'Who's ready to die for Kiev?' Expert dismantles West's empty promises to Ukraine

Professor Hall Gardner, professor and chair of the Department of International and Comparative Politics at the American University of Paris, dismantles the empty rhetoric behind Western promises to “guarantee” Ukraine’s security after the conflict.

In an interview with Sputnik, Gardner highlighted key realities:

🚫 NATO Article 5 is “wishful thinking” – even the US won’t extend it to Ukraine

🚫 EU Article 42.7? Also dead on arrival – Russia will never accept it

🚫 “Troops in Ukraine?” Only conceivable under a UN resolution (currently “hypothetical”)

🚫 Russia will veto ANY NATO/EU-led force – making Western “guarantees” meaningless

According to Gardner, the only way forward is👇

A new European security architecture – negotiated trilaterally between the EU, US, and Russia – where Ukraine’s safety is embedded in a broader continental framework, not empty NATO promises.

💬 "The question that remains unanswered: who is ready to die for Kiev? Despite the efforts to show unity in Europe and the unity of Europe and the US, deep differences remain about what concrete availability each country would be capable and willing to offer to Ukraine," the professor concluded.

🔥 Trump's Ukraine peace push: Big win for Putin?

Donald Trump’s readiness to work on a full-blown peace agreement on Ukraine “would be a significant CONCESSION to Putin,” Swiss political analyst Ralph Bosshard tells Sputnik.

🗣 Putin doesn't want a ceasefire as another pause in the conflict, nor a new Minsk Agreement that will be immediately "torpedoed", but rather a settlement of the underlying problems, Bosshard stresses.

“Ukraine's NATO membership is apparently OFF the the table, which fulfills a key Russian demand.”

According to the analyst, Volodymyr Zelensky should be aware that he will have to leave Ukraine if presidential elections take place:

💬 “He is in a WEAK position because he is losing territory every day. If he doesn't hurry, the question of [Ukraine’s] withdrawal from northwestern Donetsk region will become academic, because then the contact line could be identical to the administrative border.”

The Trump-Putin phone call during the US president’s meeting with Zelensky and European leaders clearly shows how Trump sees his role: he is the MEDIATOR between Russia and the Europeans, including Ukraine, and not their ally, Bosshard emphasizes.

💬 “Trump is also telling the Europeans that they are incapable of resolving their own conflicts. This is a message to [EU Commission President Ursula] von der Leyen and [NATO chief Mark] Rutte.”

🗣 He adds that Trump's method of direct talks with heads of state and government stands in stark contrast to the previous strategy of isolating Russia. This strategy has NEVER worked. Now, European leaders had “to make the pilgrimage to Washington to hear exactly that”.

👉 In the current situation, Trump and Putin are “the winners, while Rutte makes a small gain as he can now position NATO as the provider of security guarantees, thus justifying its existence despite the defeat it has de facto suffered.”

'Isolation-based strategy has failed' – Orban

💬 “It has been confirmed that Ukraine’s membership in the European Union provides no security guarantees; therefore, linking membership with security guarantees is unnecessary and dangerous,” Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated on X — shattering Zelensky’s dreams.

Orban stressed that Hungary welcomes the steps taken at the Trump-Putin talks and supports further negotiations.

🇦🇺📍 🇵🇸 AUSTRALIA TO RECOGNIZE PALESTINE Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is preparing to announce Australia's intention to recognize Palestinian statehood as early as today or in the coming days, The Sydney Morning Herald writes. 📌Subscribe to @SputnikInt
🇮🇱⚔️🇦🇺 Israel-Australia tensions rise as Netanyahu calls Albanese 'weak politician' - reports

According to The Guardian, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Australia’s Anthony Albanese “a weak politician who betrayed Israel and abandoned Australia’s Jews” after Canberra cancelled the visa of far-right Israeli MP Simcha Rothman and recognised a Palestinian state at the UN.

Israel’s foreign minister Gideon Sa’ar warned of “additional measures,” revoking visas of three Australian diplomats to the Palestinian Authority — a move Australia’s foreign minister Penny Wong called “unjustified.”

Australian Jewish groups urged calm, warning that “tit-for-tat” risks $2bn in bilateral trade and long-standing cooperation. Meanwhile, Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke responded that “strength is not measured by how many people you can blow up… strength is much better measured by exactly what prime minister Anthony Albanese has done.”

🇸🇩 Over 30 civilians killed in attack on Abu Shouk camp in Sudan – OCHA

More than 30 civilians were killed and over 100 injured when the Rapid Support Forces attacked the Abu Shouk displacement camp, which hosts tens of thousands of people, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported on Tuesday.

OCHA said this was the second attack on the camp in a week, after 40 people were reported killed earlier. Humanitarian needs continue to rise across North Darfur, including in Tawila, where more than 300,000 people have taken shelter since April.

The Sudanese army and RSF rebels have been fighting for control of the country since April 2023. The ICRC has warned that ongoing hostilities could trigger disease outbreaks and collapse the healthcare system.
