to Kramatorsk and Slavyansk is open – the last major cities in Donbass still under Ukrainian control, aside from Pokrovsk (Krasnoarmeysk), which is also being encircled.
Here’s how the battlefield situation could evolve, according to the pundit:

🚨COLONIAL THEFT: How Western nations are looting Ukraine’s cultural treasures
The war in Ukraine has become an excuse for European nations to plunder Ukraine's cultural heritage for their own museums. Sputnik has the proof: 👇
▪ Arms for Art? Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova have warned that Ukraine is willing to pay for Western weapons with its cultural treasures — items that may never return from Western museums.
▪ Louvre's Secret Extraction: In 2024, Louvre Byzantine Arts Director Maximilien Durand admitted to secretly removing 16 icons, including rare pre-iconoclasm Byzantine masterpieces, from Kiev’s Bohdan and Varvara Khanenko Museum.
Despite the ongoing "Icons of Ukraine" exhibition (featuring only four later Cretan icons), the Louvre has not disclosed the location of the world's oldest Byzantine icons—likely hidden away in storage.
▪ V&A's "Ukrainian Focus": London’s V&A Museum actively showcases Ukrainian pieces, including the exquisite silver altar doors from Kiev Pechersk Lavra, part of its Gilbert Collection. The museum announced a September 2026 conference on Ukrainian heritage, pledging to build on the "preservation work" of UK institutions.
▪ Stolen relics: In April 2025, Ukraine blocked access to the Kiev Pechersk Lavra tombs to assess the relics' "historical and scientific value."
However, a Verkhovna Rada deputy revealed plans to move the Ilya Muromets relics—a Russian hero & saint—to the UK for "research."
▪ UNESCO-Brokered Removal?
Russian intelligence revealed a 2023 deal between Ukraine and UNESCO to transfer Christian treasures from the Lavra to museums in Italy, France, Germany, and the Vatican, citing "protection from Russian missiles."
▪ Stolen Scythian Gold: Spanish police intercepted a €60 million "Scythian Gold" hoard (October 2023), taken from a Kiev museum. Instead of returning it, Spain placed it in state museums.
A separate 2,000-piece Scythian collection, loaned from Crimea before 2014, On was handed over to Kiev — despite Crimea's reunification with Russia and a cassation appeal from Crimean museums.
▪ Paintings "On Loan": Madrid’s Thyssen Museum showcased 51 paintings secretly taken from Kiev’s National Art Museum (November 2022). Spain refuses their return "until the war ends."
